Chapter 7: Bloodline of Shadows The silence that followed Ryker’s confession was deafening. Luna stared at him, her thoughts spiraling into chaos, unable to process the avalanche of truths that had just been dumped on her. Her heart felt like it was caught in a vice, squeezed tight with confusion, fear, and something else she couldn’t name. The Shadow Wolf was her blood. Her mother’s first mate. The man who had just thrown Ryker across the room with a flick of his wrist. The one who had stirred a power inside her that even Ryker couldn’t reach. She stumbled back a step, her hand bracing against the splintered wall. “How long?” she whispered, her voice raw. “How long have you known?” Ryker’s jaw clenched. “Since I saw him in the clearing that night. The way he moved, the way he looked at you—it was exactly like the stories the Elders told. I didn’t want it to be true. But I knew.” Luna looked down at her hands. They trembled, glowing faintly with silver veins that pulsed with a strange energy. She remembered how his touch hadn’t hurt. How his presence had stirred something ancient in her blood. She didn’t want it to make sense. But it did. “He said I was born from the blood of the Luna Queen,” she said slowly. “That I’m meant to rule. Is that true?” Ryker hesitated. “I don’t know everything. But I do know your mother was powerful. More powerful than anyone ever admitted. She was descended from the original line of Luna Queens—pure daughters of the Moon Goddess. But they were hunted, Luna. Slaughtered. The council believed their power was too dangerous to exist.” “And my mother?” Luna whispered. Ryker looked away. “She was the last. Until you.” A strange stillness settled over her. The pieces of her life—her childhood, the loneliness, the unexplained strength, the dreams she couldn’t explain—they were beginning to fit together like jagged shards of a broken mirror. “I saw her,” Luna murmured again. “In the vision. She told me not to trust the one who hides the truth… or the one who seeks my crown.” Her eyes lifted to Ryker. “That could be both of you.” Pain flashed through Ryker’s expression. “I never wanted your crown, Luna. Only your heart.” “And yet you kept this from me,” she replied, her voice quiet but sharp. “You didn’t even give me the choice to face it.” “I was afraid,” Ryker said, stepping closer. “Afraid that if you knew, you’d feel drawn to him. That you’d choose him over me.” She flinched at his words. Because deep down, buried under everything, she had felt it. The pull. The power. And it terrified her. “I don’t want power,” she said. “I never asked for any of this.” Ryker reached for her hand. “You may not want it, but it’s in your blood. And it’s waking up, whether you like it or not.” Luna pulled her hand away. “Then what happens now? What am I supposed to do?” Ryker’s gaze turned serious. “You fight it. You fight him. We find a way to seal that power again, or control it—before he uses it to twist you into something you’re not.” She turned away, hugging herself. “And if I can’t control it?” “Then I’ll die trying to protect you,” he said simply. “Even if it means protecting you from yourself.” Her throat tightened. But before she could speak, a low rumble echoed through the forest outside. The cabin walls vibrated with a pulse of energy. Luna’s eyes widened. “He’s still close,” she whispered. “He didn’t go far.” Ryker tensed immediately, shifting slightly to block her with his body. “Then we need to leave. Now.” But Luna shook her head. “No. I need answers. I need to know what he’s planning.” “Luna—” She turned to him, eyes glowing faintly now. “I saw my mother. She said to trust the bond. And I do. But she also said to trust my heart. And my heart is telling me there’s more to this.” A moment of silence passed between them. Ryker’s expression was torn, but finally, he gave a reluctant nod. “Then we’ll find the answers together,” he said. “But not here. It’s not safe.” They moved quickly. Luna grabbed her coat and slung it over her shoulders, trying not to think about how heavy her limbs felt. The more this power awoke, the more it drained her—mentally and physically. Outside, the night had deepened. The moon hung full and bright above them, casting silver light through the trees. The wind whispered through the leaves, carrying the faintest trace of a growl. Ryker led the way, shifting into his wolf form to scout ahead. Luna followed on foot, her senses unusually sharp now. She could hear the scurrying of mice under roots, the beat of wings from an owl overhead, the distant crackle of a fire. And something else. A heartbeat. Familiar. Steady. Watching. She paused, turning toward the trees. “I know you’re there,” she said quietly. The Shadow Wolf stepped out of the shadows, his eyes glowing gold in the moonlight. No threat. No attack. Just calm, eerie silence. “You’re stronger than I expected,” he said, his voice like smoke curling around her thoughts. “Even now, your blood is remembering.” “What do you want from me?” Luna asked. He tilted his head. “To free you. To help you become what you were meant to be.” “You mean rule.” He smiled faintly. “No. I mean survive. Because soon, they’ll come for you. The Council. The Alphas. They won’t risk letting a Luna Queen live.” Luna swallowed hard. “And you want to use me as a weapon against them.” “No,” he said. “I want you to decide. You deserve that much.” She stared at him. His face was familiar in a haunting way. Like a dream she couldn’t wake from. His features echoed her own—sharper, darker, but unmistakable. He wasn’t lying about their blood. “What happened to my mother?” she asked softly. “The real story.” He looked up at the moon. “She tried to escape. To hide you. I was already cursed—banished, hunted. But she believed you could be born free of it. She stayed with your father, hoping the bond would protect her. But it didn’t. They found her when you were just a baby. And they killed her.” Luna’s fists clenched. “And you didn’t stop them?” “I was already dying,” he said. “Fading from the curse. I only survived because I bound myself to the shadows.” He stepped closer, but this time, Luna didn’t flinch. “You were her legacy,” he whispered. “And they tried to erase you. But you survived. And now the blood calls to you.” Luna could feel it again. That hum in her veins. That howl in her bones. “I don’t want to become like you,” she said. He didn’t look angry. He looked… sad. “Then don’t. Become something better. But do it with your eyes open.” Footsteps crashed through the underbrush. Ryker burst into the clearing, teeth bared. But the Shadow Wolf stepped back into the dark without a word, melting away like mist. Luna turned to Ryker, who was breathing hard, eyes darting. “He didn’t hurt me,” she said quickly. “He just… talked.” Ryker looked torn between relief and frustration. “You shouldn’t be alone with him.” “I wasn’t,” she said. “Not really.” Ryker's eyes softened, but his shoulders remained tense. “He’s playing a long game, Luna. He knows exactly what he's doing.” “So do I,” she whispered. As they moved again through the trees, something inside Luna settled. She was still afraid—of what she might become, of what the truth might cost—but there was also clarity. She was no longer just a girl running from fate. She was a Luna. A daughter of the moon. And she would decide her own path. Far above them, the moonlight flickered, as if the Goddess herself was watching. Waiting.
