THE SILENT OMEGA
Chapter 5— The Bond Beneath the Moon
The silver light faded slowly from Lyra’s skin.
The combat hall stood in ruins around her.
Broken stone covered the arena floor.
Shattered glass glittered beneath the moonlight pouring through the destroyed windows.
And in the center of it all—
Lyra knelt trembling.
Her breathing came unevenly as strange energy still pulsed beneath her skin like a second heartbeat.
Kael watched her carefully.
Too carefully.
Every instinct inside him screamed the same impossible truth.
Mate.
His wolf had recognized her immediately the moment their energy connected.
But that was impossible.
She was a student.
An Omega.
Silent and fragile—
yet somehow carrying one of the rarest supernatural powers in existence.
Nothing about this situation made sense.
Headmistress Seraphine stepped closer to Lyra slowly.
“Can you stand?” she asked gently.
Lyra nodded weakly and pushed herself upright, though dizziness immediately hit her.
Kael moved beside her instinctively before she could fall.
The moment his hand touched her waist—
heat rushed violently through both of them again.
Lyra gasped softly.
Kael stiffened.
The connection was stronger now.
Dangerously strong.
For one brief second, he felt her emotions clearly.
Fear.
Confusion.
Loneliness.
And beneath all of it—
years of buried pain.
Kael pulled his hand away immediately.
Seraphine noticed everything.
Her golden eyes narrowed slightly.
Interesting.
“Professor Draven,” she said calmly, “escort Lyra to the north wing.”
Kael’s gaze shifted toward her. “The restricted wing?”
“She’ll be safer there.”
Lyra frowned slightly.
Restricted wing?
Very few students were allowed near the northern side of the academy. Rumors claimed ancient relics and dangerous prisoners were kept there.
Kael clearly disliked the idea.
“She should remain under guard,” he said.
“She will,” Seraphine replied meaningfully.
The Headmistress looked directly at him.
“With you.”
The silence that followed felt heavy.
Kael’s jaw tightened.
Lyra sensed tension between them but didn’t understand why.
Seraphine turned toward the shattered doorway.
“I’ll handle the council and the academy panic.”
“No one outside this room learns the full truth.”
Kael nodded once.
Then Seraphine left.
The moment she disappeared, the hall became painfully quiet again.
Lyra wrapped her arms around herself uneasily.
Kael glanced at her.
“You’re cold.”
She shook her head automatically even though she was freezing.
He removed his dark coat without another word and held it toward her.
Lyra stared at it in surprise.
No one had ever treated her gently at Blackthorn.
Most students barely tolerated her existence.
Kael raised an eyebrow slightly.
“That wasn’t a request.”
Slowly, Lyra accepted the coat.
Warmth surrounded her instantly.
And his scent.
Pine.
Smoke.
Winter rain.
Her heartbeat quickened unexpectedly.
Kael noticed.
Of course he noticed.
He noticed everything.
“Come,” he said quietly.
They left the ruined combat hall together.
The academy corridors were chaotic.
Injured students filled the medical wing.
Guards searched every hallway.
Fear spread through the academy like wildfire.
And everywhere they walked—
people stared.
Not at Kael.
At her.
Whispers followed immediately.
“That’s the girl from the arena.”
“She used magic.”
“No, healing abilities.”
“Who is she?”
Lyra lowered her eyes.
The attention made her chest tighten painfully.
Kael suddenly stopped walking.
His silver eyes swept across the watching students.
Instant silence.
No one spoke again.
No one even breathed too loudly.
Fear of Kael Draven outweighed curiosity.
He continued walking.
This time closer to Lyra.
Protectively close.
The north wing stood isolated from the rest of the academy behind massive iron doors marked with ancient wolf symbols.
Kael pressed one hand against the center seal.
The doors groaned open slowly.
Cold air drifted out.
The inside looked nothing like the academy.
No students.
No noise.
Only dim lanterns, stone walls, and silence.
Lyra followed him cautiously down the corridor.
“This place used to belong to the first Alpha families,” Kael explained quietly. “Most of the academy avoids it now.”
Why?
She signed carefully with her hands.
Kael glanced at her fingers.
“You know sign language.”
Lyra nodded.
A faint emotion crossed his face.
Relief.
“Good,” he murmured. “That makes this easier.”
He answered her question while leading her deeper into the corridor.
“Some believe the north wing is haunted.”
Lyra blinked.
Kael almost smirked.
“Personally, I think they’re just cowards.”
For the first time—
Lyra nearly smiled.
Kael noticed that too.
And something strange twisted inside his chest.
They eventually reached a large room overlooking the snowy mountains beyond the academy.
A fire already burned inside.
“This was once a healer’s chamber,” Kael said.
The words made Lyra tense immediately.
He noticed.
“Relax,” he said quietly. “You’re safe here.”
Safe.
The word felt unfamiliar.
Kael moved toward a cabinet and removed medical supplies.
“Sit.”
Lyra obeyed silently.
He crouched in front of her again.
Too close.
Her pulse immediately betrayed her.
Kael carefully rolled up the torn sleeve of her uniform.
The healed wound was completely gone now.
But silver markings remained faintly beneath her skin like glowing veins.
Kael’s expression darkened slightly.
“The power is spreading faster than expected.”
Lyra watched him carefully.
Then slowly signed:
Am I dangerous?
Kael looked at her for several seconds before answering.
“Yes.”
The honesty startled her.
But then he continued.
“Not to me.”
Her breath caught softly.
The room suddenly felt much warmer.
Kael gently touched the silver markings on her arm.
The mate bond reacted instantly.
A violent pulse of heat rushed through both of them.
Lyra gasped.
Kael froze completely.
And suddenly—
his wolf surged forward inside him possessively.
Mate.
The word echoed powerfully through his mind.
Lyra stared at him, confused by the sudden intensity in his eyes.
Kael stood abruptly and turned away.
Distance.
He needed distance.
Because every instinct inside him wanted to pull her close and never let anyone touch her again.
And that terrified him more than the rogues ever could.
Behind him, Lyra watched silently.
For the first time since arriving at Blackthorn Academy…
someone looked at her like she mattered.
And she didn’t know what frightened her more—
the growing danger around her…
or the way her heart reacted to him.
