Chapter 2: The Rogue’s Warning The night was heavy, with only the whisper of wind and the crunch of leaves beneath Luna’s boots. Darkness pressed around her as she wandered deeper into the forest, each step shaky but determined. Her heart still throbbed from the pain of Kade’s rejection, and her eyes burned with unshed tears, but she didn’t look back. There was nothing left for her in the Darkfang Pack. Every tree she passed looked the same, every shadow felt like a ghost. But she kept walking. She had no destination. No map. No plan. Just pain. And the need to be far, far away from the man who broke her. Her wolf—usually a source of strength and instinct—remained painfully silent, tucked deep inside her, wounded. Luna had never felt this empty before. Her wolf was part of her. But after the rejection, it was like she was gone, hiding or grieving. Maybe both. She wrapped her arms around herself and walked faster. The forest thickened, the silence growing louder. Snap. A branch broke behind her. She froze. Her breath caught in her throat as she turned slowly, dagger in hand. Her eyes scanned the shadows. Nothing. Then— Another growl. Low. Guttural. Something was out there. Luna took a shaky step back. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears. The forest suddenly felt less peaceful and more like a trap. She held her dagger out. “Show yourself.” From the darkness, a tall figure stepped forward. A man. No—he smelled of wolf. A rogue. His clothes were torn, and a jagged scar slashed down the side of his face. His eyes glowed golden-orange under the moonlight. Luna’s breath hitched. She tightened her grip on the dagger. “I’m not here to hurt you,” the rogue said, voice calm but rough, like gravel. “Then what do you want?” she asked, trying to keep the tremble out of her voice. “I could ask you the same. A she-wolf wandering these woods alone, carrying the scent of the Darkfang Alpha? That’s either brave or foolish.” She narrowed her eyes. “I had no choice. I left.” His gaze studied her. “You’re the one who got rejected last night.” Her throat closed up. “You know?” “Everyone knows. Word travels fast. Especially when an Alpha humiliates his mate in front of the whole pack.” Luna’s chest ached. “Why do you care?” “I don’t,” he said. “But I also know what happens to wolves who run into this forest broken and bleeding.” Luna took a step back. “If you’re trying to scare me—” “I’m trying to warn you.” “Warn me of what?” He stepped closer, slowly. “There are things in this forest far worse than rejection. You don’t know what you’ve stepped into, Luna.” She stiffened. “How do you know my name?” “I told you. News travels.” Luna’s fingers curled tighter around her blade. She didn’t trust him, but something about the way he looked at her—like he recognized the pain inside her—made her pause. “What do you want from me?” she asked. He tilted his head. “Nothing. Except to keep you from dying.” She blinked. “What?” “The Alpha might’ve let you go, but others won’t. A rejected mate carries a powerful scent. You’re marked, whether you know it or not. And there are wolves—hunters—who’d love to claim what Kade threw away.” Luna’s stomach turned. “Why?” “Because a fated mate who’s been rejected is vulnerable. And because some rogues see you as a prize. A way to hurt the Alpha who cast you out.” She took another step back. Her instincts screamed at her to run. But her legs wouldn’t move. The rogue looked at her, expression unreadable. “You want to survive? Then come with me.” She shook her head. “I don’t even know your name.” “Ryker.” “Why should I trust you, Ryker?” He gave a small, bitter smile. “You shouldn’t. But what other choice do you have?” She looked around. The darkness seemed to close in tighter. The forest no longer felt like a hiding place. It felt like a trap. Luna sighed, her shoulders sinking. “Fine.” They walked for hours, Ryker leading the way with quiet confidence. He moved through the forest like he was born in it, avoiding noisy branches, choosing paths that felt hidden and safe. Luna followed, clutching her small bag and trying not to fall behind. They didn’t speak much. The silence between them was heavy but not uncomfortable. Finally, they reached a clearing surrounded by trees. A small camp sat in the center—just a fire pit, a makeshift tent, and a few wooden crates. Ryker tossed some dry wood into the pit and struck a spark. Soon, a fire crackled to life. “Sit,” he said. Luna lowered herself onto a log, her legs aching. She watched as Ryker handed her a piece of dried meat and a flask of water. “Thanks,” she murmured. He sat across from her, resting his elbows on his knees. “How long were you with the pack?” “Since I was born,” she said softly. “My mother died when I was a child. The pack was all I had.” He nodded. “And Kade?” “We grew up together. I thought we were close. I thought…” Her voice cracked. “I thought he loved me.” Ryker didn’t interrupt. “I waited so long to turn eighteen. I thought the moment we felt the mate bond, everything would fall into place. But the moment he sensed it, he looked disgusted.” Pain laced her words. Ryker’s eyes narrowed. “Then he rejected you in front of everyone.” She nodded, tears pricking her eyes again. “And accepted Raven right after. She looked so smug. Like she’d won.” Ryker’s lips thinned. “She didn’t win. Not really.” Luna looked at him. “Why do you say that?” He leaned closer. “Because Raven’s not just another wolf. She’s from Crimson Claw.” Luna blinked. “The rival pack?” Ryker nodded. “They’ve been trying to merge with Darkfang for years. Raven is their Alpha’s niece. That rejection wasn’t just personal. It was political.” The weight of his words hit her like a punch. “Kade rejected me for power?” Ryker’s gaze was hard. “It was planned. Your pain is part of a deal.” Luna’s heart twisted. “He used me.” Ryker didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to. Tears slid down Luna’s cheeks as she gripped the edge of the log. “I loved him. I would’ve done anything for him.” “That’s what made you dangerous,” Ryker said quietly. “You weren’t weak, Luna. You were strong. But strong hearts scare selfish men.” Silence settled between them again. Luna wiped her eyes. “What do I do now?” Ryker stood and threw another log on the fire. “You survive. You heal. And if you’re willing… you fight back.” She looked up at him. “How?” His expression darkened. “There are others like you. Rejected. Abandoned. Left for dead. We’ve built something out here—a network. We protect our own. And we’re watching Kade.” Luna stared at the fire, her thoughts spinning. She had lost everything… but maybe she could still find something new. Maybe even find herself. Then— A sharp howl echoed in the distance. Ryker stiffened. “They’re here.” “Who?” “Kade’s scouts.” Luna’s blood turned cold. “What do they want?” Ryker grabbed a long blade from behind the log. “To drag you back. Or silence you before you learn too much.” Panic surged in her chest. “What do we do?” “We run. Now.” He grabbed her hand, and they darted into the trees, firelight fading behind them. The forest that once seemed quiet now roared with danger. Footsteps crashed behind them—fast, brutal. Luna’s heart pounded. Ryker’s grip was firm, guiding her through the maze of trees. Then— A figure leaped out from the darkness. A scout. Snarling. Eyes glowing. Ryker threw Luna behind him and shifted in one swift motion—his wolf form massive, silver-gray fur bristling. He lunged. Teeth clashed. Bones cracked. Luna stumbled back, watching in horror as Ryker fought off the scout, but more shadows moved in the trees. More were coming. And Luna was unarmed. Alone. Until a low, unfamiliar voice growled behind her. “Well, well. The Alpha’s rejected mate. What a prize you’ll make.” She spun around—and saw three more rogues, eyes filled with hunger and bloodlust.
