CHAPTER THREE

/-Kyra-/ My first instinct was to hide my face, but I realized that I had my mask on the whole time with him, so it was incredibly stupid to hide my face when he had no idea who I was. He was in his black tailored suit as usual with his perfectly styled hair. Those blue orbs swept through us as he stopped by the front desk. His poise, build and time screamed nothing short of power. I could already see the women swaying and drooling. A frown settled on my lips but I tried to keep my mind off it. "Why are they still out here?" Davies asked the blonde at the front desk. If he noticed her blush, he did not comment on it. "The hiring manager is yet to arrive, sir," she answered. "Any prior notice?" He asked. "No, sir," she responded. "Good. Prepare a nice termination letter for her," he instructed and we gasped. His gaze snapped to us and we quickly fell shut, looking away. "Send them in. I'll interview them myself," he said, and from the look on the blonde's face, I could tell we were in for an unpleasant experience. We were instructed to go to the last floor and wait in the lobby while he called us one after the other. My anxiety levels spiked as I saw the expressions of those walking out of the office. No one had a smile on. It was disappointment mixed with embarrassment. My heart raced when I was called in. This person might have been anxious because of his strict and domineering nature, but I had more things to worry about. Like the fact that I might have almost slept with him. I tried to keep my nervousness as I walked to the desk and forced my bum down on the seat. He barely spared me a glance as his focus was solely on his laptop. Which I assume was a good thing. "Your documents," he said and I handed the file to him. He took it from me and opened it to take a look at my credentials. For some reason, he looked at me suddenly and my breath hitched. I dropped my gaze immediately, making sure my trembling hands were out of his sight. "Kyra Ashwood," he called. "You either keep your eyes on me or you use the door." I gulped hard and slowly, my eyes met with his. Those blue eyes squinted at me and I held my breath, afraid he recognised me. They dropped to my neck, then back to my eyes. I needed to say something to distract him from piercing two and two together. "Did you find anything interesting?" As soon as the words left my mouth, I cursed myself for running my mouth. His lips pressed into a thin line. "Your eyes remind me of someone," his voice had a sharp edge to it. "While your CV is not that impressive, your credentials are outstanding." I rubbed my sweaty palms against my dress. "I've not had any experience and I didn't really have time to come up with an impressive lie. Besides, your company is one of the biggest and most successful in the country, so I figured nothing would really impress you unless I worked overseas, and that lie would be too much of a stretch," I said. His lips twitched. "Are you trying to use virtue to convince me to employ you?" He asked. I sucked my lips nervously, "Is it working?" "Maybe," he shut the file, "But I must warn you, I am not a very lenient man. I'm not patient either so I expect you to be prompt and very disciplined. It doesn't take much to get me irritated, and even less to get you fired." "I don't doubt that, sir. I will give you my best," I assured him. He nodded and handed back my file. "Be here by six tomorrow for your appointment letter. If you are even a minute late, you can kiss the job goodbye," he stated. "And if your receptionist is late?" I asked and his eyes narrowed at me. "I'm sorry, I just thought we should consider other possibilities." "You will be getting your letter from me. So do well to dismiss those possibilities. You may leave." I was tempted to ask why he couldn't just give me the employment letter but I realized it was a trap to make me lose the job. So I bowed and walked out of the office. I didn't realize I was holding my breath until I was outside. My chest swelled up with happiness as I walked out of the company. With a higher paycheck, there was a possibility of running my father's surgery sooner. I headed to the hospital where my father was admitted, but on inquiry, I was given shocking news. My aunt had checked him out three days ago. I didn't know what to think or how to react. How could she check him out without informing me? "I'm sorry but can you please confirm it again? His name is Joshua Ashwood. He suffers from a heart disease and..." "I know who your father is, dear. As I said earlier, his sister checked him out. According to her, she was moving him to a better hospital where he would undergo surgery," the nurse informed me. "What?!" I exclaimed. " I can't believe this! What about the debts?" "They have all been cleared so you don't have to worry about anything. You should talk to her. I thought the reason he was moved was because the money for the surgery was ready," she said. "Thank you," I said quickly and hailed a cab. My aunt paid all my father's bills. That sounded way too good to be true. Aunt Sylvia wasn't that kind, especially when her own money was involved. On getting home, I burst into the house to see my aunt with a strange man. Jana was seated beside her. "Oh, there she is!" Aunt Sylvia exclaimed with a smile on her face. I didn't have time to return her smile. "Where is my father? I dropped by the hospital today and was told you moved him," I asked. "Is that why you are creating a fuss? I just found you a suitor," she winked and my eyes drifted to the man. "He is a very rich and amiable young man. He didn't waste time in clearing your father's bills and moving him to a better hospital." I couldn't believe the woman.
