The Man Nobody Knew

781 Words
The change was small. So small that most people would have missed it. But Clara Evans noticed. Anthony Kingsley was still Anthony Kingsley. He was still the powerful CEO who could silence a room with a single glance. He was still serious, distant, and difficult to approach. But something had changed. He no longer treated her like someone invisible. He noticed her. And that alone was something Clara never expected. For the past few days, their relationship had settled into a strange rhythm. They were not friends. Not exactly. He was still her employer. She was still his maid. There was still a line between them. But somehow, that line didn't feel as cold as before. That morning, Clara was preparing Anthony's coffee when she noticed him standing near the dining table, reading a document. Usually, he would leave immediately after breakfast. But today, he seemed distracted. "Your coffee, Mr. Kingsley." Anthony looked up. "Thank you." Clara paused. A simple thank you. Another small change. She placed the cup down and stepped back. "Is there anything else you need?" Anthony looked at her for a moment. "No." Then, after a brief silence, he added, "Did you sleep well?" Clara looked surprised. "Yes." "Are you sure?" She smiled slightly. "You really like asking that question lately." Anthony frowned. "Because you keep avoiding the truth." Clara didn't know how to respond. Anthony Kingsley was paying attention to her. That was something she was still trying to understand. "I'm fine," she said softly. His expression changed slightly. There it was again. That answer. But this time, he didn't argue. Instead, he simply said, "Good." Later that morning, Clara was helping Mrs. Brooks organize supplies when Lily walked into the room. She immediately noticed something. "Something is different." Clara looked up. "What?" Lily smiled. "Mr. Kingsley." Clara quickly looked away. "What about him?" "He talks to you now." "He talks because I work here." Lily laughed. "No. Before, he talked only when necessary." Clara became quiet. Because she knew Lily was right. "Maybe he's just getting used to me." "Maybe." Lily smiled. "Or maybe you're the first person who doesn't treat him like a billionaire." Clara looked thoughtful. She had never seen Anthony the way everyone else did. To others, he was Anthony Kingsley. The famous CEO. The man with unlimited power and wealth. But to her... He was someone who looked lonely when nobody was watching. Someone who carried pain behind his silence. That afternoon, Anthony arrived home earlier than expected. Clara was surprised to see him. "Mr. Kingsley, you're back." "Yes." "You don't usually return this early." Anthony removed his coat. "The meeting ended sooner." Clara nodded. She was about to leave when he stopped her. "Clara." She turned around. "Yes?" Anthony hesitated. It was unusual. He was a man who always knew what to say. A man who never showed uncertainty. But now... He seemed unsure. "When you were younger, did you always take care of your family?" The question caught her off guard. Why was he asking? But she answered honestly. "Yes." "Why?" Clara smiled faintly. "Because someone had to." Anthony looked at her. "You never thought about yourself?" She became quiet. Of course she had. There were times she wanted to be selfish. Times she wanted someone else to take care of her. But life didn't always allow that. "I think everyone has responsibilities." Anthony didn't reply. Because her answer reminded him of himself. He had spent years carrying responsibilities too. Protecting his company. Protecting his family name. Carrying expectations nobody else understood. Maybe that was why he understood her. That evening, Anthony was working in his office when he heard a knock. "Come in." Clara entered. "I brought you some tea." He looked at the cup. "You don't have to keep doing that." "I know." "Then why do you?" Clara smiled. "Because I want to." Anthony became silent. Because that answer was unfamiliar. People usually did things for him because they wanted something in return. Money. Power. Connections. But Clara? She simply wanted to be kind. And he didn't know how to handle that. "Thank you." The words came out quietly. Clara looked surprised. Then she smiled. "You're welcome, Mr. Kingsley." After she left, Anthony stared at the door. For years, he believed kindness always came with a price. But Clara Evans was slowly proving him wrong. And that was dangerous. Because the more he noticed her... The harder it became to pretend she was just another employee. She was becoming someone important. Someone he wanted around. Someone he was beginning to fear losing. And Anthony Kingsley had never been afraid of anything. Until now. End of Episode 11
