Heart Attack

2005 Words
In the early hours of the morning, Eve paced around her room, pulling on her nails with her teeth while she remained deep in thought. “I’m sure it was Noah’s doing,” she deadpanned. “Only he can get on my nerves like this. He pretended to apologize while cooking something behind my back.” Venom was evident in her voice with each word that she spat. Throughout the night, she’d been unable to sleep sleep and had tossed around till daylight. How could she sleep when her company was in danger? The day’s outing with Ella had been of great help to her. The karaoke, the rage room, and everything they did helped her get her mind off things and relieved. But that was just for a while because the moment she got out of there to her house, all her problems came rushing to her and she was unable to stop herself from thinking and worrying about it all through the night. It was way above her. “Is my life from one issue to another,” she pondered. “I haven't even finished celebrating my success in revealing Melissa’s secret and now another problem.” She was fed up with these problems and her determination to live peacefully skyrocketed. Suddenly, her phone began vibrating in her hand. Her heartbeat increased and reluctantly, she raised the phone to her face and stared at the ID. It was about time. Slowly, Eve swiped on the answer button. “Father?” From his ragged breathing, she could tell that he heard the news already. “He…hello?” “Come see me, now,” she heard his angry voice command. Good Lord, help her. “Okay.” As the line went off, she rushed off to her bathroom to have her bath and get ready for the day. Coming out of her room in a black suit trousers and white shirt, she made her way out of the house to her car. “Welcome, Miss Gray,” the servants greeted with their heads down just as she made her way into her father’s mansion. It had taken her less than twenty minutes to get to the house despite the traffic. She didn’t want to anger the man any further. “Where is my father?” “In the study room,” the head servant replied. “ He has been waiting for you for quite some time now. Please go in.” Eve nodded and made her way to the study room. She took in a deep breath before she knocked lightly on the door. “Father, it's me.” “Come in.” The door creaked open with a push from her. She stepped in and closed it behind her. “Father, how have you been?” “Sit down.” She stepped forward and did as he asked. “I…” *Bang* She jumped when he hit the table to stop her from speaking further. “I don't want to hear anything from you right now.” “Father, calm down.” “Calm down? What is this?” He pushed a newspaper to her side. She held it and read the front page. She sighed. “I don't know anything about that, Father. The investors suddenly started withdrawing. I think it's related to the news. “And you let that happen? What were you doing all these while they were withdrawing? Why weren't you alert?” She was so busy plotting how to expose Melissa to the world and bring her down that she forgot her duty as the CEO of the Gray Corporation. She was so invested in her revenge scheme that she forgot about anything else. “I…I..” “You were busy with this,” he handed her another newspaper that contained the news of her exposing Melissa to the world. “Tell me, what do you have with these people, huh? What relations do you have with them? When you canceled the deal with the Hanks some weeks back, I thought you had a reasonable reason to do so. What was it?” Eve flinched at her father’s tone. This was so unlike him. It was the first time that he was yelling at her this way. He never raised his voice at her. She clenched her fist at the thought. It was all because of Noah. He is the cause of everything going on. He did this to get back at her and she was sure about it. “Father, you're stressed. Please stop. I'll explain.” “Fine. Explain.” “About Melissa and the Hank family, I have personal problems with them and I didn't want us to do business with them because they are of no good. They will only bring trouble to the company and I didn't want that.” “You have a lot to learn, Genevieve. One thing you should know is that bringing your personal issues to business is a total ruin. It's business, you shouldn't care if you have problems with them or not.” “I know, I just….” “Enough. I'm not going to remain in that. Although you refuse to tell me some part about your past, I'm not going to ask again. You'll tell me when you're ready. The problem at hand is this,” he pointed to the first newspaper. “What kind of enemies have you made.” “Enemies? What enemies?” “You still don't get it. Only your enemy would do this. Nobody else. Your enemy would go to any length to bring you down. Think of that enemy. Who is that?” Her fist tightened knowing the enemy he was talking about. She already knew who it was and no, she wouldn’t tell. This battle? She was going to fight it. Involving her father will only stress him more. “I'll find a