Chapter Seven : The first move

951 Words
The next morning, Elise found herself more alert than ever. The previous night's conversation with Damian had left a lingering sense of unease, and the mysterious phone call continued to echo in her mind. She tried to shake it off, but the weight of Damian’s words—"I’ll handle it"—only deepened her sense of helplessness. As she moved about the penthouse, preparing for the day, Elise tried to force herself into a sense of normalcy. The world outside her bubble seemed distant and unreal, but she knew things were changing. Whatever Damian was hiding, it was only a matter of time before it would all come to light. Her phone buzzed, pulling her from her thoughts. A text message from Vanessa flashed on the screen: "Elise, we need to talk. Something’s going on. Meet me at the café later." With a sigh of relief, Elise quickly replied. "I’ll be there." --- The café was tucked away on a quiet street, a place that Elise and Vanessa used to visit when they wanted to escape the chaos of their lives. It was the kind of place where nothing seemed out of place, and the noise of the outside world couldn’t reach them. When Elise arrived, she spotted Vanessa sitting at a corner table, her eyes scanning the crowd. There was an urgency to her posture, a tension in the way she moved, that made Elise’s stomach twist. "Vanessa?" Elise asked, sliding into the seat across from her. Vanessa didn’t hesitate. "It’s bad, Elise. Really bad." Elise’s breath caught in her throat. "What is it?" "I found something," Vanessa said, leaning in closer. "Something that ties Damian to... someone dangerous. Someone who’s been after him for years." Elise’s heart skipped a beat. "Who?" Vanessa hesitated, her eyes darting around the café before she spoke in a whisper. "Lorenzo DeMarco." The name hit Elise like a physical blow. Lorenzo DeMarco was a name that had been whispered in the underworld for years. A ruthless businessman with connections to organized crime, DeMarco was known for his brutality and cunning. "Damian’s been involved with him?" Elise asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Vanessa nodded grimly. "I don’t have all the details, but I found records that show Damian’s been doing business with DeMarco for years—under the table, of course. And it’s not just business. There are... other dealings. Illegal ones." Elise stared at her friend in disbelief. "Are you saying that Damian is involved with a criminal syndicate?" Vanessa’s gaze was steady. "That’s exactly what I’m saying." A cold chill ran through Elise. She had known there were secrets, but this... this was beyond anything she had imagined. "What does DeMarco want with Damian?" Elise asked, her voice shaky. Vanessa hesitated before answering. "It’s not just Damian. It’s you. You’re the target, Elise." The words hit Elise like a punch to the gut. "Me?" "Yes. DeMarco knows how much Damian cares about you. He’s going to use you to get to him. And he’s going to make sure you feel it." Elise felt her world start to spin. She had no idea how deep she was in. She thought she was just marrying a man with power, with influence—a man who could offer her security. But this was something entirely different. "Damian hasn’t told you any of this, has he?" Vanessa asked softly. "No," Elise replied, her voice trembling. "But I need to know the truth. I need to know everything." Vanessa reached across the table, placing a reassuring hand on Elise’s. "You have to be careful. Damian may love you, but if it comes down to you or his business, Elise... I’m not sure where his loyalties will lie." --- Elise returned to the penthouse in a daze, the weight of Vanessa’s words bearing down on her like a crushing force. She tried to focus, tried to make sense of everything, but her mind kept returning to one simple question: Why hadn’t Damian told her? She found him in the study, the same room where she had seen him earlier. He was leaning over a stack of papers, his brow furrowed in concentration. "Damian," she said, her voice firm, but her heart racing. He looked up, his expression unreadable. "What is it?" "I need to know the truth," Elise said, her voice steady despite the chaos swirling in her chest. "About Lorenzo DeMarco. About everything." For the first time, she saw something flicker in his eyes—something almost like guilt, but it was gone before she could fully grasp it. "You’ve been asking questions, haven’t you?" he said, his tone darkening. "Vanessa told me everything," she said, stepping closer. "You’ve been involved with DeMarco, Damian. For years." Damian’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t deny it. "Why didn’t you tell me?" Elise demanded, her voice breaking. "Why didn’t you warn me?" He pushed his chair back and stood, his gaze unwavering. "Because I was trying to protect you." "Protect me?" Elise echoed. "By keeping secrets? By dragging me into this world?" His voice grew colder, more controlled. "I did what I had to do to keep you safe, Elise. If I told you everything, it would have put us both in danger." She shook her head, her hands trembling. "I don’t know who you are anymore, Damian." He stepped forward, his gaze intense. "You know exactly who I am, Elise. I’m the man who will do whatever it takes to keep you alive." But Elise couldn’t shake the feeling that the man in front of her wasn’t just protecting her. He was hiding something, and whatever it was, it was far more dangerous than she could ever imagine.
