THE SILENT OMEGA
Chapter 13 — The First Touch
Kael’s hand stopped inches from Lyra’s face.
The library felt impossibly quiet.
Outside the tall windows, snow drifted slowly across Blackthorn Academy, but inside the north wing, the air between them burned with tension.
Lyra could barely breathe.
Kael looked at her like he was fighting himself.
His wolf wanted closeness.
Possession.
Connection.
But the man himself still feared what the mate bond could become.
Slowly, carefully, his fingers brushed against her cheek.
Warmth exploded through Lyra instantly.
The mate bond surged violently.
Kael inhaled sharply.
Their emotions crashed together without warning.
Loneliness.
Fear.
Desire.
Protectiveness.
Lyra suddenly felt his exhaustion.
Years of carrying responsibility alone.
The pressure of being Blackthorn’s strongest Alpha.
The grief he kept buried deep inside himself.
And Kael—
Kael felt her pain.
Every cruel whisper.
Every year of silence.
Every moment she believed she was unwanted.
The emotional connection hit both of them so hard that Lyra nearly stumbled.
Kael caught her immediately.
Too close.
Their bodies pressed together just enough for the bond to lose control completely.
Silver light flickered beneath Lyra’s skin.
Kael’s wolf surged forward possessively.
Mine.
The word echoed so strongly through the bond that Lyra felt it too.
Her pulse raced.
Kael looked down at her lips before quickly forcing his gaze away again.
Dangerous.
One more second and he wasn’t sure he would stop himself.
“Kael…”
His name left her mouth softly.
Still rough.
Still fragile.
But every time she spoke, his control weakened further.
Kael closed his eyes briefly.
“You need to stop saying my name like that.”
Lyra blinked in confusion.
A humorless laugh escaped him.
“You have no idea what you’re doing to me.”
The honesty in his voice made heat rush through her chest.
Before either of them could say anything else—
a loud alarm suddenly echoed throughout the academy.
Kael’s expression changed instantly.
Sharp.
Alert.
Dangerous.
The north wing barriers flared red.
Someone had breached the academy grounds.
Kael moved away immediately, all softness disappearing.
“Stay here.”
Lyra grabbed his wrist before he could leave.
Fear flashed across her face.
Kael looked down at her hand silently.
Then more gently than expected, he covered her fingers with his own.
“I’ll come back.”
The promise settled something inside her.
Kael turned and stormed from the library.
Seconds later, Lyra heard the distant sounds of shouting echo through the academy corridors.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
—
Outside Blackthorn Academy, snowstorms raged violently across the mountains.
Students gathered nervously inside protected halls while guards rushed toward the academy gates.
Kael arrived at the courtyard to find Seraphine already waiting.
And she looked furious.
“What happened?” Kael demanded.
One of the guards stepped forward anxiously.
“A patrol team disappeared near the eastern forest.”
“We found this.”
He handed Kael a bloodstained academy crest.
Kael’s eyes darkened immediately.
Rogues.
Seraphine looked toward the distant forest beyond the gates.
“No,” she said quietly.
“Something worse.”
A howl suddenly echoed across the mountains.
Not normal.
Corrupted.
The sound made every wolf in the courtyard freeze instinctively.
Kael’s expression hardened.
The eastern forest shadows moved unnaturally.
Then glowing red eyes began appearing one by one between the trees.
Dozens of them.
The students panicked instantly.
“Inside!” the guards shouted.
But Kael remained still.
Watching.
Calculating.
The corrupted wolves slowly emerged from the darkness.
Twisted bodies.
Black veins.
Rotting claws.
An entire pack.
Seraphine cursed softly.
“They’re testing the barriers.”
Kael frowned.
“No.”
His silver eyes narrowed.
“They’re distracting us.”
The realization hit instantly.
Lyra.
Kael turned sharply toward the academy.
At that exact moment—
the north wing barriers shattered.
A violent explosion echoed through Blackthorn.
Students screamed.
Kael moved instantly.
Pure Alpha power exploded around him as he sprinted toward the north wing faster than most wolves could even track.
Fear clawed violently through his chest.
Not fear for himself.
For her.
—
Inside the north wing library, Lyra backed away slowly.
Three masked rogues stood between her and the exit.
Crimson Fang symbols burned across their armor.
One of them smiled darkly.
“The Shadow Alpha sends his regards.”
Lyra’s pulse thundered painfully.
The rogues spread out carefully.
Predators cornering prey.
“You’re coming with us,” another growled.
Silver energy flickered beneath Lyra’s skin instinctively.
The rogues noticed.
And smiled wider.
“Yes,” the leader whispered. “Awaken for us.”
Lyra grabbed the nearest metal candle holder defensively.
The rogues laughed.
Then suddenly—
the library doors exploded inward.
Kael entered like death itself.
Power slammed through the room violently.
Every window shattered instantly.
The rogues froze.
Because the strongest Alpha in Blackthorn Academy no longer looked controlled.
He looked murderous.
Kael’s silver eyes locked onto Lyra first.
Checking.
Protecting.
Relieved.
Then slowly—
his gaze shifted toward the rogues.
And the entire room temperature dropped.
“You touched,” Kael said softly, “what belongs to me.”
The mate bond snapped violently through the room.
Lyra’s breath caught.
Even the rogues looked startled by the raw possessiveness in his voice.
Then Kael attacked.