solution to this, Father. I'm not going to let him succeed. A week. Give me a week and I'll come back to you with success. I'll get the company back to its feet and bring back all our investors and partners.” “And how are you going to do this?” “I don't know. All I know is that I will put him to shame and that is it. I'll get going. Do you take your drugs regularly?” “Get going. You worry about me too much.” She smiled and stood up from the chair and made her way to the door but before she could open it and leave, she heard her father gasping and the chair screeched from behind. She turned immediately only to find him lowering to the floor with his hands on his chest. He was trying to take breaths. “Father?” She rushed to his side and managed to hold his head before she could fall head first on the floor. “Father, Somebody help,” she screamed The servants immediately barged into the room and rushed to their side, calling their boss several times. “Someone, call the ambulance.” With the help of the servants and guards, Mr Gray was carried outside and in less than five minutes, the ambulance arrived and they helped him into it before making their way to the hospital. “What’s wrong with my father, nurse,” Eve, who followed in the ambulance asked the nurses as they checked on him. “Heart attack. Mr Gray had a heart attack. Driver, please be fast. We have to make it to the emergency room quickly,” the nurse replied. Eve held her father’s hands and kissed them several times. It was all her fault. She thought. If this had not happened her father wouldn't be having a heart attack right now. Oh lord, help her so that nothing happens to be Father. “Father, please hang in there, please.” Finally getting to the hospital, Mr Gray was brought into the emergency room by the nurses. “You can't go in, Miss Gray. Please stay here.” “Father needs me. Please let me go in. I promise I won't disrupt your work,” she pleaded desperately. “I’m sorry, it's the rule. You can’t go in.” She slid down to the floor and buried her face in her hands as a few droplets of tears dropped from her eyes. “Genevieve.” She raised her eyes when she heard her name from a distance and saw Ella running to her. “Genevieve, what happened? How..” Before Ella could complete her question, Eve lunged at her and buried her face in her neck while crying. They were both kneeling on the floor and seeing her friend in such a state, Ella couldn't help but cry with her. They were best friends after all. She was going to be happy for her and also cry with her. It goes both ways. “It's all my fault. I shouldn't have turned enemies with him. Father had a heart attack.” “Okay, calm down, Genevieve. He’ll be alright, okay? He’ll be fine. This ain't your fault. If anyone is to be blamed for this, it should be, Noah.” “I won't be able to forgive myself if anything happens to my father.” “Nothing is going to happen. Calm down, okay.” Ella patted her hair and back in an attempt to calm her friend and boss down and it seemed to work as Eve relaxed a bit and stopped crying. Although her breath was still heavy and sad. After some minutes of sitting and waiting as the doctor attended to Mr Gray, the door of the emergency room finally pushed open and the doctor walked out. “Doctor, how is my Father? Is…Is he alright?“ She stood up immediately and asked. “Calm down.” “Why is everyone asking me to calm down? I asked a simple question. How is my Dad?” “Mr Gray is out of danger.” Eve relaxed as she heard that coming from the doctor. She thanked the Almighty. “Thank goodness.” “He's out of danger but we have to examine him for a few days before we can be one hundred percent sure about this. He'll be here for a while. By the way, I can't find the drugs I prescribed in his system. A different drug is being given to him.” “What?” “You have to be more careful. That is all I have to say. He's still unconscious but you can go see him,” the doctor concluded and walked away. Eve watched as her father was transferred from the emergency room to the VIP room. “You should go see him, Genevieve. What are you waiting for?” Eve turned to her friend. “I can't see him in this state. I just can't. Do me a favor, Ella.” She held her hands. “Anything.” “Help me watch over Father. I'll be back soon. I just have to go take care of something, okay?” “Where do you intend to go?” “I need to find a solution. Father is in this state because of the news. I want to put everything back in its rightful place. I can't get him worried about the company. I promise I'll be back soon and I'll put everything in its rightful place. “Be careful. Come here.” They engaged in a hug and after they broke apart, Ella handed her a car key. “You can't go without this. Take it.” “Thank you so much.” Eve turned her back and started making her way out of the hospital. Once she was finally out, she brought out her phone from her trouser pocket and dialed a number. “Hey.” “Let's meet up.” “Where?” “I'll send you the address.”
