I was still frozen when the stranger stood up.
“I’m sorry,” he said quickly, his voice rushed, almost panicked. “I really am. I don’t know why I did that. I wasn’t thinking.”
I blinked at him, my lips still warm from the kiss I hadn’t asked for. My heart raced wildly.
“I—” I started, but he didn’t let me finish.
“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable,” he added, already stepping back. “It won’t happen again.”
He grabbed his jacket and retreated towards the door, making sure to avoid my eyes. “I shouldn’t have crossed that line. I’m really sorry.”
Before I could even find my voice—before I could ask his name, or why he looked just as shaken as I felt—he turned and walked away, fast, like he was afraid I would stop him.
The door closed behind him, and the room fell quiet.
