Chapter One

Elizabeth POV I adjusted my mask as we stepped into the party hall, my eyes darting around. The entire room was filled with luxury, from beautiful attires to expensive jewelry and make-up. I was born in wealth, but I so much hated one of these rich parties. I only saw it as a way for rich people to show off their wealth and make it seem like they were not boasting. The only reason I was here was because of Bridget, who stood beside me in her gold mask and a matching beautiful blue dress and jewelry. She was beautiful, even with the mask on. She invited me to this event to ‘unwind’ according to her. To be honest, I knew I needed it. It has been one week and I have yet to forget about the horrible words Justin used on me in our last argument. Worse, he has refused to pick up my phone calls. It was hell for me in my head. I had not been able to concentrate on anything, and as usual, Bridget saw this as a way to make me feel better. “You did not tell me it was a club” I leaned over to her ear, but I still had to yell due to the music She laughed. “You are here, Beth. Enjoy it” she responded, moving her body to the beat of the music. I shook my head. Bridget and parties. “Let’s head to the bar” she told me, and we headed towards it but then she paused halfway when she spotted her father gesturing for her to come over to him. “I can already guess what that is about” Bridget muttered, making a smile at her father. “Good luck”, I teased him, and she glared at me before walking over to her father. Parties like this were a great way to introduce daughters to suitable suitors that would likely lead to a wedding. Luckily, Bridget's father was not forcing her into anything. All he did was introduce them to the man and if she liked him, they could pursue a relationship together. Unfortunately for him though, Bridget was very hard to please, which led to these numerous meetings. Feeling alone, I chose to head to the bar to have a drink or two. I needed to flush out some bad memories that had some relation to my boyfriend. “A shot of martini” I ordered the moment I took a seat The bartender nodded without a word, took out a shot cup and filled it up. “Thank you,” I said, grabbing the cup and throwing the contents into my mouth. The moment the sour taste hit my taste buds, I squeezed my face, placing the cup down. “Refill” I instructed. Without a minute more, the bartender did as instructed. At my third glass, I sighed. “Can I get something hotter than this? I need to unwind”, I told the bartender. “I don't think you can hand-” The bartender's words went back to his throat as I threw him a dirty look. Did I look like I cared? I wanted something that would eliminate the thoughts of Justin from my mind. Her boyfriend of five years spoke to her like she meant nothing to him again. “I’ll get it for you. It's at the back”, the bartender informed me. “Well then hurry up,” I said, already feeling tipsy from the three shots of Martini I had taken. The bartender arrived minutes later with a bottle of wine. He was about to pour it into a shot cup but I raised my hand, stopping him. “A glass”, I instructed. He spun around, got a glass and filled it before passing it to me. “Thank you”. I appreciated it with a smile before taking a sip from the cup. I nodded. “Perfect”, I muttered. The bartender went back to his job as I enjoyed my drink. From one glass to two, I noticed a man at the side having a drink and staring at me, but I ignored him. Then I moved to my third glass and my fourth glass. I could feel my brain shutting down. It was perfect because this time my troubles were no longer in my mind. In fact, I could vaguely remember them. Filling my fifth glass, I noticed the man was still staring at me with the side of his lips curved up. I wanted to ignore it the same way I had been ignoring it for thirty minutes now, but then I was too drunk to think. A sudden form of boldness came into me, and I was ready to confront him about his creepy behavior. It was bad for a man to stare at a girl for that long. I had a boyfriend and even though we were currently fighting I still loved him dearly, so I was not going to fall for his tricks. I had my lines all planned out. I jumped down from the stool and held the counter for support as I felt dizzy and unstable. The bartender looked at me worried, but I smiled and shook my head. Luckily, this bar was far away from the eyes of the main party, or I would have been scolded severely. I took out my purse, took a couple of dollar notes and passed them to the bartender without counting it. Once I was done speaking with this man, I planned to leave immediately. If I drank more of that wine, I would sleep here. Slowly but staggering, I approached him, barely keeping my eyes open. He knew I had approached, and he stared at me. From the look of it, he was tipsy, but it seemed he had more control of himself than I was. A few steps closer to him, I felt my body burning up. I ignored it and kept going. “You are a creep” I said, which was followed by a long belch. I covered my mouth instantly as he stood up, his height towering over me. “I…” Unfortunately, I could only hear a word from him before the heat in my body increased. However, before I could do anything about it, I felt the energy in my body disappear as I dropped to the floor, blacking out immediately.
