The Side He Never Showed

786 Words
Anthony Kingsley had always believed that control was everything. Control over his company. Control over his emotions. Control over his life. It was how he survived. The world respected powerful people, but it also searched for their weaknesses. Anthony learned that lesson early. So he built a wall. A wall that kept everyone at a distance. A wall that protected him. But lately... Someone had been standing closer than anyone else ever had. Clara Evans. And the most frustrating part was that he didn't want her to leave. The next morning, Clara noticed Anthony seemed quieter than usual. Not that he was ever talkative. But there was something different. He looked lost in thought. She placed his coffee on the table. "Your coffee, Mr. Kingsley." "Thank you." She looked at him carefully. "Did you sleep well?" Anthony looked up. The question surprised him. Most people asked him what he needed. Not how he was. "I slept." Clara smiled slightly. "That wasn't my question." For a moment, Anthony simply stared at her. She had started doing that often. Reminding him that he wasn't just a man who gave orders. He was a person. "Why do you always notice things?" Clara tilted her head. "Notice what?" "Everything." She thought about it. "Maybe because I know what it's like when nobody notices you." The answer made him quiet. Because he understood that feeling. More than he wanted to admit. Later that day, Anthony had an important meeting at Kingsley Group. Before leaving, he saw Clara carrying a heavy box of supplies. He immediately stopped. "Put that down." Clara looked confused. "It's fine." "I said put it down." She sighed and placed the box down. "I can handle it." Anthony looked at her. "I know." "Then why?" "Because you shouldn't have to." The words surprised both of them. Clara stared at him. Anthony realized what he had said and quickly looked away. "Ask one of the other staff members to help." Then he walked away. But Clara couldn't stop thinking about it. Because Anthony Kingsley had just shown concern. Not as a boss. As a person. At the office, Ethan noticed something immediately. "You've changed." Anthony didn't look away from his documents. "No, I haven't." "You helped your maid carry something." "She was carrying something heavy." "You noticed." Anthony stopped writing. Ethan smiled. "That's my point." Anthony gave him a cold look. "Do you have a reason for being here?" "Yes." "And?" "I wanted to see how long it would take before you realized you're becoming different." Anthony leaned back. "I'm not." Ethan laughed. "You keep saying that." "Because it's true." "Then why do you know when she hasn't slept?" Silence. "Why do you know when she's worried?" Silence. "Why did you remember her mother's condition?" Anthony looked away. Because he didn't have an answer. That evening, Clara was in the kitchen preparing dinner when she heard a sound from the living room. She walked in and saw Anthony standing near the window. He looked tired. Not physically. Emotionally. She had never seen him like this. "Mr. Kingsley?" He turned. "What?" "Are you okay?" The question was simple. But it affected him more than he expected. "I'm fine." Clara smiled softly. "You're using my answer now." Anthony frowned. "What?" "You always tell people you're fine when you don't want them to worry." For once, Anthony had nothing to say. Because she was right. Again. "You're very observant." Clara looked down. "I just pay attention." Anthony studied her. "Why?" She looked surprised. "Why what?" "Why do you care?" The question hung between them. Clara thought for a moment. "Because someone once cared about me when I needed it." Anthony remained silent. He didn't know what to say. Nobody had ever offered him kindness without expecting something in return. Nobody had looked at him and simply asked if he was okay. Except her. That night, Anthony sat in his office long after everyone had gone to sleep. The city lights reflected through the window. He thought about Clara. About the way she smiled. The way she spoke to him. The way she saw past everything. It was dangerous. Because Anthony Kingsley had spent years convincing himself that he didn't need anyone. But now... He found himself waiting for her footsteps. Waiting to hear her voice. Waiting for the small moments that made the villa feel less empty. And that realization made him uncomfortable. Because Clara Evans wasn't just someone working in his home anymore. She was becoming a presence he couldn't ignore. A person who had quietly entered a place in his life that nobody else had reached. And Anthony Kingsley had no idea how to stop it. End of Episode 13
