Best friends

The hospital where mom worked and my high school were rather close, just about 20 minutes drive.

on Fridays and Saturdays I would go and wait for her to get off work and we would go home together

one day after school I took the bus as usual and I was dropped off at the hospital,

I would go and sit by the entrance where there were some benches and wait for mom to get off work.

I was approaching the benches when I heard someone call me.

looked behind and it was Jessica

"hey Lily, what are you doing here" she asked

"I am waiting for mom to get off work" I responded

"she works here too" Jessica seemed surprised

"yes she does, does your mom work here as well" I asked

"yeah she works as a pharmacist, let's sit while we wait" she added

I was a bit surprised both our moms do the same job it's possible they have already met I thought.

"I never got to ask you which middle school you attended" Jess asked

oh I am not from this town actually, mom just got transferred here a few months ago

"no wander you seem not to know the place that well"

wait what do you mean by that" I asked her shyly

she just looked at me and laughed,

we sat there for 30 minutes and talked about how it was like moving to a different town,

my mom came to find me.

I introduced Jessica to her and she was surprised that I made a friend

she started telling jess about how I have never had many friends, which by the way made me feel embarrassed

I thought that if Jess knows about it she will not want to be my friend.

"mom That's enough, we should probably go" I enterupted her

"yes you are right we are running late we have to pick up Kesia" agreed

"lily do you want to come to my house on the weekend, we could study for the coming assessments" Jess said

I was caught off guard by what she said I was just staring at her, I thought after what mom said she would not want anything to do with me

"of course she will come over, I will drop her off and pick her up my self" my mom responded

and coughed, looking at me to say something

"oh okay I be there" I responded

"great then I will text you my address" Jess said

I was really happy she invited me over, I had never been to a friend's house before, but I thought that she will probably invite the rest of the group as well so I forced myself not to be too excited.

The week ended fast probably because I was anticipating the going to Jess's house thing,

Josh was still acting weird by the way but I managed to evade him every time he came close to me

I was probably just worried Jess will change her mind and uninvite me to her house, I mean by now I could tell that she had a thing for Josh

anyone could tell really, the way she looked at him and how are wanted to be close to him, the all class knew it

it was surday morning the day I was supposed to go to Jess's place when I received a text from Josh.

"hey lily are you busy do you want to hangout maybe, we could go to the park and I could show you around I heard you just moved here a few months ago"

I saw the message but I had no intention of responding to it

I picked out what I was going wear, and around 10, mom came to call me

"lily let's go I need to go to the store to get groceries" I will drop you off at Jessica's house.

"I am coming I just want to grab my bag"

We arrived at Jess' house and mom left, she said she will pick me up at 5 pm

Jess' house was big they lived in one of those high end neighborhoods In town.

I rang the doorbell and waited for a while, a middle aged woman came to open the door

I guess she was the house keeper from the way she was dressed

before I could say hi to her Jess popped out of the kitchen wearing an apron,

"hey lily, you are late" she said

"well I don't remember agreeing on when I should come" I said with a smile

"okay it doesn't matter, its good you are here, now follow me"

she took me to their kitchen and handed me a pink apron,

"wait what's this for" I asked

"we will be baking silly" she answered me while she got muffins from the table and showed me

"I thought we will be studying, you didn't tell me we will be baking"

"do you want to study in an empty stomach, because I can't" she answered smiling

"have you done to this before" Jess asked me

"I used to, with my dad" I answered " he is a chef, on weekends we would have cooking lessons, he would teach me how to cook and bake"

"So you don't do it anymore" she asked

"dad is still back home, he does not stay with us" I answered

I don't like talking about my dad or thinking much about him especially because I don't know if he is ever coming to stay with us again

me and Jess stayed in the kitchen till lunch time, turns out she was still learning how to bake and I was a bit better than her

I ended up teaching her a few things

later we went and did some studying until 4 pm, and honestly I had so much fun, I had not enjoyed myself this much since we stopped staying with dad

"hey lily what are you thinking about you are staring at nothing" Jess asked

"oh it's nothing, I just thought that you will invite the all group to hangout" I said

after all you guys have been friends since baby class" I added

"oh yeah, we are close but I am not included in their weekend plans" she said

"how is that" I asked as I turned to face her

"the twins have music practice"

I wondered then how josh asked me to meet up with him,

"while nana helps babysit her little sister and Abigail stays with her dad, her parents divorced"

My heart skipped a bit hearing the word divorce,

I always knew my parents might have divorced I remember seeing my mom's lawyer at grandma's one evening that was a few weeks after we Left home

but I don't want to accept it

maybe that's why I like Abigail so much compared to the rest of the guys in the group, we both have something in common

"hey lily snap out of it,

oh sorry Jess what did you say

"I was saying that I am usually alone on holidays and weekends because of that.

"I can stay with you on those days if you like, I mean I don't have any friends after all" I told her

and I could see the look of happiness and surprise in her face.

we talked for another hour, laughing and planning how we will be spending our time together
