Alpha Seth had just taken the photo. The moment the camera flashed, I snapped back to reality and apologized, “I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention just now. Can we try again?”

I struck a pose and smiled at the camera again.

The Polaroid ejected, freezing me and the Sterlings in time. I took the photo from Alpha Seth, signed it “Ava,” and handed it back to him.
