A Favor She didn't Ask For

876 Words
Clara woke up earlier than usual. She had barely slept. The hospital bill from yesterday remained on her mind, but she refused to let her worries affect her work. She had learned a long time ago that problems did not disappear just because she was tired. So she got up. She prepared breakfast. She cleaned the villa. She continued moving. Because stopping meant thinking. And thinking meant remembering how helpless she felt. When Anthony came downstairs, he immediately noticed something. Clara looked exhausted. There were faint shadows beneath her eyes. "You didn't sleep." It wasn't a question. Clara looked surprised. "Good morning, Mr. Kingsley." "That wasn't an answer." She hesitated. "I slept enough." Anthony looked at her. He knew she was lying. But instead of questioning her, he sat down. The breakfast was already prepared. "Eat." Clara blinked. "I'm sorry?" "You prepared food for everyone except yourself." She looked toward the kitchen. "I'll eat later." "No." His tone was firm. "Sit." Clara stared at him. For a moment, she forgot he was her employer. Then she remembered. "Mr. Kingsley, I still have work to do." "The work can wait ten minutes." She didn't argue. Slowly, she sat down across from him. It was the first time they had eaten at the same table. Not as employer and employee. Just two people sharing a quiet morning. Anthony picked up his coffee. "You always do this?" Clara looked confused. "Do what?" "Ignore yourself." She was silent. "I don't know what you mean." "Yes, you do." His words caught her off guard. Anthony continued. "You worry about your mother. Your brother. Your responsibilities." He looked at her. "But you never mention yourself." Clara lowered her eyes. "I'm fine." Again. That answer. Anthony was beginning to notice how often she said those words. "I'm fine." Even when she wasn't. At Kingsley Group, Anthony couldn't concentrate. The contract in front of him had been open for fifteen minutes. He hadn't read a single line. His thoughts kept returning to Clara. Her refusal to accept his help. Her tired smile. The way she cared for people without expecting anything. It annoyed him. Because he didn't understand why it mattered. "You're distracted." Anthony looked up. Ethan Cole stood by the office door with a folder in his hand. "Since when do you enter without knocking?" "Since you started ignoring your work." Anthony gave him a cold look. Ethan smiled. "There he is." "Why are you here?" "Legal documents." He placed the folder down. Then he studied Anthony. "Something happened." "No." "That means yes." Anthony ignored him. Ethan looked around. "Is it a business problem?" "No." "A family problem?" "No." Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Then it must be a person." Anthony looked at him. "Leave." Ethan laughed. "I haven't even guessed yet." "You don't need to." "Is it a woman?" Silence. That was enough of an answer. Ethan's eyes widened. "Wait." Anthony immediately interrupted. "Don't." "I never thought I'd see the day." "There is no day." Ethan smiled. "Anthony Kingsley is interested in someone." "I'm not." "Then why are you annoyed?" Anthony didn't respond. Because he didn't have an answer. That evening, Clara returned from the hospital. The news was slightly better. Her mother was stable. But the treatment was still expensive. As she walked into the villa, she noticed Mrs. Brooks waiting for her. "Clara." "Yes?" "Mr. Kingsley asked me to give you this." She handed her an envelope. Clara looked confused. "What is it?" "Open it." Inside was a document. Her eyes widened. "This..." "It is an advance payment." Clara looked up. "Mr. Kingsley?" "He increased your salary and provided an advance for your mother's treatment." Clara stared at the paper. "I didn't ask for this." "I know." "Why would he do this?" Mrs. Brooks smiled. "Perhaps because he wanted to." Clara shook her head. "I need to speak with him." Anthony was in his office when Clara knocked. "Come in." She entered carefully. "Mr. Kingsley." He looked up. "Yes?" She placed the envelope on his desk. "I can't accept this." Anthony's expression changed slightly. "You need it." "I do." "Then take it." Clara shook her head. "I appreciate what you're trying to do." "But?" "But I don't want to feel like I owe you my life." Anthony stared at her. "You think this is a debt?" "I think kindness can become a burden if you don't understand why it's being given." For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Anthony stood. "I don't help people because I expect something in return." Clara looked at him. "Then why help me?" His answer came immediately. "Because you need it." Simple. Direct. No hidden reason. Clara looked at him for a long moment. Then she slowly picked up the envelope. "Thank you." Anthony nodded. "You're welcome." She turned to leave. "Clara." She stopped. It was the first time he had called her by her name. She looked back. Anthony seemed surprised by it too. After a pause, he said: "Your mother will get better." Clara's eyes softened. "Thank you, Mr. Kingsley." After she left, Anthony remained standing. He realized something. For the first time in years... He had done something for someone without expecting anything. And somehow... That felt different. End of Chapter 8
