Chapter 05: The Pact Beneath the Ice.

607 Words
The truth was older than the crown. Older than the throne. Older than Aelyra herself. The chamber lay beneath the Frostbound Palace, carved not by hands, but by winter. Its walls were smooth ice veined with pale blue light, as though something ancient breathed beneath the surface. No torches burned here. None were needed. The cold remembered. Aelyra stood alone at the centre of the chamber. She had come here only three times in her life. Once as a child. Once as a queen. And now… as a woman standing at the edge of becoming something else. She removed the Crystal Crown and placed it upon the ice. The diamonds dimmed. The winter waited. “You called me,” the voice said—not aloud, but everywhere. In the walls. In her blood. In the space between heartbeats. Aelyra lowered herself to one knee. “I did,” she replied. “And I will do so again.” The ice cracked beneath her palm—not breaking, but opening. A breath of cold older than storms rose to meet her, curling around her wrist like a living thing. “You were born marked,” the winter said. “Long before you chose the throne.” Aelyra closed her eyes. “I know.” She remembered the night her mother died. The storm that should have killed them both. The infant who did not cry—only stared, eyes glowing faintly blue. The frost that formed around her cradle, untouched by flame. The pact had not been signed in words. It had been sealed in survival. “Your blood carries my claim,” the winter continued. “But a claim is not a crown. Every bond demands a price.” Aelyra’s breath fogged. “Name it.” Silence fell—deep, vast. Then: “You will never belong wholly to warmth.” The words cut deeper than steel. “You will feel love,” the winter said, “but it will never come without loss. You will rule, but every victory will take something from you. And when the end comes… I will come for what is mine.” Aelyra’s fingers curled against the ice. “This is not new,” she said quietly. “I have lived it.” The winter stirred—something like approval. “In return,” the voice said, “I will answer you. I will lend you my strength. My memory. My silence.” Images flooded her mind. Battles frozen in time. Enemies buried beneath eternal snow. A blade that could command storms. “And Frostbane?” Aelyra asked. “A key,” the winter replied. “And a warning. You may wield me… but never command me.” Aelyra opened her eyes. “And if I refuse?” The chamber darkened. “Then the North falls,” the winter said simply. “And you will die as a woman instead of reigning as a force.” She rose slowly to her feet. “I did not come here to refuse.” She pressed her palm fully to the ice. Cold surged through her veins—not pain, not mercy, but truth. The pact flared to life, ancient and unbroken, binding flesh to frost, heart to season. Above her, the crown ignited once more, diamonds blazing like captured stars. Far above the chamber, the storm changed its course. Aelyra lifted the Crystal Crown and placed it back upon her head. She was no longer merely the Queen of Ice. She was its chosen voice. And somewhere beyond the frozen walls, the world shivered—unaware that winter had just renewed its claim.
