Dangerous Closeness

THE SILENT OMEGA Chapter 7 — Dangerous Closeness Silence lingered in the training chamber long after the spirit disappeared. The air still carried traces of silver energy. Lyra stood motionless near the center of the room, her thoughts spiraling wildly. Mate. The word refused to leave her mind. Every strange reaction between them suddenly made terrifying sense. The heat whenever he touched her. The emotional pull. The instinctive sense of safety around him. It was real. And Kael looked like he wished it wasn’t. He turned away first, jaw tense. “You should rest.” Lyra stared at him in disbelief. That was it? No explanation. No discussion. Just distance. Pain flickered briefly through her chest before she forced the feeling down. Of course he didn’t want this. Why would someone like Kael Draven want a broken Omega with dangerous powers? She quickly looked away before he could read the hurt in her expression. Unfortunately— Kael noticed anyway. Guilt stirred unpleasantly inside him. Dangerous. This entire situation was dangerous. Not because Lyra was weak. But because she affected him too much already. His wolf reacted to every glance she gave him. Every shift in her emotions. Every heartbeat. Mate. The instinct roared inside him possessively. Kael crushed it down immediately. Control had kept him alive for years. He would not lose it now. Lyra slowly bent to retrieve the wooden training blade from the floor. Her hands trembled slightly. Kael watched silently. “You’re angry,” he said suddenly. Lyra froze. Then shook her head quickly. A lie. Kael stepped closer. “You don’t hide emotions as well as you think.” Lyra frowned and turned away. Kael sighed quietly. “I’m not rejecting you.” Her breath caught softly. He continued carefully, choosing each word with difficulty. “But mate bonds are complicated.” Lyra looked back at him slowly. Complicated? Kael laughed once without humor. “You’re my student.” “I’m responsible for your safety.” “And now half the supernatural world may start hunting you.” His silver eyes darkened slightly. “This isn’t simple.” No. It wasn’t. But somehow his honesty hurt less than silence would have. Lyra looked down at her glowing arm markings. Kael noticed her fear immediately. “They’ll fade when your energy stabilizes.” Will it stop hurting? She signed slowly. Kael’s expression softened slightly. “I don’t know.” That answer terrified her. Kael noticed. Again. He noticed everything. His gaze lowered briefly to her hands before returning to her face. “You’re stronger than you realize.” Lyra almost laughed bitterly. Strong? She had spent most of her life hiding. Running. Surviving. Kael stepped closer again. Close enough that she could feel his warmth. “You survived Blackthorn Academy alone while everyone tried to break you,” he said quietly. “Most wolves here wouldn’t last a week in your position.” The sincerity in his voice stunned her. No one had ever said something like that to her before. Kael’s gaze held hers steadily. “You adapted.” “You endured.” “That’s strength.” Something inside Lyra shifted slightly then. Small. Fragile. But real. Before she could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the chamber doors. Kael’s expression hardened instantly. “Enter.” The doors opened. A tall Beta guard stepped inside nervously. “Professor Draven,” he said quickly, “the council representatives have arrived.” Kael cursed softly under his breath. Of course they had. Whenever rare supernatural abilities appeared, the High Council interfered. And the council feared power they couldn’t control. The guard glanced uneasily toward Lyra. “They’re demanding to see the girl.” Kael’s entire posture became dangerous immediately. “No.” The guard swallowed hard. “Sir—” “I said no.” Alpha authority rolled through the room violently. The guard lowered his eyes instantly. “Yes, Professor.” Kael looked toward Lyra. “Stay here.” Her eyes widened slightly. Alone? Kael seemed to understand the concern immediately. “No one enters this chamber without my permission.” Then more quietly— “I’ll return soon.” Something about the promise settled her nerves unexpectedly. Kael turned and left with the guard. The heavy doors shut behind them. Silence returned. Lyra exhaled slowly and sat near the fire. Her mind felt exhausted. Moon Healers. Ancient bloodlines. Mate bonds. Prophecies. Everything had changed in less than two days. She touched the silver markings on her arm carefully. Still glowing faintly. Still warm. Who am I? The fire suddenly flickered violently. Lyra looked up sharply. A shadow moved across the far side of the chamber. Not silver this time. Black. Cold energy spread through the room instantly. Lyra stood slowly. Every instinct screamed danger. The shadows near the wall twisted unnaturally before forming into a human figure. Tall. Hidden beneath darkness. Two glowing red eyes opened. Lyra’s breath stopped. The figure smiled slowly. “Well,” a deep voice murmured, “the last Moon Healer is even more beautiful than the stories claimed.” Fear crashed through her instantly. The stranger stepped forward from the shadows. And the entire chamber temperature dropped. “You’ve caused quite a problem for us, little wolf.” Lyra backed away carefully. The man’s red eyes gleamed with amusement. “No need to fear me.” “Not yet.” A symbol burned across the back of his gloved hand— A crimson fang. Her pulse quickened violently. Crimson Fang. How did he get inside the north wing? The stranger tilted his head slightly while studying her. Then suddenly— his expression sharpened. “Interesting.” Lyra stiffened. The man inhaled slowly. And smiled wider. “The Alpha has already marked his scent all over you.” Her heartbeat stumbled. The stranger laughed softly. “This just became much more entertaining.” Then the chamber doors exploded open. Kael stormed inside with murderous fury rolling off him. The moment he saw the stranger near Lyra— his wolf lost control. Power exploded through the chamber. “Get away from her.” The Crimson Fang rogue only smiled. “Oh,” he said softly, “there’s the mate.”
