THE SILENT OMEGA
Chapter 9 — The Shadow Alpha
The atmosphere inside the chamber turned heavy after Caius disappeared.
Headmistress Seraphine walked slowly toward the shattered wall, her expression colder than Lyra had ever seen before.
“The barriers should have kept him out,” she murmured.
Kael crossed his arms tightly. “Someone helped him.”
Silence followed.
Because both of them understood what that meant.
There was a traitor inside Blackthorn Academy.
Lyra felt unease twist painfully in her stomach.
Seraphine finally turned toward her.
“You spoke.”
Lyra touched her throat instinctively.
The memory still felt unreal.
Kael’s silver eyes briefly shifted toward her before he looked away again.
Seraphine noticed that too.
Interesting.
“How many words?” the Headmistress asked gently.
Lyra hesitated before holding up one finger.
One.
Seraphine nodded slowly.
“The seal weakens during emotional surges.”
“Especially around your mate.”
Kael’s jaw tightened immediately.
“Stop saying it like that.”
The Headmistress raised an eyebrow. “Like what? The truth?”
Kael looked annoyed enough to destroy another wall.
Lyra almost smiled.
Almost.
Seraphine’s expression softened slightly as she looked at Lyra again.
“Your mother’s seal was never meant to last forever.”
Fear flickered through Lyra.
Then what happens when it breaks completely?
She signed carefully.
Seraphine’s gaze darkened slightly.
“That depends on you.”
Not comforting.
Kael spoke quietly. “Caius mentioned the Shadow Alpha.”
The room immediately fell silent again.
Even the fire seemed dimmer somehow.
Seraphine looked toward the window.
“The Shadow Alpha was supposed to be dead.”
Kael’s voice hardened. “Supposed to?”
The Headmistress exhaled slowly.
“Twenty years ago, the supernatural territories nearly collapsed during the Blood Moon War.”
Lyra listened carefully.
Seraphine rarely spoke about history unless it mattered.
“There was an Alpha powerful enough to unite rogue wolves, corrupted packs, and dark creatures under one banner.”
Her expression turned grim.
“His real name was erased long ago.”
“People only remember the title he earned.”
“The Shadow Alpha.”
A chill slid down Lyra’s spine.
Seraphine continued quietly.
“He slaughtered entire packs.”
“Destroyed cities.”
“And hunted Moon Healers almost to extinction.”
Kael frowned slightly.
“Why?”
“Because Moon Healers were the only beings capable of killing him.”
Silence crashed through the room again.
Lyra’s pulse quickened painfully.
The spirit’s warning returned to her mind.
Only the Moon Healer can stop him.
Kael looked toward Lyra slowly.
Understanding darkened his expression.
“He’s coming for her.”
Seraphine nodded once.
“Yes.”
Fear settled heavily inside Lyra’s chest.
Kael noticed immediately.
And something dangerous shifted inside him again.
Protect.
The instinct became stronger every hour.
It was becoming difficult to control.
Seraphine stepped closer to Lyra carefully.
“You must begin awakening training immediately.”
Lyra frowned slightly.
Awakening training?
“You need control over your powers before the next full moon,” Seraphine explained. “Otherwise the energy inside you could consume your body.”
Kael’s expression sharpened. “How much time?”
“Nine days.”
Not enough.
Lyra saw the concern flash briefly across Kael’s face before it disappeared again behind cold control.
Seraphine moved toward the chamber door.
“I’ll prepare the moon sanctuary.”
Kael frowned. “You’re taking her there already?”
“We don’t have a choice anymore.”
The Headmistress looked directly at Lyra.
“Moon Healers trained in sacred sanctuaries hidden beneath Blackthorn long before this academy existed.”
Lyra blinked in surprise.
There was more hidden beneath the academy?
Seraphine gave a small nod.
“The sanctuary reacts only to Moon Healer blood.”
“It may help unlock your memories.”
Memories.
Lyra’s stomach tightened immediately.
Most of the memories returning lately were painful.
Blood.
Screams.
Fear.
But she needed answers.
Seraphine opened the chamber doors.
“We leave tomorrow night.”
Then she paused.
“And Kael?”
His silver eyes lifted toward her.
“Control your wolf.”
The Headmistress left before he could respond.
Silence returned again.
Kael exhaled slowly and dragged one hand through his dark hair.
Lyra studied him carefully.
You’re afraid.
The signed words surprised him slightly.
Kael looked away toward the fire.
“Yes.”
The honesty stunned her.
He continued quietly.
“The Shadow Alpha destroys everything he touches.”
Lyra stepped closer slowly.
But you’re strong.
Kael laughed softly without humor.
“Strength doesn’t guarantee survival.”
Something about the sadness in his voice hurt unexpectedly.
Lyra hesitated before carefully reaching toward him.
Kael went still when her fingers lightly touched his wrist.
The mate bond pulsed warmly between them.
Not violent this time.
Gentle.
Comforting.
Kael looked down at her hand silently.
Then slowly lifted his eyes toward hers.
“You shouldn’t trust me so easily.”
Why?
The single signed word lingered heavily between them.
Kael stared at her for several seconds before answering quietly.
“Because monsters don’t always look dangerous.”
Lyra frowned slightly.
She had seen him angry.
Violent.
Terrifying.
But never monstrous.
Kael stepped back slowly.
Distance again.
His control was slipping and he knew it.
Especially after hearing her voice.
One word had nearly shattered every wall he built around himself.
He turned away.
“You should sleep.”
Lyra watched him carefully.
Then slowly signed:
Will you stay?
The question hit him harder than it should have.
Kael closed his eyes briefly.
Dangerous.
Everything about her felt dangerous to him now.
Not because she would hurt him—
but because she made him care.
And Kael Draven had learned long ago that caring about someone was the fastest path to losing them.
Still…
when he looked back at her standing there alone—
small, exhausted, trying so hard not to appear afraid—
his wolf answered for him immediately.
Always.
Kael sighed quietly.
Then moved toward the chair beside the fire.
“I’ll stay.”
Relief softened Lyra’s expression instantly.
And somehow—
that simple look nearly destroyed what remained of his self-control.
Outside the chamber windows, snow continued falling over Blackthorn Academy.
But far beyond the mountains…
beneath a blood-red moon…
something ancient had already begun moving.
And it was coming for her.
