Sending Me Away

Pamela's POV "Get out." That was the last thing I heard before the door slammed behind me. The duffel bag they threw at me had a partially broken zipper and was barely able to contain my possessions. I circled my arms around the bag with trembling hands. Even though the chilly night air gave me goosebumps that made me shiver, Adam and Molly's laughter had left me boiling with rage. "You're pathetic.” Molly sneered, her tone piercing as they threw me out of the house I had worked so hard to build with Adam. Prior to this, I arrived home waiting for them to arrive and they didn't come home until night. I interrogated Adam severally about the arrest but he uttered no words. Molly, who was getting tired of my bickering proceeded to throw me out and Adam watched everything with crossed arms. I had nowhere to go, no plan, and no idea of what to do. I pleaded with them to stay a few days but my pleas had no effect on them. With tears in my eyes, I walked down the dark street that had only a few cars driving past me. I just left the house where I had created so many memories, it stinged so much. I was so absorbed by the pain in my thoughts that I didn't notice a speedy car driving towards me with full speed. The moment the headlights shone at me, my heart stopped. I shielded my face off the light with the bag in my hand and the car screeched to a stop. I slowly lowered the bag with eyes that sparkled with unchecked fear and a pounding heart. A tall figure plopped out of the car, approaching me with quick steps. His body stood out against the headlights. “Are you alright?" He inquired with a voice that carried a sense of urgency. I swallowed hard on the shock as I tried to respond but no words came out. "Miss? " he called out, taking a step even closer. I didn't see his face until he was directly in front of me. He had a strong jaw, piercing eyes and a worried expression that seemed strangely familiar—as if I had seen him before. "I… I'm fine," I forced out but my shivering body said otherwise. "You don't look fine,” He examined my body, his gaze moving from my scraped palms to the blood dripping from my knee cut. I looked down and became conscious of the pain I was initially oblivious to. My jeans was torn and I had several cuts on my hands and knees, I looked like a mess. Embarrassed by my appearance, I fixed my eyes on the man as if to distract his eyes from my body and it was then I realized he was the lawyer from the police station. "They're just small cuts, I'll be fine," I chuckled nervously as I stepped back to put some distance between us. With a frown, he narrowed his dark eyes, "They look serious. I'll take you somewhere safe, come with me." "I don't need your help," I shot back. He pressed his lips into a thin line with furrowed brows, "You're out here by yourself in the middle of the night. You're bleeding and trembling and somehow that's convenient? Nice." I wanted to object but I stopped myself. He wasn't mistaken. To be honest I had lost the strength to argue. "Alright, fine. I'll come with you,” I muttered and he moved aside pointing to the car. As I settled into the passenger seat, he started driving. The only sound in the dense silence was the engine's hum. I tried not to think about my problems as I gazed out the car's window that displayed city lights and dark silhouette of buildings. "Do you want to talk about what happened?" He inquired, breaking the silence in the car. "No." I hastily replied, encircling myself with my arms. After what seemed like minutes, the car pulled into a mansion that had lights everywhere. He plopped out of the car and helped me out as well. I cautiously followed him inside with my eyes darting around the compound as if I was being followed. The air was filled with a subtle cedar and spicy scent as soon as I walked in. "Sit here, I'll go get the first aid kit." He gestured to the couch by his side before disappearing into the house. I leaned back in the chair while staring at the luxurious sitting room that was coated in white paint and golden glitters. He soon returned with a small blue box. He knelt before me, opened it, and started applying antiseptics to my wounds. "Thank you,” I muttered as I winced in pain from the bandage wrap. He smiled, "Don't mention. What happened to you though?" I hesitated but he wasn't a stranger, at least not anymore so I told him everything. He gazed at me intently for a considerable amount of time as he watched me explain. "You're welcome to stay here tonight." he said softly. Surprised by the offer, I was at a loss for words. "Why are you helping me?" “You can see it as me helping you because I've been in your position before.” He grinned slightly as he finished. I smiled in response as he extended a hand towards me. He dragged me to my feet. Something odd settled over me as he walked me down the hallway to a guest room. I felt peaceful as though I was no longer completely alone. But I couldn’t shake off the feeling that I knew this man. Moreso, if I truly did, was he the right person to be with?
