Mia woke up later than usual. She was tired from the day before. But something tugging her chest.
She couldn't really pinpoint what it was. Yet she felt like something was missing.
Adrian always texted her in the mornings, saying, "Good morning Satin! Did you sleep well?"
Satin was the pet name Adrian used only with her. She always found it cute.
Mia checked her phone, but there was nothing. She thought, "Maybe he was sleeping in as well?" Yet she knew better than anyone he would ever sleep in.
She decided to take initiative and text him first in the morning. Something she never really had the chance to do.
Once she finished writing and pressed send, a red exclamation mark appeared. She felt like her heart dropped.
She tried to call but it was going straight to voicemail. Mia couldn't understand what was going on. Her face went pale once she started thinking.
What if something happened to him? Was he outside yesterday even though flash flood warnings keep popping?
She immediately called Evan. Yet again, it went straight to voicemail. She stood up. Mia could no longer lay in bed. Dorian was still laying lazily there.
"What's wrong, Mia?" Dorian asked her while rubbing his eyes.
"Nothing. I just need to go and check something, I think you should leave too."
"Yeah sure. If you need any help though, let me know." Dorian slowly stood up and went towards the bathroom to wash up.
Mia was rapidly getting ready and waited for Dorian to finish getting dressed so she could escort him out.
Once Dorian was ready too, he asked, "Want me to drop you off at wherever it is you are going?"
"No, it's alright. I can drive myself."
"Well, if you need help with anything let me know."
As soon as they left the room and got to the door.
"Did you have these flowers here yesterday? You should put them in a vase or something. They look fresh." Dorian said, picking the flowers up from the shelf.
Mia's eyes went wide, her face became ghostly pale and her hands shook so much that she dropped the phone. Her knees started giving out.
Right before she fell on the ground to her knees, Dorian caught her in an embrace.
"Babe what's up? Are you okay?" His voice did not have any worry, it was the tone of a random passerby asking if you were alright.
Mia was staring blankly at the shelf, a small box. She gathered all of her strength and strolled towards it.
With her shaky hands she picked it up and opened it.
Adrian was here.
That thought alone made her shiver with fear and something you could call disappointment. A disappointment in herself.
"Hey babe, do you want me to call 911 or something? You look bad."
Just when Dorian was about to touch her shoulder. Mia side stepped him.
Mia looked at him with deep fury in her eyes.
"LEAVE! GET OUT! GET THE f**k OUT!" Mia completely lost her composure.
Dorian understood what was going on. He guessed that it was most likely that broke boyfriend of hers found out about them.
A small smirk played on Dorian's face.
"Hey, hey, calm down. It's not like all of it is my fault. Isn't it better though? I mean you might as well become mine now that he learned about us."
"GET OUT!" Mia pointed towards the door.
"Well s**t, I will let you calm down. Whenever you feel like it, call me." Dorian turned and left nonchalantly.
The apartment became quiet. Dead silent.
Mia's tears started dropping slowly. Why hasn't he got angry? Why hasn't he confronted me and asked what was going on? Why did he leave by not saying anything? She thought to herself.
She looked at the ring in the box. He didn't come here to check on her. He didn't come to hang out with her.
Adrian came to propose. This thought made her angry. Not at Adrian and not at Dorian. She got angry at herself.
Three years of relationship. Three years of love, was about to be destroyed. The worst part of it all was her own doing.
But then she tried to comfort herself. She tried to find excuses for what she did. Nothing came to mind.
She just sat there in her apartment and sobbed uncontrollably.
Mia decided to find Adrian. To ask if he would give her another chance. She knew where they lived so she jumped into her car and started driving.
Rain has not stopped since last night. It brought all their memories together. It felt like rain. No, the sky itself was trying to punish her in its own way.
She remembered how Adrian would get angry at her for drinking too much. How he tried his best to make her quit vaping.
Mia remembered how he would save money just for her birthdays and their anniversaries. To take her somewhere nice.
Then the memories of their first meeting flashed in front of her eyes.
Mia was working at the same company as a janitor three years ago. Her mother was sick in the hospital, and she was doing her best to save money for her treatment.
She always wanted a better life for herself, but it was as if the whole world was against it.
"Hi! Your name is Mia, right? Nice to meet you. My name is Adrian."
She knew who he was. Secretly, she had a crush on him since the first day she saw him. Love at first sight, some might say.
Mia was just scared that the universe might take away him as well if she got too close.
Yet she said to herself. Maybe, just maybe she could be happy with someone like Adrian by her side as well.
"Nice to meet you Adrian."
Adrian had this big calm smile on his face. She always saw him smiling even when he made a mistake and the supervisor would scold him for it.
Since that day, whenever Adrian saw her, he would always talk to her. If he saw her sad, he would bring her a chocolate to cheer her up and just talk to her. He would come up with all the bad jokes possible.
Yet she didn't find his actions overbearing or annoying. She found it remarkably cute.
Mia thought to herself that Adrians actions was just his kidness. Yet he didn't leave her even when his kindness became expensive.
When Mia got accepted to the nursing school. She looked at her admission papers and her knees went weak. She started crying uncontrollably in the hallway of admissions office. It was not due to happiness but rather due to the price tag on her dream. First payment for the school was due in two weeks but she already spent every penny that she had on her mothers treatment.
A day later Adrian found Mia sitting at the stairs crying at work. She was sobbing with her hands covering her face.
"Whats wrong Satin?"
Mia looked at Adrian "Don't call me that."
"Why? You don't like it?" a playful smirk playing on his face.
"No it sounds too nice."
"Alright Satin don't worry. I won't ever stop calling you Satin." Adrian puffed his chest proudly.
Mia wanted to laugh but instead she cried harder.
She finally decided to find comfort in Adrian. She told him everything about what she has been going through and lastly her tuition problem.
Adrian just sat there patiently listening to her. After she was done.
"How much is it?"
"Adrian no!"
"How much?" She just gently relented with a comforting smile on his face.
Once Adrian got his answer he immediately asked his supervisor for extra shifts. Morning, night or weekend shifts, it didn't matter he took anything they offered.
He would still come to see her whenever he could. His eyes would be red or have dark circles under his eyes. still smelling like cardboard, sweat, and warehouse dust.
Mia would ask him to stop. Yet he would always answer with "You can yell at me once you become a nurse."
She remembered laughing at that.
One day she couldn't hold her feelings anymore and kissed him under the dim light of the warehouse.
For the first time she believed that universe was finally giving her something back.
