Joe didn’t answer immediately.
The car slowed, tires pressing against the asphalt.
“But we are almost there,” Joe said, glancing at me briefly before returning his gaze to the road.
“I know.”
My voice came out calm. I considered it too calm for someone who had just found out a lie big enough to destroy a family.
“Then why?” Joe asked.
“Because walking in there now would be a mistake.”
The certainty behind the words stopped him. The car rolled forward a few more seconds before he finally turned the wheel, making a smooth U-turn.
I knew he might have been offended. But it was good that he didn’t argue or resist.
