Chapter Six: The game begins

765 Words
Elise woke to the sound of her phone buzzing incessantly. Groggily, she reached for it on the nightstand, frowning at the unknown number on the screen. “Hello?” she answered hesitantly. “Mrs. Grey,” a deep, menacing voice said, making her sit upright. “A pleasure to finally speak with you.” Her blood ran cold. “Who is this?” “A friend,” the voice replied smoothly. “Or perhaps an enemy. That depends entirely on your husband.” Elise’s heart raced. “If this is some kind of joke—” “Oh, I never joke,” the voice interrupted. “Damian Grey has made many enemies, my dear. But you... you are his Achilles’ heel.” The line went dead, leaving Elise clutching the phone with trembling hands. --- By the time Damian returned home that evening, Elise was pacing the living room, her mind reeling. “What happened?” he asked, his sharp gaze taking in her pale face and restless movements. “Someone called me,” she said, her voice unsteady. “They said... they said I’m your weakness.” Damian’s expression darkened immediately, his posture stiffening. “What else did they say?” “They didn’t give a name,” Elise continued. “But they sounded serious, Damian. Who was it?” “That’s none of your concern,” Damian said firmly, his jaw clenched. “None of my concern?” Elise repeated, anger flaring. “They called me! They’re threatening me! How is that not my concern?” Damian stepped closer, his eyes cold and hard. “You don’t understand the world I operate in, Elise. People like him thrive on fear. If you show weakness, they’ll exploit it.” “I’m not weak,” she said, her voice trembling with defiance. His lips quirked into a faint, humorless smile. “No, you’re not. But you’re also not prepared for this.” “Then prepare me,” she challenged. For a moment, Damian said nothing, his gaze searching hers. Then he sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’ll handle it,” he said finally. “But from now on, you don’t answer unknown calls. You don’t go anywhere without telling me. Do you understand?” Elise nodded, though her frustration remained. She hated feeling like a pawn in a game she didn’t understand. --- Later that night, Elise found herself standing in the penthouse kitchen, staring blankly at a cup of tea she’d made but hadn’t touched. “Can’t sleep?” She turned to see Damian leaning against the doorway, his tie loosened and his expression softer than usual. “No,” she admitted. He walked over and sat at the counter across from her. “You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for,” he said after a moment. She looked at him, surprised by the unexpected compliment. “Then why do you treat me like I’m fragile?” “Because,” he said, his voice low, “I know what it’s like to lose someone you care about. And I won’t let that happen again.” His words left her stunned, and for the first time, she glimpsed the man beneath the cold, controlled exterior. “Who did you lose?” she asked softly. But Damian’s walls went up again just as quickly as they’d come down. He stood and turned away, his voice curt. “That’s not a story for tonight.” As he walked away, Elise felt a pang of frustration—and something else she couldn’t quite name. --- Across the city, in a darkened warehouse, the man from before stood surrounded by his men, a predatory smile on his face. “Damian Grey thinks he’s untouchable,” he said, holding up a photograph of Elise. “Let’s see how untouchable he feels when we strike where it hurts the most.” One of his men stepped forward. “What’s the plan?” The man’s smile widened. “We remind him that no one is invincible. And we start with his lovely wife.” As the men laughed darkly, the man lit a cigarette, the glow briefly illuminating his cruel features. “Let the games begin,” he murmured. --- Back at the penthouse, Elise lay awake, her mind racing with questions. Who was this mysterious enemy? What had Damian done to provoke him? And how long could she stay safe in a world full of shadows and secrets? Little did she know, the answers were closer—and more dangerous—than she could have ever imagined.
