Chapter 4: Secrets in the Ashes
The fire crackled softly as Luna sat in silence. The warmth did nothing to comfort her. Her body was sore, her mind restless, and her heart heavy. Ryker was sleeping beside the dying flames, a slight wince on his face with every breath he took. His wounds were deeper than she first realized, and though she’d cleaned them as best as she could, he needed real help. A healer.
But there was no healer here.
No pack. No home.
Just trees, silence, and betrayal.
Her eyes shifted upward to the moon, full and bright above the tall branches. The same moon she once prayed to for love. For guidance. For Kade.
But now, even the moon felt like a stranger.
“You were never just a mate. You were the key.”
That voice again. Echoing in her head since the moment she shifted. It wasn’t her wolf. It wasn’t a memory. It was something deeper. Like the truth trying to push through the lies she’d lived with.
Luna closed her eyes.
What am I the key to?
She didn’t know. But she was going to find out.
Morning came with a chill in the air.
Ryker groaned as he sat up, his hand pressed to his ribs. Blood had soaked through the cloth she tied around him.
“You look like hell,” Luna muttered, passing him a piece of dried meat she had scavenged from her pack.
He forced a half-smile. “Feel like it too.”
“We need to move. You need a healer. And I need answers.”
Ryker looked at her, his expression guarded. “You’re sure about this?”
Luna nodded. “I’m done running. I want to know what Kade did. Why he gave me up. What he’s hiding.”
Ryker studied her for a long moment. “If we go back, we won’t be safe.”
“I’m not going back to beg,” she said. “I’m going back to burn the lies down.”
There was fire in her voice. Real fire. And Ryker saw it.
He nodded slowly. “Then there’s someone we need to visit first. She was close to your mother. She might know something.”
“My mother?” Luna’s voice cracked slightly.
“She wasn’t just a Luna. She was more powerful than most knew.”
Luna’s breath caught.
She remembered very little about her mother. Just a soft smile. A sweet scent. And a lullaby. Then… nothing.
“She died when I was seven,” Luna whispered. “In a rogue attack.”
“That’s what you were told,” Ryker said. “But that’s not what happened.”
Luna’s heart stopped.
“What are you saying?”
He stood slowly, wincing. “Come with me. I’ll show you.”
They walked for hours, deeper into the woods. Past the river. Over hills. Through dense forest trails that only someone like Ryker could remember. He moved slowly, but with purpose.
Finally, they reached a clearing.
At the center was a stone cottage, half-collapsed, covered in vines and moss. The roof was falling apart, and the windows were broken. But Luna felt something when she stepped closer.
A pulse.
Like her blood recognized the soil beneath her feet.
“What is this place?” she asked.
Ryker looked at her. “Your mother’s secret house. She came here when she needed peace. Or when she needed to hide.”
Luna stepped through the broken doorway. Dust and ash covered the floor. Burn marks stained the walls.
“She died here,” Ryker said quietly. “Protecting something.”
Luna felt like the ground tilted under her.
“No,” she whispered. “She died in a rogue attack. That’s what Father told me. That’s what Kade said.”
“They lied.”
Ryker walked to the far wall and pulled away a burned curtain. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Inside was a small wooden box.
He handed it to Luna.
Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a piece of cloth—torn, faded, but with a symbol stitched into it.
A crescent moon wrapped in a circle of fire.
She had never seen it before.
“What is this?”
“It was your mother’s mark,” Ryker said. “She wasn’t just a Luna. She was part of an ancient bloodline. Wolves blessed by the Moon Goddess herself.”
Luna stared at the cloth, her heart thudding.
“What happened to her?”
“She found out something she wasn’t supposed to,” Ryker said. “Something Kade’s father had been hiding. She came here to protect the truth. But someone found her. This house was burned. She was murdered.”
Luna’s throat tightened. “Why would Kade lie to me?”
“Because the truth could destroy him,” Ryker said. “And maybe you’re the only one who can bring it to light.”
As Luna sat in the ruins of her mother’s hidden home, something strange began to happen. The fire pit in the center of the room flickered to life on its own, as if touched by invisible hands.
Luna stared at the flames. They danced higher and higher, glowing with unnatural light.
