THE FRACTURED LINES

Ashley’s POV The night air felt colder than it should have, but maybe that was just her. Ashley stood frozen outside the glowing restaurant window, her heart hammering so loudly she swore people passing by would hear it. William. He sat at a round table dressed in a pressed button-up shirt, his posture straight, his smile polite. And beside him was her. The girl with glossy dark hair, her laugh like a bell, her hand brushing William’s arm as though it belonged there. Ashley’s throat tightened. She had never seen William look so… grown-up. So perfectly in place in a world that seemed foreign to her. The chandelier’s glow cast soft light over him, and for the first time, she realized how far apart their worlds might actually be. What am I doing here? Her chest ached as she turned away from the glass, the image burning itself into her memory. She didn’t even notice the tear that slipped down her cheek until the night wind chilled it against her skin. She hated herself for feeling this way. She had no right. William was her best friend, the boy who had always been there—but hadn’t she been the one pulling away, trying to chase a storm like Devin instead of appreciating the calm William offered? Her thoughts spun, tangling her up in guilt. She thought of Devin—the way he had saved her in the library alley, the way his voice softened when he called her “shorty,” the rare moments of warmth he let slip. A part of her wanted to run to him, to erase what she’d just seen, but her heart felt heavier than her legs could carry. She walked home in silence, clutching her bag like a lifeline, but the image of William laughing with that girl stayed etched in her mind, haunting her all the way to bed. --- Devin’s POV Devin never cared about rumors. At least, that’s what he told himself. But when he overheard two boys near the lockers talking about William’s date last night, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth hurt. “Yeah, I saw him—fancy place downtown, with that Charlotte girl. Parents set it up, I think. Looked like a power couple.” Devin slammed his locker shut so hard they jumped and scurried away. His blood boiled—not just because William was on a date, but because he knew what it would do to Ashley. He stalked down the hall, fists stuffed in his pockets, his mind a mess. Why does it bother me this much? he thought bitterly. She’s not even mine. She was never supposed to be mine. But deep down, he knew the truth—Ashley had slipped under his skin. And that terrified him. So when Charlotte herself approached him later that day, flashing him a practiced smile, he didn’t hesitate. “Devin, right?” she said, tilting her head in a way that made her earrings catch the light. “I think we should talk. I heard you and William… aren’t exactly friends.” Devin raised a brow, his smirk automatic. “That obvious, huh?” Charlotte laughed softly. “Let’s just say I know what I want. And right now, you look like someone who could use… a distraction.” For a moment, Devin hesitated. He saw the way her eyes flickered—not toward him, but toward where William stood down the hall, talking to a teacher. He knew, right then, that Charlotte’s heart wasn’t his to take. But maybe that was the point. “Fine,” he said, voice steady. “Let’s give them something to talk about.” And just like that, Devin made the decision he knew would wreck Ashley. Maybe wreck himself too. But at least, if he was with Charlotte, he wouldn’t have to face the feelings clawing at his chest every time Ashley looked at him. --- William’s POV William sat at his desk, the textbooks in front of him forgotten. His head was a storm, and no matter how hard he tried to focus, Ashley’s face kept appearing—her wide eyes, her hurt smile when he’d called her just a friend. The dinner with Charlotte had been… fine. She was kind, intelligent, charming. Any guy would’ve been lucky to have her. His parents certainly thought so—they’d been thrilled when he agreed to see her again. But every time Charlotte spoke, every time she laughed, his heart ached. Because she wasn’t Ashley. And now, to make matters worse, Devin had stepped into the picture again. William had noticed the whispers in the hallway—Devin and Charlotte. It was like some cruel joke, twisting his insides until he couldn’t breathe. He hated Devin for it. Hated how easily he seemed to take up space in Ashley’s life, hated how Ashley’s eyes seemed to follow him even when she pretended not to. But more than that, William hated himself. For being too cowardly to tell Ashley the truth. For hiding behind the role of “best friend” while someone else stole the pieces of her heart. When he closed his eyes that night, he saw her again—standing by his side as kids, hand in hand under the stars. And he wondered if he had already lost her for good. --- Charlotte’s POV Charlotte wasn’t stupid. She knew exactly where William’s heart lay. She had seen the way his gaze drifted toward Ashley when he thought no one was looking, the way his smile faltered whenever her name came up. It stung, of course it did. But Charlotte was used to getting what she wanted, and she wanted William. Still, she wasn’t blind to opportunity. If Devin wanted to “date” her, she’d play along. It kept her close to William, after all. And maybe—just maybe—it would make William realize what he was missing. Late one night, Charlotte sat at her vanity, brushing her hair as her mother entered the room. “Darling, are you sure about this transfer? It’s a big change.” Charlotte smiled at her reflection. “Yes, Mom. If I’m going to build a future with William, I need to be where he is. Besides, that school could use someone like me.” Her mother chuckled, ruffling her hair fondly. “You’ve always been so determined.” Charlotte’s smile widened, but her eyes gleamed with something sharper. She wasn’t just determined. She was ready to fight. --- Ashley’s POV The next morning, Ashley walked into school with her head down, trying to block out the whispers. But the words still reached her. “Did you hear? Devin and Charlotte are dating now.” “Guess Ashley wasn’t enough.” “Poor thing—first William, now Devin? Brutal.” Her stomach dropped, and the hallway seemed to spin. She forced herself to keep walking, her nails digging crescents into her palms. She wanted to confront Devin, to demand the truth—but when she saw him leaning casually against the lockers with Charlotte at his side, her heart broke all over again. Devin’s arm was slung lazily around Charlotte’s shoulders, his smirk in place, though his eyes flickered for just a second when they met Ashley’s. Ashley turned away before he could see the tears welling in her eyes. By lunch, the whispers had spread like wildfire. She barely touched her food, Lia’s concerned gaze heavy on her. William sat across the table, his jaw tight, eyes dark, but he said nothing. It felt like the world was closing in on her. And then, just when she thought it couldn’t get worse, the principal’s voice echoed over the intercom. “Students, please welcome our newest transfer, Charlotte Monroe, to our school. We’re sure she’ll be a wonderful addition to our community.” Ashley’s fork clattered to the tray as her head snapped up. And sure enough, walking through the cafeteria doors with a confident smile and all eyes on her—was Charlotte. Right beside Devin.
