Chapter 6 — Between the Quiet and the Storm

550 Words
“The night stretches on, and I lie wide awake.” staring at the ceiling like it might give me answers. My phone is next to me, screen dark, untouched. I can still hear her voice—low and cold, cutting through the night like it belonged there. “I told you, sunshine. Don’t follow shadows.” I swallow hard. I used to like her quiet. The way she seemed still, like calm water. But now I’m starting to wonder if that silence hides something deeper. Something sharp. Dangerous. And I can’t stop thinking about how I felt standing there—terrified… but also drawn in. I should be pulling away. So why does every part of me want to get closer? --- (Blake) I’m in the gym. Alone. The heavy bag sways from the last punch I landed a minute ago. My knuckles are taped now—clean, like none of it happened. But Zoe’s face keeps flashing in my head. Her wide eyes. That sharp inhale when she saw me. She looked at me like I wasn’t real. Like I was a stranger. Jax leans against the wall, watching me. “She saw, huh?” I keep my eyes on the floor. “I didn’t mean for her to.” “You told her not to follow shadows,” he says, casual like always. “But sunshine doesn’t listen.” I let the silence sit between us. Then I say it out loud. “She’ll pull away now.” Jax shrugs. “Or she’ll fall harder.” That’s what scares me. --- (Zoe) The afternoon feels too bright. Too normal. I’m sitting under the same tree where I saw her sketching for the first time, but I don’t feel calm. Mia watches me with narrowed eyes. “You okay?” I hesitate. “If someone you liked… wasn’t who you thought they were…” Mia tilts her head like she’s heard this a thousand times. “Isn’t that all of us?” I exhale. She’s right. But it doesn’t make it easier. And then I see her. Blake. Walking out of one of the campus buildings, dressed in black like always. Our eyes meet. I stand up. “I’ll be right back.” --- (Zoe) “Blake,” I call out, catching up to her. She stops, but doesn’t turn. Not right away. I walk closer, heart in my throat. “What happened last night…” She finally faces me, her eyes blank, unreadable. “You weren’t supposed to see that.” “I know,” I say quietly. “But I did.” There’s a pause. Her voice lowers. “That’s a part of me, Zoe. One I don’t show unless I have to. It’s not pretty.” I take a step closer. “But it’s still you.” Something shifts in her face. Barely. A flinch. Like I hit a nerve. “You should stay away,” she murmurs. “I don’t want to.” Another silence. And then—just for a split second—a tiny smile flickers on her lips. It’s gone almost as fast as it came. “I don’t know how to be soft,” she whispers. I move closer. “Then be sharp with me. Just don’t disappear.” ---