Then she heard it.
A whisper.
“Daughter of flame… born of the moon…”
Luna backed up, heart pounding.
“Did you hear that?” she asked Ryker.
He nodded slowly. “It’s starting.”
“What’s starting?”
“Your awakening.”
Morning came again, but it felt different. The air was heavy with something she couldn’t name. Ryker’s wounds had been patched up, but his exhaustion was still visible. He sat at the small fire Luna had started, his gaze distant. The past day had left them both shaken.
“We need to move quickly,” Ryker said, wiping the sleep from his eyes. “We have little time.”
“Where are we going?” Luna asked.
“There’s a woman,” Ryker said, his voice low. “She’s old, but she knows things. Things that could help us understand what’s happening. She was close to your mother. She may even know why Kade’s father wanted her dead.”
Luna’s heart tightened at the mention of Kade. The man she had loved. The man who had destroyed everything.
“I don’t want to see him,” she whispered. “I can’t face him.”
Ryker gave her a serious look. “We’re not going to face him. Not yet. We need answers first.”
Luna nodded. “Then let’s go.”
They moved through the forest, their feet crunching the dry leaves beneath them. The silence between them grew heavy, filled with unspoken words.
Luna’s thoughts kept drifting back to Kade. She had loved him with all her heart, trusted him beyond measure. But now? Now she didn’t even know who he was anymore.
What has he done?
By the time they reached the woman’s home, Luna was on edge. The closer they got, the more she felt the weight of the truth pressing on her. She needed answers. Needed to know why Kade had betrayed her. What he had hidden from her all these years.
The house they came to was smaller than Luna expected—an old, wooden cabin tucked away in a quiet corner of the forest. The door was slightly ajar, and a faint light flickered inside.
Ryker knocked on the door, and a frail voice called out, “Come in.”
Inside, the air was thick with the scent of herbs. An elderly woman sat at a table, her silver hair braided down her back. Her eyes were sharp, despite the lines of age on her face.
“Ryker,” she greeted him. “And the daughter of the Moon.”
Luna froze. How did she know?
The woman smiled gently. “I’ve been waiting for you, child.”
They sat around the table, the old woman’s gaze never leaving Luna. “Your mother was more than just a Luna. She was part of the ancient bloodline of the Moon’s chosen. And you… you are her legacy.”
Luna’s chest tightened. “What does that mean? Why did she die? Why was she hiding?”
“The truth is more dangerous than you think,” the woman said. “And now, it’s time for you to understand it.”
Luna’s breath caught in her throat. “Tell me.”
The woman looked at Ryker. “It’s not my place to tell her. But the time is coming, and the truth will be her weapon.”
The fire flickered again. But this time, the flames didn’t just dance—they roared, expanding in the small cabin.
Luna jumped up, eyes wide. “What is happening?”
The woman stood, a knowing look in her eyes. “It’s awakening. Everything is.”
Suddenly, the door slammed open, and Luna’s heart dropped into her stomach.
The shadow wolves were back.
But this time, they weren’t alone.
The hooded figure appeared in the doorway, his dark eyes glowing. “Time’s up.”
Luna froze.
Ryker stepped forward, growling, “You won’t take her.”
The shadow wolves howled, their eyes burning with malice.
The woman turned to Luna. “You are the key, but only if you accept it.”
Luna’s pulse quickened. The truth was here. But so was the danger.
She looked at Ryker, seeing the fear in his eyes as the shadow wolves closed in.
Luna could feel the power rising inside her, but she wasn’t sure if she was ready to unleash it.
The hooded figure spoke again. “The Moon is fading, and you’re the last of the line.”
Luna gritted her teeth. “I’m not your pawn.”
With that, she reached into her soul, her hands trembling as her wolf spirit ignited.
A wave of raw, untamed power surged from her, sending the shadow wolves crashing to the ground. The cabin walls trembled. Ryker stumbled back, awestruck by the force coming from her.
But just as quickly as the power surged, it withdrew, leaving Luna standing in the center of the room, panting, her chest heaving.
The hooded figure’s laugh
echoed through the cabin. “You’re too late.”
The ground beneath them cracked.
And then—the earth split open.
