After leaving the professor's office, I pulled out my phone to check online.
Only to find that the viral post had already been taken down.
Even worse, anyone who spoke up calling Gretta a homewrecker would find their account suspended or deleted almost immediately.
I did not even need to guess. This was all Darren's doing.
When you are student body president, silencing people and erasing comments is as easy as saying a single sentence.
I closed the campus message board, opened my social media app, and searched easily for the account I knew: Gretta Chases Her Love Bravely.
I had stumbled across this account some time before.
After scrolling through just a few posts, I had no doubt. This was definitely Gretta.
Every post laid out exactly how she had been deliberately moving in on my relationship.
I never believed that the "hero rushing to save the damsel" act from the night before was just bad luck or coincidence.
And when I opened the page now, sure enough, there was a brand-new update.
The fake injury trick worked perfectly! He was so scared for me, he actually thought something terrible might happen. He carried me all the way to the hospital, running the whole time. The photographer I paid must have shared those photos by now. That will really get under that girl's skin!
The nurse hurt me a little putting the IV in. Darren got so angry on my behalf, he held me and comforted me for ages. He is perfect in every way. He just still won't break up with her. But I know for sure he wants me too.
The whole comment section was filled with people comforting her and cheering her on.
I just stood there, thinking it through clearly.
Darren stopped caring about me a long time ago. Why wouldn't he just end things himself?
Was he waiting for me to be the one to walk away?
Fine. Then I will be the one to do it.
I went back to the apartment we shared and started packing my things.
After four years living together, our spacious apartment was full of memories everywhere.
There was the big double bean bag in the living room, where we used to curl up together reading books or watching movies.
The hanging rope swing on the balcony, something Darren had built and put up for me with his own hands.
In the study, one whole wall was lined with books, half his economics textbooks, half my physics reference books.
I walked slowly through every room, feeling the sharp pain of letting go soften slowly into quiet, final acceptance.
We had once talked about getting a golden retriever puppy. But Darren had been completely against the idea.
He had pulled me close then, his voice low and serious. "I will not share you with anything or anyone in this house. Nothing... except me."
Darren could be so sweet and stubborn in his own way.
Back then, I could never say no to him.
So we never got the dog.
But looking at it now, it was probably for the best. I was leaving the country, and he would have someone new soon enough. This way, no living thing would ever have to be left behind or abandoned.
I zipped up my suitcase.
I went online and changed my profile picture to a simple landscape photo, then sent Darren a message.
Sandra: Where are you? We need to talk.
I waited half an hour. No reply.
I messaged one of his friends and got the address of a private party being held downtown.
I walked up to the door of the function room.
A waiter had just stepped out, leaving the door standing slightly ajar.
Voices drifted out clearly through the gap.
"Gretta, you dance so beautifully! You really are practically professional!"
Then Darren's voice, sounding almost gentle, but with a hint of that familiar protectiveness.
"You are still recovering. Don't push yourself too hard. Sit down and rest now."
The people around them started teasing right away.
"Ooh... someone is being protective!"
"You get to have her all to yourself whenever you want! We never get this lucky! Come on Gretta, one more! Gretta! Gretta!"
One person started it, and soon the whole room was chanting her name.
The noise rose so loud it made my ears ring.
That was when I pushed the door fully open and stepped inside.
The loud, laughing room went dead silent in a single heartbeat. Every face turned toward me, eyes wide and suddenly panicked.
Someone spoke up before they could think better of it.
"Oh... hello, Sandra..."
That was all it took.
One name, then the other, and I felt a cold wave of disgust wash right through me.
