THE SILENT OMEGA
Chapter 11 — The Thing Beneath Blackthorn
The sanctuary shook violently.
Dust rained from the cavern ceiling as deep rumbling echoed beneath the silver floor. The waterfalls surrounding the chamber rippled unnaturally, glowing faintly red beneath the moonlight.
Kael tightened his grip on Lyra’s shoulders.
Her eyes still glowed silver.
Ancient.
Unfamiliar.
For one terrifying second, it felt like someone else was looking through her.
“Lyra.”
His voice cut through the chaos sharply.
Her gaze flickered.
The silver glow dimmed slightly.
Then suddenly she gasped and collapsed against him weakly.
Kael caught her instantly.
The strange ancient presence vanished.
But the sanctuary continued trembling.
Seraphine looked toward the darkness beyond the Moon Tree.
Fear crossed her face again.
“It’s waking up.”
Kael’s expression hardened. “What is?”
Before Seraphine could answer—
a deafening roar echoed beneath the sanctuary.
Not human.
Not wolf.
Something monstrous.
The sound shook the entire cavern.
Lyra flinched violently against Kael’s chest.
He immediately pulled her closer protectively.
The instinct felt natural now.
Too natural.
Seraphine moved quickly toward the silver tree.
“Blackthorn Academy was built above ancient prison grounds,” she said urgently. “The first Alphas sealed corrupted creatures beneath the mountain centuries ago.”
Kael frowned sharply.
“You never mentioned that.”
“Because most of them are dead.”
Another roar thundered through the cavern.
Closer this time.
The silver tree dimmed suddenly.
Dark cracks spread slowly across the sanctuary floor.
Lyra stared at them in horror.
Black smoke leaked upward through the cracks like poison.
Kael stepped in front of her immediately.
“Get behind me.”
The shadows beneath the sanctuary twisted violently.
Then claws burst through the stone floor.
A massive creature crawled upward from the darkness.
Lyra’s breath stopped.
It looked vaguely wolf-like—
but horribly wrong.
Its body was twisted with black veins.
Its eyes glowed crimson.
Sharp bones protruded through rotting skin.
Corrupted.
The creature snarled violently.
Kael shifted instantly.
Bones snapped.
Silver claws extended.
Power exploded around him.
The creature lunged.
Kael met it head-on.
The impact shook the sanctuary.
Lyra watched in shock as Kael slammed the creature backward with brutal force. The corrupted wolf crashed through stone pillars before recovering unnaturally fast.
“Stay back!” Kael shouted.
The creature roared again and charged.
Kael dodged sharply before driving his claws into its side.
Black blood splattered across the floor.
But the creature barely reacted.
Seraphine’s voice rang through the chamber.
“Normal attacks won’t kill it!”
Kael growled in frustration as the creature attacked again.
Too fast.
Its claws sliced across Kael’s chest violently.
Blood spread instantly across his shirt.
Lyra froze.
Kael stumbled backward slightly.
The creature lunged again—
but Lyra moved without thinking.
“Stop!”
The word tore from her throat instinctively.
Silver light exploded from her body.
The entire sanctuary froze.
The corrupted creature screamed.
Actual fear entered its glowing red eyes as silver energy wrapped around its body like chains.
Kael stared at Lyra in shock.
She was glowing again.
Moonlight curled around her skin.
Silver marks spread up her arms and throat.
The creature thrashed violently while the silver chains tightened.
Then suddenly—
the corruption began burning away.
The black veins disappeared slowly beneath the silver light.
The creature’s screams weakened.
And for one heartbreaking moment—
its red eyes turned normal.
Sad.
Relieved.
Before its body dissolved completely into silver dust.
Silence crashed through the sanctuary.
Lyra stared at the empty space where the creature had stood.
Horrified.
She had destroyed it.
No—
purified it.
Kael approached carefully despite the blood running down his chest.
“Lyra.”
Her breathing became uneven.
The power inside her felt unstable again.
Too strong.
Too alive.
Seraphine looked shaken.
“That was purification magic.”
Kael glanced toward her sharply.
“I thought Moon Healers were extinct before corrupted wolves existed.”
“They were,” Seraphine whispered.
Confusion crossed Kael’s face.
Then realization slowly darkened his expression.
“No…”
Seraphine nodded grimly.
“The corruption appeared after the Moon Healers vanished.”
Lyra frowned slightly.
What does that mean?
Seraphine looked directly at her.
“It means your kind may have been the only thing keeping darkness contained.”
Fear settled heavily inside the sanctuary.
Kael looked down at the wound across his chest briefly.
The claw marks were deep.
Too deep.
Lyra noticed immediately.
And instinct took over before thought.
She stepped toward him and placed trembling hands against his chest wound.
Kael froze.
“Lyra—”
Silver light spread beneath her fingers instantly.
Warm.
Gentle.
Powerful.
The bleeding stopped.
The torn flesh slowly began healing before his eyes.
Kael sucked in a sharp breath.
Not from pain.
From the overwhelming connection surging between them.
He could feel her heartbeat.
Her fear.
Her exhaustion.
And beneath it all—
how desperately she wanted him safe.
The mate bond reacted violently to the emotion.
Kael grabbed her wrists gently before the healing drained too much from her.
“That’s enough.”
But the wound had already disappeared completely.
Lyra swayed slightly afterward.
Weak.
Kael immediately caught her.
The silver glow beneath her skin flickered dangerously.
Seraphine stepped closer quickly.
“She’s overusing her abilities.”
Kael looked down at Lyra sharply.
“Why would you heal me first?”
The answer escaped her before she could stop it.
“I was scared.”
Her voice sounded rough and fragile from years of silence.
But she spoke clearly this time.
Kael went completely still.
Lyra froze too.
Another sentence.
Another crack in the seal.
The sanctuary suddenly pulsed with silver light again.
And deep below them—
something massive moved in the darkness beneath Blackthorn.
Something that had just sensed the Moon Healer’s power fully awaken.
