Melissa’s Disappointment

1210 Words
Noah’s gaze lingered on Melissa for a while before he turned and walked away without a word. She grunted in frustration. She'd expected him to reassure her as usual and promise to marry her for real and deal with Eve once and for all. Desperation washed over her as she watched him walk away and immediately, she chased after him. “Where are you going?” She yelled, her voice shaky with desperation. “I'm talking to you.” “Go attend to the guests, Melissa. I don't have anything to say to you.” “Really? That's all you can say. You know why I'm in this condition. It's all because of her.” Her voice raised, her chest heaving upward and downward in anger. She was desperate to make Noah reassure her. “She caused me pain and right now, I still feel the pain, the trauma, I can hear her voice in my head. She's going to come back at me. She's going to kill me this time.” She rushed to Noah and grabbed his hand, stopping him from walking further away. “Look at my condition, Noah. What if it were your sister in this position? What if it were your sister almost crippled.” “Isn't that why I'm marrying you?” She flinched as Noah suddenly yelled, his voice traveling throughout the entire hallway and made her tremble. “Isn't that the reason you're answering the title as my fiance now? What more do you f*****g want?” “I'm…I’m scared.” “She's not going to do anything so stop being dramatic. Let go of my hand this instant.” He pulled her hand from his before turning his back to her, ignoring the tears that ran down her cheek as he left her standing all alone in the hallway. Once he was out of sight, Melissa wiped her eyes and clenched her fist. Was it shocking that Eve suddenly became Miss Gray? Right! It was so shocking that she wanted to cry. She never imagined that Eve would become better than her. That Eve would have the upper hand in life when all she’d been previously was an unwanted wife. Now that Eve was back for her, Melissa knew that she wouldn’t having a moment of peace at night. She’d seen the determination and desperation for revenge in Eve’s eye, to make her life a living hell and goodness, she wasn’t ready for it a single bit. She needed to counter attack. Just then, the thought of her soon to be mother in law interrupted her thought. “What are you doing standing here all alone?” She let her tears out and swiveled around, limped toward her and embraced her tightly. “Mother,” she cried. The woman gasped in confusion and hugged her back, patting her hair and letting her stay in her embrace for a while. “Mother, see that? I’m going to die very soon. Genevieve is back.” She hiccuped. “She’s going…to come for me. I’m scared.” “Calm down, honey. Relax. Noah will take care of her, I’m sure of it. Nothing is going to happen.” Anger washed over her and she suddenly pulled away from the woman and shoved her lightly. “There goes my anger.” Melissa threw her hands in the air. “Nothing is going to happen? That's what you always say. Every single time you think that nothing will happen but things keep happening right in front of us.” Each syllable of hers came out cold and loud. “Do something, mother. Please do something. I’m scared.” Mrs Hank’s forehead creased with mortified lines. “That is why I’m asking that you calm down first. You have to calm down so we can think of what to do next. Besides, don’t you dare raise your voice at me next time,” she warned. “I am not your birth mother. Calm yourself down. After the party, come see me in my room. We’ll think of something there.” She passed her a scowl before heading back into the hall, Melissa again left alone in the hallway. She gripped the sides of her hair tightly and gritted her teeth, biting back her scream. She knew that if she let out the scream, she would gather unwanted attention. “f**k,” she groaned. “I can’t believe I’m in the same building as Genevieve.” With the power that she had now. She knew Eve could end both the Hank and her family’s business with a snap of her finger and she for sure shouldn’t let it happen. She needed to act fast. Meanwhile, back inside the hall, Genevieve took the last shot of drink and raised her glass to the air. “More, give me more.” “You can’t drink more of that, Genevieve. And you too Ella. You should stop,” Liam adviced. “You two are wasted.” “Leave us alone, you dickhead. Let us drink away our sorrow.” “Sorrow? Last time I checked, you were living your best life, Ella.” His brows were raised. “You don’t even know anything about me, dickhead.” “Me, dickhead?” “Yes. You don’t know?” Drunkenly, she raised her hand in the air to demonstrate what his head looked like and afterward threw her head back in laughter. “Your head is like this. Longgg and thin.” “Really?” “En.” “Then you surely don’t look at the mirror yourself.” “What? I do every morning.” “Then you must know that you have a pear head?” “What?” Ella gasped in disbelief. “Me, pearhead? You can’t think of anything else other than that?” “I just told the truth.” She breathed in and out roughly as she dipped her hand into her purse and fished out a small mirror. She angled it to her face and stared hard. “How is this pear head?” She looked upward at the man. “You just done have good eyes.” “You can keep deceiving yourself. We both know the kind of head you have.” “No, I….” Before Ella could complete her words, the sound of glass dropping on the table in a bang caused them to flinch and their heads snapped to Eve who continuously glared at them both.” “I asked for more beer and you two are busy bantering? Should I hit your flat heads with this?” “Flathead?” “Flathead?” “Shut the hell up. One more word and I'll break both your heads.” “He started it. He called me pearheaded.” “I'm done. Let's go home,” Eve said and stood up from her chair.” Liam immediately stood up with her and held her arm in support. “I'll drop you both home. No objection. None of you can drive in this state.” Together, they made their way to the exit of the hall. As they left the party, they failed to realize cold eyes staring at them, blazing in anger.
