THE SILENT OMEGA
Chapter 15 — The Bondmark
Rain hammered against the north wing windows.
The storm outside Blackthorn Academy had lasted for hours, dark clouds swallowing the moon completely. Thunder echoed across the mountains while students remained trapped inside their dormitories under strict lockdown.
But the real storm existed inside Kael.
He stood beside Lyra’s bed in silence, arms crossed tightly while she slept.
Or tried to.
Even unconscious, she looked restless.
Pain flickered across her face every few minutes as faint silver light glowed beneath her skin.
The corruption crystal had affected her badly.
Too badly.
Seraphine stood near the doorway reading from an ancient leather-bound text.
“The awakening is accelerating beyond normal limits,” she said quietly.
Kael didn’t look away from Lyra.
“How bad?”
Seraphine hesitated.
“That depends on her emotional stability.”
Kael laughed once without humor.
“So we’re doomed.”
The Headmistress closed the book slowly.
“Kael.”
His silver eyes finally shifted toward her.
“You need to understand something about Moon Healers.”
The seriousness in her voice immediately sharpened his attention.
Seraphine stepped closer carefully.
“Their powers are connected directly to emotional bonds.”
“Love. Grief. Rage. Fear.”
Kael’s expression darkened slightly.
“The mate bond.”
“Yes.”
Seraphine looked toward Lyra.
“The stronger your connection becomes, the stronger her awakening grows.”
Silence filled the room.
Kael already knew that.
Every touch between them intensified her power.
Every emotional surge cracked the seal further.
And lately—
the bond was becoming almost impossible to ignore.
Seraphine’s voice softened slightly.
“You care about her already.”
Kael looked away immediately.
Dangerous topic.
“She’s under my protection.”
“That’s not what I said.”
Kael exhaled sharply.
Before he could answer—
Lyra suddenly cried out softly in her sleep.
Silver light burst beneath her skin again.
Kael moved instantly.
“Lyra.”
She trembled violently against the blankets.
Fear pulsed through the bond painfully.
Nightmare.
Kael grabbed her hand without thinking.
The reaction was immediate.
The silver energy calmed slightly beneath his touch.
Her breathing steadied.
Seraphine noticed everything silently.
Kael sat beside the bed carefully while still holding Lyra’s hand.
“Lyra,” he said more gently.
Her silver eyes suddenly opened.
For one brief second—
they glowed completely white.
Then the light faded.
Lyra stared at him in confusion before realizing their hands were tightly intertwined.
Heat rushed through her chest instantly.
Kael felt it too.
The mate bond surged warmly between them.
Too strong.
Too intimate.
Lyra slowly tried pulling her hand away.
Kael tightened his grip instinctively.
Both of them froze.
Kael released her immediately.
Silence filled the room awkwardly.
Seraphine looked entirely too amused.
“I’ll leave you two alone,” she said smoothly.
Kael glared at her.
The Headmistress ignored him and walked out of the room.
Traitor.
The door closed behind her.
Now the silence became unbearable.
Lyra sat up slowly against the pillows.
Her throat still hurt slightly from speaking earlier.
Kael watched her carefully.
“How do you feel?”
She hesitated before answering softly.
“Tired.”
His entire body stilled again.
Her voice.
Still fragile.
Still quiet.
But becoming clearer every time she used it.
Lyra noticed his reaction immediately.
“What?”
Kael dragged one hand through his dark hair.
“You don’t realize what your voice does to me.”
Heat rushed into her cheeks instantly.
Kael looked frustrated with himself for admitting that aloud.
Lyra glanced down nervously.
The mate bond pulsed gently between them again.
Kael stood abruptly and moved toward the window.
Distance.
He needed distance before he lost control completely.
Outside, lightning flashed across the mountains.
Lyra watched him carefully from the bed.
“You’re avoiding me.”
The quiet accusation made him close his eyes briefly.
“Yes.”
Her chest tightened painfully.
Kael turned toward her again.
“And if I don’t,” he said quietly, “I’m going to do something reckless.”
Her pulse quickened immediately.
The storm outside seemed louder suddenly.
Kael stepped closer again despite himself.
Drawn toward her like gravity.
“You should be afraid of how intense this bond can become,” he admitted.
Lyra looked up at him silently.
But she wasn’t afraid.
Not of him.
That realization nearly destroyed what little restraint Kael had left.
He moved before thinking.
One second he stood beside the window—
the next he was directly in front of her.
Too close.
His hand lifted slowly toward her throat.
Lyra’s breath caught.
Kael’s fingers lightly brushed the silver marks spreading near her collarbone.
The mate bond exploded.
A sharp silver glow suddenly appeared beneath Lyra’s skin.
Then—
a matching silver mark burned across Kael’s neck.
Both of them froze.
Pain flashed briefly through Kael’s throat.
Lyra stared in shock.
The silver symbol glowing against his skin looked ancient.
Beautiful.
Terrifying.
Seraphine’s voice suddenly echoed from the doorway.
“Oh no.”
Kael turned sharply.
The Headmistress looked genuinely alarmed now.
“The bondmark formed already?”
Kael frowned. “Bondmark?”
Seraphine stared at the glowing silver symbol on his neck.
“That only happens when a mate bond reaches soul recognition.”
Silence.
Lyra’s heartbeat became dangerously fast.
Kael’s expression hardened.
“What does that mean?”
Seraphine answered quietly.
“It means your souls have completely accepted each other.”
The storm outside thundered violently.
But inside the room—
neither of them moved.
Because suddenly the mate bond no longer felt temporary.
Or avoidable.
It felt permanent.
And judging by the fear flickering briefly across Kael’s face—
that terrified him.
