The Hero

"Stop!" Babymaker pleads, his voice strained with desperation. "Stop it, man!" But Victor seems oblivious to the pleas of his companions, his actions driven by a ferocious intensity. With each stomp, Carey's cries grow more desperate, the sound ringing in Coffee's ears like a haunting melody. Finally, Bennet rises to his feet, discarding Carey's now-empty bag onto the ground. "I've got the goods already! Chill,". Victor's bitter laughter echoes through the alley, a stark contrast to the anguish filling the air. With heaving breaths, he retreats, running a hand through his hair in a gesture of frustration. But before anyone can react, he darts past the two boys, his eyes fixed on Carey, who is now on her knees, desperately crawling towards her bag. With a savage determination, Victor raises his right leg and brings it down with brutal force on Carey's ankle. A gut-wrenching scream tears from her lips as she collapses, clutching at her injured ankle with trembling hands. Coffee watches in horror as the scene unfolds before him, each moment etching itself into his memory like a nightmare he cannot escape. Carey's cries of pain fill the alley, her anguished sobs echoing off the walls as she writhes in agony. It's like a slow-motion horror film playing out before Coffee's eyes, his mind unable to comprehend the brutality unfolding before him. Bennet's voice breaks through the chaos, his disbelief evident as he shouts, "What the hell!?" Babymaker once again intervenes, shoving Victor away from Carey as Bennet joins in, their combined efforts pulling Victor back. As they retreat, Coffee stands rooted to the spot, his mind reeling from the shock of what he has just witnessed. Bennet passes by him, shaking his head in disbelief and mouthing the words, "It's broken." Coffee's gaze follows them, his heart heavy with guilt and helplessness as he looks upon Carey's hunched form, a silent witness to the aftermath of their senseless violence. Coffee quickly jumps into action, dialing for help before rushing over to Carey's side. Without a word, he scoops her up into his arms, her cries of pain mingling with his hurried footsteps as he carries her further uphill. Carey's tears stain Coffee's shirt as she clings to him, her sobs echoing through the silent streets. "My bag," she manages to choke out between sobs. "They took the money... for school... my tuition..." Coffee's heart sinks at her words. "Doesn't your ankle hurt?" he asks gently, concern etched on his face. She sniffles, shaking her head. "Not more than spending the rest of my life in this damn village," she replies, her voice breaking with despair. "They took my tuition fees..." As they make their way uphill, the whispers and stares of the townspeople follow them, but Coffee pays them no mind. His sole focus is on getting Carey the help she needs. Finally, the ambulance arrives, its flashing lights cutting through the dimming light of the afternoon. Coffee steps in front of it, bringing it to a halt before helping Carey inside. "Take care of her," he instructs the paramedics, his voice filled with urgency. Inside the ambulance, Carey's cries gradually subside as they speed towards the hospital. Coffee sits by her side, offering what little comfort he can as they navigate the winding roads to their destination. Coffee waits anxiously as Carey receives treatment, his mind consumed with worry for her well-being. The moments tick by slowly, each one filled with a sense of dread as he watches the medical staff tend to her injuries. Before long, the commotion of the hospital is interrupted by the frantic arrival of Old Mr. Smith. His panicked shouts fill the air as he searches desperately for Carey, his fear palpable in the tense atmosphere. As Mr. Smith's eyes fall upon Coffee, a sudden shift occurs. His expression darkens, his features contorted with anger as he strides towards Coffee with purposeful steps. Without a word, he approaches, his gaze piercing as he delivers a chilling command. "Get lost, boy," he growls, his voice dripping with disdain. At first, Coffee is taken aback by the harshness of Mr. Smith's words. But then realization dawns upon him like a sudden revelation. Old Mr. Smith knows. He knows about the robbery, about Coffee's involvement. Panic courses through Coffee's veins as he understands the gravity of the situation. With a heavy heart, Coffee silently acquiesces to Mr. Smith's demand. Handing over Carey's bag without a word, he turns and walks away, his mind swirling with fear and regret. As Coffee enters the old house, he's greeted by the surprised gaze of his grandfather. The elderly man's words catch Coffee off guard, his heart skipping a beat at the unexpected mention of Carey. "Heard you're seeing Old Smith's grandchild, Carey..." his grandfather begins, his tone laced with curiosity. Coffee's eyes widen in disbelief, his mind racing to comprehend the sudden revelation. "You heard what?" he blurts out, his voice tinged with urgency. "That you're dating..." his grandfather trails off, confusion etched across his features. Coffee interrupts him with another question, his voice rising with agitation. "Heard from who!?" His grandfather looks at him, bemused by his reaction. "Everybody's talkin' 'bout it," he responds casually. "She hurt her ankle, and you lost your mind with worry. Heard you stood front the ambulance and errthing." Without waiting for further explanation, Coffee lets out a sharp, incredulous scream before storming into his room and slamming the door shut behind him. Leaning against the door, he tries to process the whirlwind of emotions coursing through him. Amidst the chaos, his grandfather's voice echoes from the other room, offering unsolicited advice. "I don't know what you've been doing lately, if it ain't nothing good, better leave the girl alone," he cautions, his words heavy with concern. Coffee groans in frustration, interjecting with a plea. "Grandpa..." But his grandfather remains resolute, his warning lingering in the air. "I said my piece... Old Smith might look like he's all bark and no bite, but he'll kill every last one of you," he concludes solemnly, his footsteps fading away as he retreats. Alone in his room, Coffee sinks to the floor, his mind consumed by turmoil. The weight of his grandfather's words hangs heavily upon him, leaving him grappling with uncertainty and fear for what the future may hold. The next day, Coffee sits outside his grandfather's house, the warmth of the morning sun casting a golden glow around him. A cigarette dangles from his lips as he stares off into the distance, lost in thought. Memories of simpler times flood his mind, the days when he and Bennet would while away the hours in idle conversation. But now, those moments feel like a distant echo of the past, overshadowed by the weight of recent events. As Coffee grapples with the turbulent course his life has taken, Bennet suddenly materializes before him, breaking the silence. "You haven't been picking up my calls," he remarks, his tone tinged with concern. Coffee's gaze hardens, his frustration bubbling to the surface. "You haven't been acting like my Bennet," he retorts sharply, his words laced with accusation. Bennet recoils slightly, taken aback by the venom in Coffee's voice. "Wha-" he begins, but Coffee cuts him off with a vehement outburst. "You left me out! You left me out and let that crazy son of a b***h hurt Carey, twice!" Coffee's finger jabs accusingly at Bennet, punctuating each word with righteous indignation. Tension crackles in the air as the two friends lock eyes, their emotions roiling beneath the surface. Before Bennet can muster a response, Babymaker's voice cuts through the fray, a sharp interruption in the heated exchange. "Hey!" he calls out, his voice urgent as he rushes towards them from a distance, his expression one of urgency. The duo barely acknowledges Babymaker's intervention, their anger still simmering beneath the surface as they exchange vicious glares. But Babymaker refuses to back down, positioning himself squarely between them with a determined expression. "Both of you, back up!" he commands, his voice firm as he attempts to diffuse the escalating tension. But his efforts are in vain as Coffee and Bennet simultaneously shove him aside, sending him sprawling to the ground. In the blink of an eye, they're at each other's throats once more, trading verbal blows with a ferocity that borders on madness. But their heated exchange is abruptly cut short by a heart-rending sound that pierces the air—a mournful wail that echoes through the stillness.
