ALEX. Derek arrived just as the sun dipped lower in the sky, the street washed in soft orange light. When I stepped outside and saw him leaning against the car, I felt my heart tighten and loosen at the same time. “Hey,” he said gently, opening his arms. I hesitated for half a second before stepping into the hug. He held me like he used to—firm, familiar and almost comforting. His hand rubbed slow circles on my back, and for a moment, I let myself breathe. “You’re shaking,” he murmured. “It’s okay. I’ve got you now.” Those words landed softly and yet dangerously in my mind. I nodded against his chest even though something inside me whispered caution. We got into the car, and as he drove, he kept glancing at me like he was making sure I hadn’t disappeared. “You look tired,” he said.
