THE SILENT OMEGA Chapter 5 — Private Lessons Snow fell heavily outside the north wing windows. The academy looked peaceful beneath the moonlight. But Blackthorn Academy had changed overnight. Everyone knew it. Whispers spread through the halls faster than fire. Rogue attack. Dead students. A mysterious silver light inside the combat hall. And at the center of every rumor— Lyra Vale. By morning, students stared openly when she entered the dining hall beside Professor Draven. The silence lasted only a few seconds before whispers erupted. “She’s with him?” “No way.” “Why would Professor Draven escort an Omega?” Lyra kept her head lowered while clutching the strap of her bag tightly. She hated attention. Kael walked beside her calmly, completely unaffected by the terrified silence surrounding him. His presence alone controlled the room. The moment a group of Alpha boys blocked their path intentionally, Kael stopped walking. Slowly. Dangerously. “Move.” One word. That was all it took. The boys immediately stepped aside. Lyra noticed something strange then. Nobody mocked her while Kael stood nearby. Fear protected her better than kindness ever had. Kael led her toward a quieter corner of the hall. Food had already been prepared there. “You need to eat,” he said. Lyra hesitated before sitting carefully across from him. The atmosphere between them remained tense after the previous night. Every accidental touch triggered strange heat beneath her skin. And judging from Kael’s cold distance— he felt it too. Students continued stealing glances toward them from across the room. Especially the girls. Professor Kael Draven had never shown interest in any student before. Never protected anyone. Never escorted anyone. And definitely never sat beside an Omega during breakfast. A blonde Alpha girl suddenly approached their table confidently. Beautiful. Sharp-eyed. Dangerous. Lyra recognized her immediately. Selena Voss. Top-ranked Alpha student. Daughter of a powerful pack leader. And rumored future mate candidate for Kael. Selena smiled politely at Kael. “Professor.” Kael barely looked up. “Miss Voss.” Her eyes shifted toward Lyra coldly. “So the rumors are true.” Lyra remained silent. Selena crossed her arms. “Students are saying she caused the rogue attack.” Kael finally looked at her fully. “And?” Selena hesitated slightly beneath the weight of his gaze. “She’s dangerous.” Kael’s expression remained unreadable. “Yes,” he agreed calmly. The answer surprised both girls. But then his silver eyes darkened slightly. “She’s also under my protection.” The entire table went silent. Selena’s face tightened instantly. Protection from Kael Draven meant something serious at Blackthorn. Something possessive. Lyra’s heartbeat quickened unexpectedly. Selena clearly noticed. “So that’s how it is,” she said quietly. Kael’s voice turned colder. “Return to your table.” The Alpha girl clenched her jaw before finally leaving. But the hatred in her eyes lingered on Lyra long after she walked away. Lyra looked down at her untouched food. Trouble. She was becoming trouble. Kael noticed immediately. “You care too much about what others think.” Lyra frowned slightly. Easy for him to say. He was feared by everyone. Kael leaned back in his chair. “Fear and respect are similar things in this academy,” he said quietly. “Most people here don’t understand either.” Lyra looked at him carefully. For a moment, he seemed… tired. Lonely even. Then the emotion vanished behind his usual cold expression. Kael stood. “Training begins in ten minutes.” Lyra blinked in surprise. Training? Kael glanced toward her. “If the Crimson Fang attacks again, your current skill level won’t keep you alive.” Her chest tightened slightly. “You need control over your abilities,” he continued. “And combat discipline.” Lyra slowly stood. The idea of private training alone with the strongest Alpha in the academy should have terrified her. Instead— it excited her. That realization frightened her more. — The underground training chamber beneath the north wing was enormous. Ancient symbols covered the stone walls. Weapons lined every corner. The air smelled faintly of iron and smoke. Kael tossed her a wooden practice blade. “Attack me.” Lyra stared at him like he was insane. He raised an eyebrow. “You fought rogues yesterday. Surely you can handle sparring.” Easy for him to say. Reluctantly, Lyra took her stance. Kael remained completely relaxed. Confident. Untouchable. Lyra attacked first. Fast strike. Sharp turn. Low sweep. Kael blocked everything effortlessly. The sound of wood clashing echoed through the chamber. Again. Again. Again. Every movement she made— he countered instantly. Frustration built inside her quickly. Kael noticed. “Your emotions control your movements,” he said while dodging another strike easily. “That makes you predictable.” Lyra attacked harder. Kael stepped sideways smoothly and suddenly appeared behind her. Too fast. He grabbed her wrist lightly. “Again.” Lyra spun away immediately, breathing harder now. Sweat dampened her hair. Kael hadn’t even broken a sweat. Infuriating. She lunged again. This time Kael disarmed her instantly. The wooden blade clattered across the floor. Lyra froze as Kael’s arm wrapped around her waist from behind to stop her momentum. Their bodies pressed together for one dangerous second. The mate bond exploded between them. Heat. Electricity. Need. Lyra gasped softly. Kael’s grip tightened instinctively. Mine. The possessive growl from his wolf nearly escaped his throat. He released her immediately and stepped backward. Too close. Way too close. Lyra’s pulse raced uncontrollably. Neither of them spoke. The tension inside the room became unbearable. Kael dragged one hand through his dark hair before speaking roughly. “Focus.” But his voice sounded strained now. Unsteady. Lyra picked up the fallen blade silently while trying to calm her breathing. Something was happening between them. Something powerful. And judging by the conflict in Kael’s eyes— he was fighting it just as hard as she was. Then suddenly— pain exploded through Lyra’s chest. She dropped the blade instantly. Silver light flickered beneath her skin again. Kael moved toward her immediately. “Lyra?” Her breathing became uneven. The markings on her arm glowed brighter. And deep inside her mind— a strange female voice whispered softly. The bond has begun.
