ALEX. I hadn’t meant to wander that far. The hallway was quiet, too quiet, and I only stopped because I heard the strange again—a low, sharp, groan, like someone sucking air through their teeth. At first, I thought it was pain. Or crying. “Hello?” I called softly. I got no answer. The sound came again, closer this time. My heart began to beat faster, but curiosity pushed me forward. I took one careful step, then another, until I reached the door at the end of the hall. The door I got to was slightly open, so I pushed it gently. What I saw made my blood turn cold. The man stood near the small table by the window, his back to me. His hands were shaking as he held something sharp and small. I watched, frozen, as he pressed it against his arm as he injected himself. My mouth went dry.
