An hour later, Eve sat on a chair in a small cafe a few blocks away from the hospital with Liam opposite her. She took a sip from the cup of coffee before her and sighed. “Thanks for coming, Liam.”
Liam raised his gaze from his phone which he’d been staring nervously at and he forced a smile. “It’s fine. I’d come running to you even if I’m in another country. By the way, I saw the news. What’s going on?”
“That was my fault. My father is disappointed now.”
“It’s not, Eve.”
“I need your help, Liam,” Eve spoke desperately. “The Gray Corporation is suddenly in danger. They keep creating bad news about us. I don't know what to do right now and father, he got into this because of the news.”
“We'll find a solution. I’m sure someone did this to set you up. I wonder who it is.”
“I know. It’s Noah Hank. I'm one hundred percent sure that he did this. Only he is obsessed with bringing me down right now.”
A deep frown settled on Liam’s forehead.
“Noah Hank?” He pondered.
If it was truly Noah who caused it, he wasn’t sure that there would be anything to do about it. From what he knew about Noah Hank, he never backed down and he had eyes everywhere in the country knowing everything that was going on. Noah Hank was one beast in business and knew it like the back of his palms. Bringing him down might be almost impossible.
“Yes, that bastard. I'm sure he's the cause of everything going on right now.”
“Why would he do that? I mean, you don't have problems with him, do you? Last time I checked, he doesn't just attack anyone without reasonable cause.”
“That's a story for another day. Please, I need your help. We have to take down the news and…. Oh Goodness. I'm confused.”
“I get it. I get it. I'll do something about it, okay?” He held her hands and caressed them in an attempt to soothe her. “I'll stop the news from w spreading further and we'll see what we can do after that, okay?”
Eve nodded.
He let go of her palm and leaned back on his chair, his eyes now scanning the cafe as if in search of something or someone.
“By the way, where is that troublemaker best friend of yours? Considering that she’s always clinging to you like gum, I wonder where she’s gone.”
She couldn’t help the laugh that broke out from her lips.
“Stop that, Liam. I left her at the hospital to look after my Father. You want me to say hi to her for you?”
Immediately, he refused. “No no no, don't please. If Ella finds out I asked of her, she'll start getting ideas in her head and well, you know how annoying she is.”
“You know you can come to the hospital if you want to see her badly. Maybe you're missing her annoying you.”
“I don't want to see her.” Afterward, his voice lowered. “It's you that I want to see badly.” He clamped his mouth shut at what he just blurted out. “I mean, I'd rather see you.”
“I get it. I wonder why you always pick a fight with her. Ella is nice, really.”
“It should be the other way around. She always picks a fight with me. Speaking about nice, she's the most annoying and mannerless woman I've met.”
“Okay okay. I don't want to hit you with this cup of coffee hearing you speak that way about my friend.”
They both laughed. Liam stared at her smile for a while before speaking. “It feels good to know that I can put a smile on your face after what happened. It's relaxing. You deserve to have a smile on your pretty face every day.”
“I see that's how you make women’s hearts flutter. I almost fell for you just now. Stop talking gibberish. Anyway, I have to leave for the hospital now. I'll see you some other time. Do text me if there is any update.”
“Sure.”
*****
“Genevieve, you’re back.” Ella greeted just as she saw her walk into the VIP hospital room that her father was in.
“Ella, is father not awake yet?”
“Not yet. You should go see the doctor. He came here searching for you.”
“Why?”
“He didn't say. You know, confidentiality issues. But he said something about the test results.”
“Oh…okay. I'll go see him immediately and come back.”
Ella nodded. She made her way out of the room to the doctor’s office. She knocked twice when she got there.
“Please come in.”
She opened the door and got in.
“Miss Gray, please have your seat.”
Sitting on the chair opposite the doctor, Eve started.
“Umm, my assistant informed me that you have something to tell me. Is there any problem? Is my father okay?”
The doctor rummaged through the files on his table and fished out one.
“For now, your father is okay but I don't think it will remain so if this continues.”
“If what continues?”
“Here.” The doctor handed her a paper which she read through. She wasn't able to understand the medical terms. They were confusing as f**k.
“I don't understand.”
“Your father is in danger.”
Eve shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “Can you be more specific? What danger? How? Didn't you just say that he is fine?”
“He's fine for now, Miss. What I'm saying is that he is in danger at home. Someone is switching his drugs.”
“What?” She gasped.
“You heard me, Miss. Someone is switching his drugs and it's causing him a lot of harm. The drugs in his system are totally different from the ones we gave him here in the hospital. From the look of things, someone is trying to put the patient in danger.”
Eve tried to process everything the doctor just said in her head and good lord, it didn’t sit well with her. Someone's trying to put her father in danger? Who could be switching the drugs, now?”
“Wh…what can we do?”
“I suggest that you look into the people giving him the drugs and make sure he takes the right drugs from now on. We would have nothing else to say if this continues. It's up to you, Miss Gray. Keep a close watch on your servants, I suggest that.”
“Thank you so much for this, doctor. I'll take care of this immediately. Please look after my Father and make sure nothing happens to him.”
She stormed out of the office in anger and took to her heels back to the room.
“What did he say?” Ella asked as she came into sight.
“Come on, we have to leave. We have something to take care of.”
“What.”
“Come on, I'll tell you on our way.”
