Lyra
My blood turned to ice. The word hung in the air between us like a death sentence. I scrambled backward against the tree trunk, bark scraping against my palms as I tried to put distance between myself and those glowing eyes.
"Who's there?" My voice came out as barely a whisper. "Show yourself."
A low chuckle rumbled from the shadows, dark and menacing. "Such a brave little wolf, giving orders in my territory."
The darkness shifted, and he stepped into the moonlight.
I forgot how to breathe.
The man before me was massive, easily a foot taller than Damon, with shoulders broad enough to block out the moon. His hair was as black as midnight, and when he moved, every muscle rippled beneath his skin like he was carved from stone. But it was his eyes that made my wolf whimper and cower inside me. Golden and predatory, they held an intelligence that was both ancient and terrifying.
This wasn't just any wolf. The power radiating from him was suffocating, pressing down on me like a physical weight. My instincts screamed at me to submit, to bow my head and bare my throat. Only an Alpha could command that kind of presence.
"Darius Blackthorne," I breathed, recognition hitting me like a lightning bolt.
His lips curved into a cold smile that didn't reach his eyes. "You know me. Good."
Of course I knew him. Every wolf in our territory had heard the stories. Darius Blackthorne, Alpha of the Shadow Ridge Pack, our greatest enemy. The wolf who had conquered three neighboring packs in the last five years. The beast who showed no mercy to those who crossed him.
"What do you want?" I pressed myself harder against the tree, wishing I could disappear into its bark.
"I think you know." He took a step closer, and I caught his scent, pine, leather, and something wild that made my wolf stir despite her fear. "I felt it the moment you entered these woods. The pull. The certainty."
My heart dropped into my stomach. "No. That's impossible. The ceremony already.."
"Paired you with that pathetic excuse for a warrior?" Darius's eyes flashed with anger. "The one who rejected you in front of your entire pack like you were garbage?"
Shame burned through me again. He'd been watching. He'd seen my humiliation.
"I felt your pain when he severed the bond," Darius continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "But what that fool doesn't understand is that you were never his to begin with."
"You're lying." I tried to stand, but my legs wouldn't cooperate. "The Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes. If she paired me with Damon.."
"The Moon Goddess gave you to me long before tonight," Darius interrupted. "I've been searching for you for months. Following your scent. Waiting for the right moment."
Terror clawed at my throat. "You've been stalking me?"
"Protecting what's mine," he corrected, taking another step closer. "Do you think it's a coincidence that you ran directly to me tonight? Your soul knows where it belongs."
I shook my head frantically. "No. You're wrong. I don't belong to anyone. Especially not you."
The temperature around us seemed to drop. Darius's eyes narrowed, and the air itself felt heavy with his displeasure.
"Little wolf," he said, his voice deadly quiet. "You seem to misunderstand your situation."
In one fluid motion, he closed the distance between us. I tried to scramble away, but he caught my wrist in an iron grip, hauling me to my feet. His touch sent electricity shooting up my arm, the mate bond, real and undeniable.
"Feel that?" he murmured, his face inches from mine. "That's not fear making your heart race."
"Let me go," I gasped, pulling against his hold. "Please. I won't tell anyone I saw you. I'll pretend this never happened."
His laugh was sharp and cold. "Pretend? You think I'd let you walk away now that I've found you?"
"My pack will look for me. Alpha Marcus will.."
"Will what?" Darius's grip tightened. "Send the same warriors who just watched you get humiliated? The same Alpha who didn't even defend you?"
His words cut deep because they were true. No one had stood up for me tonight. No one had cared when Damon tore me apart in front of everyone.
"They're still my family," I said weakly.
"Family doesn't abandon their own," Darius snarled. "Family doesn't let their daughter get treated like refuse. I would burn down anyone who dared speak to my mate the way they spoke to you."
"I'm not your mate!" The words burst out of me with more strength than I'd shown all night.
Darius went completely still. The golden glow in his eyes intensified, and when he spoke, his voice carried the full weight of an Alpha's command.
"You are mine, Lyra Blackwood. The Moon Goddess marked you for me before you were born. Your soul calls to mine. Your scent drives my wolf wild with need." His free hand cupped my cheek, thumb brushing away a tear I didn't realize had fallen. "You can fight it all you want, little wolf, but you cannot change fate."
"You just want to use me," I whispered. "To hurt my pack. To make them weak."
Something flickered across his face, surprise? Hurt? But it was gone too quickly to be sure.
"Is that what you think? That I would claim my destined mate as a weapon?" His voice was softer now, but somehow more dangerous. "You know nothing about me."
