The Woman He Couldn't Ignore

785 Words
Anthony Kingsley was used to silence. Silence in his office. Silence during business meetings. Silence in his home. It was comfortable. Predictable. Safe. But recently... His villa no longer felt the same. Not because anything had changed. But because someone had. Clara Evans. A week had passed since Clara started working at the villa. She had settled into her responsibilities quickly. She never asked unnecessary questions. She never tried to get close to him. She never acted differently because he was a billionaire. That was what confused Anthony the most. Everyone around him wanted something. Investors wanted profit. Families wanted connections. People wanted his approval. But Clara? She simply did her job. That morning, Anthony walked into the dining room expecting his usual breakfast. Instead, he found Clara replacing a vase of flowers on the table. He stopped. "You changed the flowers." Clara turned around. "Good morning, Mr. Kingsley." "Good morning." It was a simple greeting. But Clara noticed something unusual. He actually said it back. "I changed them because the old ones were already wilting." Anthony looked at the flowers. "They were fine." Clara tilted her head slightly. "They were dying." A small silence followed. Anthony looked at her. Most people would have immediately agreed with him. Not Clara. She wasn't arguing. She was simply stating her opinion. "I'll replace them again if you prefer." Anthony looked away. "No." Clara waited. "They're fine." She smiled slightly. "Alright." Anthony sat down. But for some reason, he found himself looking at the flowers longer than usual. At Kingsley Group headquarters, Anthony's assistant placed several documents on his desk. "Your schedule for today, sir." Anthony nodded. "And the charity event?" "Tomorrow evening." "I'll attend." The assistant hesitated. "Sir, several families will be present." Anthony already knew what that meant. Questions. Expectations. Marriage discussions. He disliked those conversations. "Cancel any personal introductions." "Understood." Meanwhile, back at the villa, Clara received another call from the hospital. This time, the news wasn't as positive. "The medication is helping, but your mother's condition requires additional procedures." Clara gripped the phone. "How much?" The nurse gave her the amount. Her face went pale. It was more than she expected. "I understand." After ending the call, she sat quietly. She had thought things were finally improving. But life always seemed to demand more. That evening, Clara was organizing documents in the staff room when Mrs. Brooks noticed her expression. "Something happened?" Clara quickly smiled. "No." Mrs. Brooks gave her a knowing look. "Clara." The young woman sighed. "It's my mother." "Is she worse?" "Not exactly." She looked down. "She just needs more treatment." Mrs. Brooks sat beside her. "You don't have to carry everything alone." Clara smiled sadly. "I don't have a choice." "You do." "I have my family." Mrs. Brooks understood. That was Clara's greatest strength. And her greatest weakness. She always put herself last. Later that night, Anthony returned home. As he entered, he noticed the lights in the kitchen were still on. He walked inside. Clara was sitting at the table, looking through hospital documents. She immediately stood. "Mr. Kingsley." "You should be resting." "I was just finishing something." His eyes moved toward the papers. He recognized the hospital logo. "Your mother?" Clara became quiet. "Yes." Anthony didn't ask further. He wasn't someone who involved himself in other people's problems. But then he remembered something. The way she had looked at the hospital. The way she smiled despite being exhausted. "How much do you need?" Clara looked up quickly. "I'm sorry?" "The treatment." Her expression changed. "I appreciate your concern, but I can't accept money from you." Anthony frowned slightly. "Why?" "Because this is my responsibility." "You need help." "I know." "Then why refuse it?" Clara looked at him. "Because I don't want to be hired because you feel sorry for me." The answer surprised him. She wasn't offended. She wasn't angry. She was protecting her pride. Anthony studied her carefully. "You think I pity you?" "No." "Then?" "I think you are kind enough to help someone in need." A strange feeling passed through him. She saw kindness in him. A quality most people never associated with him. "I'll think about it." Clara blinked. "Mr. Kingsley?" But Anthony had already walked away. That night, Anthony sat in his office. He looked at the financial report in front of him. Then he looked at Clara's employee file. He didn't understand her. Most people would have accepted his offer immediately. But she refused. Not because she was proud. Because she wanted to stand on her own. For the first time in years... Anthony Kingsley found someone he couldn't easily figure out. And strangely... He wanted to understand her. End of Chapter 7
