53 Midnight lay on his stomach deep within a dense bush, watching his mother between the gaps in the lower branches. He knew the signs and knew she was packing up to leave. What he didn’t know was whether she would expect him to go with her and whether Tarkyn would let her take him. If she didn’t want to take him, he would feel hurt but relieved. If she did want to take him and insisted on it, and Tarkyn let him go, he would run away. Midnight didn’t analyse why he would run away.