"I know enough. Everyone knows what you are. What you've done."
"What I've done," he repeated slowly, "is protect what's mine. Build something strong. Something worthy." His eyes burned into mine. "Something you'll rule beside me."
"I don't want to rule anything. I just want…"
"What? To go back to a pack that treats you like dirt? To spend your life apologizing for existing?" His grip on my wrist shifted, becoming almost gentle. "You're stronger than you know, Lyra. I can feel it in you."
"You're wrong," I shook my head. "I'm weak. Everyone says so. Even the Moon Goddess.."
"The Moon Goddess gave you to me," Darius cut me off. "Do you think she would pair the most powerful Alpha in the region with someone truly weak?"
His words made something flutter in my chest, but I crushed it down. This was manipulation. It had to be.
"I won't go with you," I said, putting every ounce of determination I had into my voice. "I'd rather die first."
The change in him was instant and terrifying. His eyes flashed, and the air around us charged with deadly energy. When he spoke, his voice was the growl of a predator about to strike.
"You would rather die than be cherished? Protected? Loved?" Each word was punctuated by a step closer, until I was trapped completely against the tree. "You would rather die than feel what it's like to have someone who would kill for you?"
"You don't love me," I gasped. "You don't even know me."
"I know you're brave enough to face a ceremony that terrified you. I know you're strong enough to endure public humiliation without breaking. I know you have enough fire in you to challenge an Alpha to his face." His hand slid into my hair, tilting my head back until I was forced to meet his gaze. "And I know that every instinct in your body is screaming that you belong with me."
He was right, and I hated him for it. Despite my terror, despite everything I knew about him, something deep inside me responded to his presence. The mate bond pulled at me like a physical chain, urging me toward him.
"This is crazy," I whispered. "You're crazy."
"Perhaps." His thumb traced along my jawline, sending unwanted shivers through me. "But you're mine, crazy or not. And I protect what's mine."
"No." I pushed against his chest with both hands, but he didn't budge. "I won't let you use me against my pack. I won't.."
My words cut off as a howl echoed through the forest. Then another. And another. The sound was coming closer.
"Sounds like your pack finally noticed you were missing," Darius said, not seeming concerned at all. "Took them long enough."
Hope flared in my chest. "They'll find me. They'll stop you."
"Let them try." The smile that crossed his face was sharp and predatory. "It will save me the trouble of hunting them down later."
"You can't fight my entire pack!"
"Watch me."
Before I could react, he swept me up into his arms like I weighed nothing. I struggled against him, hitting his chest with my fists, but it was like punching granite.
"Put me down! Let me go!"
"Never," he said simply, starting to walk deeper into the forest.
"Help!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. "Someone help me!"
The howls grew closer. I could hear crashing through the underbrush now, voices calling my name.
"Lyra!"
"Where are you?"
"She went this way!"
"Please," I begged Darius, tears streaming down my face. "Please don't do this. I'm nobody. I'm not worth starting a war over."
He stopped walking and looked down at me with an expression I couldn't read. "You're worth burning the world for," he said quietly. "And the sooner you understand that, the easier this will be."
"Darius, please.."
"There's nothing you can say that will change my mind," he said, resuming his steady pace away from the approaching voices. "You can scream, fight, beg, or cry. You are coming with me. Tonight. Forever."
"HELP ME!" I shrieked as loud as I could. "DARIUS BLACKTHORNE HAS ME!"
The forest exploded with sound. Howls of rage echoed from every direction as my pack realized who had taken me. I could hear them shifting, the sounds of bones breaking and reforming as they took their wolf forms to give chase.
"Let the hunt begin," Darius murmured, and suddenly we were moving faster than should have been possible.
The trees blurred past us as he ran with inhuman speed, carrying me like I was made of feathers. Behind us, the howls grew louder, more desperate. My pack was coming, but even I could tell they were falling behind.
"They'll never stop hunting you," I gasped, clinging to his shirt as branches whipped past my face. "They'll follow us to the ends of the earth."
"Good," Darius replied, not even breathing hard despite our speed. "I was getting bored anyway."
The howls began to fade into the distance. My pack, my family, such as they were, was losing ground. Soon, I'd be completely alone with this terrifying Alpha who claimed I belonged to him.
"Please," I whispered one last time. "Please take me back."
Darius glanced down at me, his golden eyes softening for just a moment. "You'll understand soon enough, little wolf. Everything I do, I do for us."
The last howl from my pack echoed faintly behind us before disappearing entirely into the night..
