I froze. "Monster?" My hand shot to my face instinctively. "She could have lived longer," he continued, his tone cold, almost cruel. "If she hadn't insisted on keeping you." I lunged forward. "Shut up!" I nearly screamed. "You have no right—!" "Enough." His voice was low, dangerous, like a blade drawn in the dark. My steps stalled, as if some invisible force held me in place. He waved his hand. "Bury her." The warriors moved immediately, as if performing a routine chore. I spun to stop them, but someone seized my shoulders with iron grip. "Let go of me!" I struggled. "That's my mother!" "Precisely because she is your mother," My father said flatly, "she cannot remain here." I was forced to stand at the doorway, powerless, as they carried her away. No ceremony. No prayers.
