“Wowww. Are we in the office of a king from the early 80’s?” Genevieve let out a laugh as she stepped into her father’s office. Behind her was Ella and another employee who showed them around.
Due to the sudden illness of Mr Gray, Eve had no choice but to take over the company on his behalf until he could stand on his feet again.
At the thought of the man, her heart softened. It had only been a year since they met as father and daughter but she felt like she’d known him her entire life. Like they hadn’t seperated at all.
“Right? Your father likes these historical stuff or whatever they’re called,” Ella added from behind her. “We can't blame him. Plus the interiors look somewhat good. Only if you stare at them deeper.”
“Since I’m here for the meantime, we should change a few things.” She stepped toward the portraits on the wall. “These creepy portraits makes me uncomfortable and also the curtains should be drawn at all times. Note that.”
“Yes ma'am,” the employee behind them wrote in her note, noting the words of her new boss.
“I won't be changing anything else. When Father comes back, we'll return the paintings.”
“Yes ma'am.”
She walked further into the office and her hands trailed the pieces of furniture. They looked outdated but she knew that they were expensive. It’s by their looks, one could tell.
As she slowly lowered herself to her father’s chair, she felt her heart skip a beat, pounding so loud in her chest. “Oh my God,” Eve exclaimed.
“Do you need something, ma'am?”
“N…no.”
She didn’t know how to feel about the things happening in her life. How on earth did she go from the unwanted wife a year ago who had no single penny to the daughter and heiress of a billionaire? Everything happened too suddenly. And the chair? She’d felt like she sat on riches and power itself. Perhaps it was how one feels knowing that everything, every success, every failure lays on your hand. You can either make it or break it.
Was this how it felt having so many responsibilities? Right now, her life was something different and she was going to do everything possible to make sure the things that she have now remains forever. She would make sure no one snatches the happiness from her ever.
The riches, the power, the love, the position. They’re all in her hands and she would use them to her favor.
“Ma’am, these are the list of people you have to see today.” Eve was broken away from her thoughts at the voice of the company employee before her. She dropped a file on the table and with a smile, continued. “Some of the meetings are taking place here and others at different places.”
“I have to start working today?” It was enough to make her mouth fall open.
“Yes ma'am, we can't cancel the meetings.”
“Ouchie. Haha,” Eve laughed. She actually did forget that she had to work while sitting in this chair. How she wished that she doesn't have to do anything other than to watch. It would be better that way, right?
“Pass them to Ella,” she instructed.
Ella took the files from the staff and brought them to her desk.
“Three meetings this morning and one in the evening.”
She looked at the names and times of the people that she would have to see today and she smirked. It would be so much fun.
“Hmm. Not bad. I hope that they keep to time and show up early. I'm not friends with lateness.”
“We’ll pass that message to them.”
“Great.”
“Do you need coffee, ma'am?”
“Do I need coffee? Huh, yes. Yes, I do need coffee but wait. You haven't introduced yourself to me. What's your name?”
“I'm so sorry. My bad. I'm Olivia and I used to be your father’s second secretary. I'll also be yours in the meantime. Welcome to our company once again,” Olivia introduced with her head down.
“Okay, Olivia… You can go get the coffee now.”
Olivia bowed and rushed outside the office to go do her new boss’s bidding.
“Wow. This is nice, Eve,” Ella exclaimed. “Did you see how she bowed to me also?”
“Well, you are any assistant. It's only right that she does that after all, you're her superior. But, how were you my assistant before when all I do is sit at home?”
“Umm. That's how it's supposed to be. I assisted you when you have to attend parties with your father and also assisted you when you were still recovering so yes, I'm your assistant in everything. I'm so cool.”
“Cool my butt. Why are there so many files?” Eve whined, leaning back on the chair.
“Are you whining?”
“Of course not. Just that no one warned me about this much work.”
She could already feel a headache just by staring at the files piled up on the table. Her head was spinning just by looking at them. How on earth is she going to finish these things?
Four hours later, Eve already finished two meetings and there were only one remaining till the last one which would take place in the evening.
“What kind of delay is this? I cancelled my lunch break for this meeting. I'll leave if he does not arrive in the next ten minutes,” she grumbled to Ella.
“Here, have some cold water to cool down.”
She gulped down the cold water immediately and sat straight on her chair. Ella was standing in front of her and trying to cool her down but it wasn't working. The last meeting that she has is the one that was probably going to cause her to sleep angry today but she has no choice.
In less than three minutes, the door of her office opened and Olivia walked in.
“Mr Hank is here, ma'am,” she announced.
