Thunder and the other warrior messengers had been traveling for twenty-five days and were exhausted and homesick. They had only 10 more miles and could not wait to get to the cowboy village. They stopped for one last sleep and set camp for the night. Thunder told the others This is it, guys we nearly made it. We have a dangerous trip tomorrow, we have to cross the big river, so let’s get a night’s sleep, and we’ll leave early in the morning. They woke up early in the morning, and it was very cold; this was the exact weather they were hoping wouldn’t happen, but they had to complete their trip. Everybody was waiting for them; it had taken them a long time, and they had to share horses because they were dying from exhaustion. The poor horses were on their last legs and needed water and fresh food. Thunder and the other messengers got on the horses and started their trip. They traveled five miles, and the river was in sight. Thunder told them this is the most dangerous part of the trip, and when crossing the river, we have to be very fast. There are some nasty creatures in that river. The horses would not go near the water, so they had to swim across and start walking. I’ll go first, I’ll take a rope over with me. You come over one at a time, tie the rope around your waist, and I’ll make sure you don’t drift off. Thunder grabbed the rope. He was nervous about going through the river, but knew he had no choice. He took a deep breath and stepped into the river. He went under the water and popped back up he had to swim; it was too deep to walk. He got halfway across the river, and the others were watching in fear. He was nearly there, the river was flowing strongly, and it was very cold. Suddenly, he screams in pain. The others shout Are you okay He gets out on the other side of the river, and there’s a tiny fish attached to his leg. The other messengers laughs as he pulls the fish off him and throws it back in the water. Thunder tells them to pay attention and throws the rope over to them. The next one to come across, he ties the rope to himself and makes his way over. He makes it so they throw the rope again and again till they get to the last person. He gets in the water and makes his way across when, out of nowhere, a gigantic crocodile dives out of the water and chomps down on Cherokee Messenger and snaps him in half. The crocodile eats the messenger while the rest look in shock and feel helpless. They started traveling and can’t believe what happened. The crocodile was five times bigger than any crocodile they had ever seen. They had to travel on foot, as they could not get across with horse; the horse would not go near the water, they must have sensed the danger. Thunder stops and tells the others We have two miles, we have lost the homing pigeons, and I will have to go with the little parrot chief. Little Parrot Chief was Big Parrot Chief’s son. They both learned different languages. The little Parrot Chief was scared. He said I don’t want to go. I was only here to write the English message to put on the pigeons, and that’s it. Thunder said You are the only one who can speak English, and we have lost the homing pigeons. You have no choice if you dont do this, it would have been for nothing, and our two warrior messengers died for no reason. Our people will die when the underground people attack. Please, we have to risk this for our people and our future. Little Parrot Chief goes silent for a bit, he then answers and says he will do it. Thunder says Thank you, let’s do this for our people, let’s go, this is what we came for. Thunder and Little Chief parrot make their way to the cowboy town. Thunder tells the rest of the warrior messengers that we will be back in five hours. If we are not back in time, wait for two more hours, and go back to the big wolf if we don’t turn up. They tell Thunder they’re not going to leave without them, but Thunder orders them to, so they can tell Big Wolf the outcome and that Thunder and Little Parrot Chief didn’t come back. They said Okay, good luck, hopefully, we’ll see you in five hours. Thunder and Little Parrot Chief are nearly there. They see all the buildings and wooden houses, and vegetables growing everywhere. They were shocked, as they didn’t know it was going be that big. The buildings went back as far as they could see. They both started feeling very nervous, they got even closer, they could see cowboys on horses coming their way with guns in one hand. Thunder told little parrot to put his hands up, so they both put their hands up and carried on walking. The cowboys got very close, they shouted Get on the floor so they did. The cowboys then got off their horses, tied their hands behind their backs, and stood them up. They walked them back to the cowboy town. They told Thunder and Little Parrot Chief to take a seat, and they sat down. Little Parrot said We need to talk to your leader, it’s urgent that’s why we have traveled very far to get here. The cowboys look at him and say You speak English? Little Parrot Chief says Yes, my dad is Indian, and my mom is English. The cowboys look shocked because it’s rare to see a full-speaking English Indian. Okay, we will go get our leader. The cowboy goes to get him and tells Clint, the boss, we have two Indians. They were walking towards our homes. They told us they had been traveling for thirty-odd days to get here. They say they need to talk to you; it’s important. Clint says, Okay, I’ll get my boots on and I’ll be there in five. Clint comes through the swinging doors, walks over to Thunder and the little parrot, and asks what their business here is and what they want. Thunder replies, We have been traveling for over thirty days to get here. We have a message from Big Wolf. He has asked for you and your cowboys to help fight the underground people. The cowboys laugh, they say Why would we join you people and help you? “ Thunder tells little parrot to tell Clint that you guys have the same problem: the underground people are growing in numbers. If we don’t act now, it will be too late. We know they will attack you guys and kidnap your people even worse than they do now. Let’s not play games. These underground people are getting stronger, cleverer, and more intelligent, and numbers are growing at a fast rate. We are begging you, and we don’t beg anyone. Please, do you think we would travel this far? This is serious, we have seen them in numbers, and you normally only see them in threes or fours, we are seeing them in tens at a time, and imagine how many are underground. Okay, we will think about it. I’ll have a meeting with my men, and I’ll let u know in the morning. Little parrot chief, can u let him know we need to get back to the other men in 4 hours or they will leave and think we’ve been held hostage, and when they get back, they will say it was no good and we’ve been captured. Clint was stubborn, he was old but wise. He knew it was a problem with these underground people, so he organized a meeting in an hour and told the men to release the Indian warriors and to bring them to the meeting. The other cowboys weren’t happy, but they wouldn’t dream of going against Clint; they just did as they were told. Everyone was at the meeting, all the cowboys were speaking about the Indians not being prisoners, and a few started shouting abuse at them. Clint saw this happening and told them to stop it. They all stopped except one, so Clint pulled out his gun and shot him in the foot. The cowboy hopped around screaming, and then he pulled out his gun as he raised it Clint shot him in the face. The blood squirted everywhere, and everyone was in shock. Clint said Now, the next one of you to disobey me or shout any abuse at these Indian guys will follow the same path as him. I’ve gathered you all here to talk about the underground people and the plan the Cherokee tribe has. They want us to join them against the underground people, and I know you’re all thinking that’s a crazy idea, but I think they are right. We can’t win on our own against these underground people alone, and I know we don’t get on with the Indians, but we can all agree this one time to join and win against the underground people. After the battle is done, everything goes back to normal. We go our separate ways, and we still kill Indians if they come near our territory, but for now, we join and see what they have planned.
