Chapter Four

Sitting back on the bed, I grabbed my phone and dialled Mark’s number. It rang four times before he picked it up. I could hear music and laughter in the background. “Ada.” “You know leaving me with Fred and Daphne was a d**k move. You could have waited for me.” I admonished, rubbing my toes. He snickered over the phone. “Yeah, sorry about that.” I lay back down on the bed. “I had to walk all the way back to the hotel with heels on. My poor toes are red and sore and I have blisters Mark. Blisters! You seriously owe me Singer.” “How about when this hunt is finished and we get back to the bunker, I’ll rub your feet and watch a chick flick. Deal?” “Hmm,” I smiled, pretending to consider it. “You got a deal, as long as you make the popcorn too. Oh and no chick flick, you know I hate them.” “It’s a date then,” he agreed. I heard talking outside the motel door and I sat up. “They’re back from the diner, don’t leave me here with them for too long Mark. I can’t watch him act all lovey dovey while I’m here.” I hear him shuffle around. “Ok sweetheart. I’ll be ten minutes.” He hung up on me and I turned as the door opened, Dan walking into the room first holding Stacey’s hand as she trailed in behind him. He frowned when he saw me sitting on the bed. I wasn’t going to apologise for what he had said and he knew it. The room went silent, I swear I heard crickets, until Stacey cleared her throat. “Ada, I just want to say sorry for what happened before,” she claimed, “it was my idea to check out the building and my fault for putting us at risk of being caught. So for that I apologise.” I let out a long sigh and looked at her. She was only saying this because Dan had asked her too, I could tell from the way she looked up at him and smiled, Dan smiling back down at her. Why the hell did he have to like her? “Look, it’s not like we’re going to be besties, so you can keep your fake apology. I really don’t care. All I want is to kill these vamps and be on my merry way.” “Ada,” Dan muttered, shocked at my tone. “You’re being rude.” “I’m not being rude, I’m just saying it how it is.” I stated, shrugging my shoulders. Stacey crossed her arms as she looked at me, reminding me of a spoilt five year old who wasn’t getting their way. I was fully expecting her to stomp her feet. “You know, I didn’t have to agree to work with you.” “Good luck killing that best of vamps on your own.” I was getting pretty tired of her now. The way she was all over Dan, constantly touching him, giggling and batting her eyelashes at him was really pissing me off. “You agreed because you knew you couldn’t do it alone so don’t start acting all high and mighty now. At the end of the day, we are doing you a favour, not the other way round, sweetie.” She glared at me, her eyes narrowing as she took a step towards me. “Excuse me? Who the hell do you…” My body was tense as I slowly stood up, my nostrils flaring as I drew in slow and steady breaths to try and keep my anger at bay. Her eyes widened and she took a step back before Dan grabbed her arm and walked her towards the door. “Come on, you need to get ready for tonight. I’m going to talk to Ada for a minute.” Stacey nodded, throwing me a dirty look before she left, slamming the door behind her. Dan rounded on me. “What the hell is your problem?” I stepped right up to him, my pulse speeding and my heart pounding as my anger continued to rise. “My problem? Oh, I don’t know, maybe it’s because you’ve been eye f*****g each other all day and not doing your f*****g job! I think you need to figure out your priorities before coming at me. Seems to me like this hunter has you wrapped around her finger already.” Dan looked down at me, his hazel eyes cold and hard, his fists clenching by his sides. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. We checked out the place to try and work out how many vamps we were dealing with. That’s all. It’s not that big of a deal.” “And what would have happened if they’d spotted you, huh? Took you into their nest like you were delivered right to them. Meals on wheels. We wouldn’t have known about it because you didn’t bother to f*****g tell us! You just agreed with some hunter slut we’ve only known for half a f*****g second and put yourself in danger!” I spat, my own fists clenching. I didn’t hear the door open behind me as I stepped even closer to Dan, practically nose to, well chest, my anger starting to get the best of me. “It’s nauseating watching her fawn all over you. If you’re gonna f**k her Dan, then f**k her already so we can leave this s**t hole of a town.” I felt a hand wrap around my arm, pulling me back away from Dan, his eyes widening at my comment. “You have, haven’t you? You’ve already f****d her, haven’t you? You f****d her. That’s why you’re being so defensive of her because you know we were right, but you’d already slept with her and didn’t want us to know. You…you just…you can’t even see what’s right in front of your face, can you?” I yelled at him, struggling to free myself from whoever was pulling me back. “Your a f*****g asshole Dan.” Turning, I swung a punch at the person pulling me back, only for them to grab my hand and pull it down. “Ada.” I heard Mark’s voice but I was too upset and angry. “Get your f*****g hands off me!” I yanked my arm away and stormed out the door, slamming it hard behind me. I knew Mark would follow me eventually, so I walked over to the bench next to the motels vending machine and cradled my head in my hands, my eyes filling with tears. I started to sob quietly, my shoulders quaking and my anger ebbing away with each tear that hit the ground. He slept with her. He f****d her after just a couple of hours. Sniffing, I wiped my nose and stared at my hands. Get it together for f***s sake, I chided myself. You knew this was going to happen either before and after we killed the nest, that he’d f**k her. I just didn’t expect it to happen so quick. Marks hand wrapped around my own as he sat down beside me, startling me a little. I hadn’t heard him approach, or the sound of the motel door opening or closing. “You ok?” He asked, rubbing small circles on the back of my hand. “Yep, I’m good.” I beamed, straightening my back and giving him a wide smile. I had a job to do and there was no way I was going to let Dan or this hunter get me off my game. Mark frowned. “Ada…” Shaking my head, I squeezed his hand and plastered on a smile. “Mark please, I just…” I took a deep breath, “I just want to kill these vamps and go home, ok?” He wrapped his arms around my shoulders and pulled me towards him, my head resting against him. “Ok sweetheart,” he mumbled as he kissed the top of my head.
