Chapter seven

Waking up the next morning was a bit hard for Dean he had a sleepless night thinking about the new addition to Lambertville. His body and his mind were at war when it came to her. While his body reacted to her curves and those grey eyes that looked like they saw to the depth of his soul. The things he was imagining doing went against everything he thought was reasonable. In his mind, the rational side was reminding him of the destruction that came with city girls. It was just a normal reaction to an attractive woman he thought to himself. And she was too darn attractive for it to amount to any good. Dean thought to himself. After showering he went downstairs for breakfast, he found his parents, Joseph, Carol his sister, and aunt Stacey already eating and deep in conversation. When they spotted him their conversation stopped. He knew they had been talking about him and what happened last night. Dean knew he had kind of overreacted and he also knew he owed everyone an apology but he could not do it then. He was still a bit irritable. "Morning," he grumbled as he went to sit down. Everyone greeted back. "Morning honey how did you sleep?" his mother asked. "It was fine," he grumbled not in the mood for small talk. "Hey bro' why got your panties in a twist so early in the morning," joked Carol who was sitting opposite him next to Joseph. Carol was the baby of the family and was currently at college studying fashion. Her career choice had nothing in common with the ranching lifestyle their parents had but everyone supported her. Joseph like Dean worked around their family business. Also like Dean who had a restaurant business on the side, Joseph had a carpentry business. Most of the new furniture in their family ranch home had been made by him. "He is mad cause of our new neighbor" Joseph leaned over and answered her. "New neighbor huh? Who and where?"Carol asked. "Old man Mason's granddaughter moved in," Joseph told her. "You mean Katherine the one he talked about all the time?" she asked sounding excited at having a new neighbor who was female and close to her age. "Yes. I met her yesterday, she is very pretty and a very nice girl too," now it was Stacey chipping into the discussion. Dean scoffed," Nice girl my foot". He had chosen to be quiet and focus on his food. He was hungry since he had acted up and starved himself the night before. "What's wrong with the girl big brother Dean?" Carol asked teasingly. She knew something had happened with Dean but had not heard the full story. "She is from the city," Joseph answered for him. "Oh!" Carol said everything falling into place. She knew of her elder brother's dislike of people from the city. She did not know the full story because it had happened when she was quite young. All she knew was Dean had distrusted everyone who stayed or came from the city. Everyone except his best friends, Zachary Lockhart and Jake Stone. To her, it sounded crazy but she kept quiet about it. "But honey you can't know for sure she is like that. You do not know anything about her yet to judge," his mother cautioned. "I know two important things so far one she's a Mason and two she's from the city. Are you forgetting the other city Masons?"Dean countered. He then abruptly stood up fed up with the conversation. "Bye" Everyone stayed silent and looked at each other understanding Dean. They wished him to move on but they knew not to press him too far it would not end well. "I should heard out too," Joseph said getting up. "Thank you for breakfast Ma." He, Dean, and some of the hired help were supposed to move up the herd to the new grazing area that day. "Joey.....," Connie called out to her second-born child. "I know Ma. I will keep an eye on him and make sure he stays out of trouble," Joseph reassured his mother having seen the emotion and worry on her face. "Thank you, honey," she said giving him a small smile. Connie had faith her son would one day get over whatever heartache he still had and be the happy man he was before. Some days it was just hard to hold on to that faith when Dean would be in his grouchy mood. But she still had hope. Dean and Joseph were minding the cattle which were grazing, Dean on a black stallion called Zeus and Joseph on a chestnut one called Ares. There was a sudden disturbance and one bull bolted away speeding away from the herd towards the fence. Stirring their horses into a sprint they pursued the bull. The raging animal was almost at the fence and they were not going to catch it in time. With the speed it was going it was going to break the fence get injured if they failed to divert it. Suddenly a white horse barrelled towards the fence from the opposite farm. The rider was wearing a Stetson hat but long black hair could be seen flying behind her. The bull seeing the approaching horse it made a sudden turn from running towards the fence then slowed down to a stop. It trotted back to the others and started grazing again as if nothing had happened. The two men approached the fence to thank the rider who had stopped next to the fence waiting for them.
