CHAPTER 22 - BLOOD DEBT - CASIDY'S POV

2013 Words
I lay in bed, the soft light of the moon creeping through the curtains. My twin was breathing softly next to me, as we cuddled up together. It felt safe, familiar. But then things changed and I started feeling restless. My dreams twisted into something dark and heavy. I could feel the weight of my nightmare pressing down, but I knew well, even asleep, that this wasn't a normal dream. It was a vision. In my vision, I saw Aiden. He lay, fast asleep in his grand chamber, unaware of the danger lurking nearby. Shadows danced around him, and a figure emerged, an iron-encrusted dagger glinting in the dim light. Panic surged through me, and my heard began racing. I saw the dagger rise into the air, and come down several times into Aidens chest. I screamed, jolting awake. My heart raced as my eyes darted around the room. Ava stirred beside me, her brow furrowing in confusion. ''What's wrong?!'' Ava shouted, as she sat up and grabbed my arm, while I screamed and cried. ''Did you see something?'' I didn’t have time to explain. I leaped from the bed, bare feet hitting the cold floor. The urgency to save my mate pulsed in my veins. I rushed out of our room, my mind screaming for clarity. ''GUARDS!'' I screamed as I burst out of the main door of our suite, ''GUARDS! THE KINGS IN DANGER!'' ''Luna, calm down, what are you talking about?'' Heath, one of the guards, rushed over. ''JUST SHIFT AND TAKE ME TO THE KINGS WING!'' ''Luna, please calm down,'' He said as Ava came running out. ''SHIFT THAT'S A F*CKING ORDER!'' Heath looked frantic, but stepped away from me, and shifted. I didn't even wait before I was climbing onto his back. ''GO!'' ''CASEY WAIT!'' Ava shouted, but I ignored her, and we took the sky. ''TELL THE GUARDS TO GO TO THE KING!'' I shouted over the sound of the wind that caused my hair to flow around me. We were already flying lower but the time I'd given the order. I'd get to Aiden before them. We landed on his balcony, and I jumped down, hurting my ankle in the process. When I'd misjudged the height, whenever I rode Aiden, he'd lower himself for me and Ava to climb off, but Heath hadn't gotten the chance before I'd jumped off. I ran to the balcony doors and threw up my hands. The power of the wind smashed the doors open and for the first time in my life, I stepped foot into my mate's bedroom. I screamed and threw up my hands again, when I saw a man near Aidens bed, as he woke up from all the noise I was causing. His eyes fluttered open, and confusion clouded his face. ''Casidy!?'' Aiden shouted, as he jumped out of bed. ''What are you?'' ''BEHIND YOU!'' I screamed, cutting him off. Mid-sentence, my whole body was shaking, as more guards burst into his bedroom, looking around for the threat. Aiden spun, still looking confused, and saw the man, who was getting up, and scrambling for his dagger. Aiden pointed at me as he ran over to the man, ''TURN AROUND!'' I turned, but not quickly enough, and saw Aiden shift his hand, bringing forth his talons as they came down over the man's face and down his chest. He gave a pained grunt, before there was a thud as he hit to floor. ''HOW DID HE GET INTO MY SUITE?!'' Aiden screamed, ''GET HIS BODY OUT OF HERE! AND SEARCH THE CASTLE FOR ANYONE ELSE'' ''Yes your majesty.'' One of the guards answered. ''One of you contact Ryker and tell him what happened. I want him leading the search. I will join him shortly.'' ''Yes, sir.'' I'd done it, I'd saved him. I've avoided the vision. My mind was telling me this, but my body hadn't caught up yet. I was still seeing images of the vision where he'd been killed, and my legs were shaking terribly. I collapsed on the ground, my heart beating out of my chest. ''CASEY!'' Aiden rushed over to me, knelt down and hugged me, while I cried into his chest, ''It's okay, I'm safe. Please calm down, just take deep breaths.'' ''Did he hurt you?'' I asked, leaning back, but still crying. Aiden touched my face, ''I'm fine, how did you know I was in danger? Did you have a vision?'' I nodded and sniffed, ''I saw you die.'' Aiden's face softened, and he pulled me back into his arms, ''Thank you, you saved my life. I owe you a blood debt.'' I shook my head against his shoulder, ''No you don't. I..'' ''Yes I do.'' Aiden argued, as he lifted me from the cold stone floor, and placed me on his bed. I looked over at the spot the man had been, and saw a pool of blood, ''Don't look,'' Aiden gently pulled my face into another direction, ''Stay focused on me.'' I watched as he pulled his robe off a chair near the bed and he placed it over me. ''You're freezing,'' He said as he covered me and started rubbing my arms, ''This certainly isn't how I wanted you in my room for the first time,'' He tried to joke, but I glared at him. ''Don't joke right now.'' I ordered. ''I'm sorry,'' He kissed my forehead, before leaning back, extending a talon again. ''What are you doing?'' ''I owe you a blood debt,'' He said as he cut his finger, ''Give me your hand.'' ''You don't have to, we're mates, you'd have saved me too if you'd had that vision.'' I tried again, but he took my hand, cut my finger and pressed his onto mine, joining our blood. Aiden smiled at me, ''Now I owe you my life,'' He told me, ''Great way to start a relationship,'' He joked again, ''Now anytime you want to win a fight, you can call on this, and I'll have to give in.'' I smiled for the first time, ''You're an id*ot.'' I wiped the tears from my cheeks. ''As if I'd waste this to win an argument. Who do you think tried to hurt you?'' ''My moonlight, I'm three hundred years old,'' He told me, ''Anyone could hold a grudge against me. This isn't the first time I've had an attempt on my life, and it won't be the last.'' ''Then I'll keep watch and make sure you're safe.'' Aiden kissed me gently on the lips, ''Then I'm a very lucky man.'' He told me, as his eyes ran over my body, and I remembered I was just wearing a silk slip, ''How did you get to my balcony?'' ''Oh, Heath!'' I gasped as I shakily got up and rushed back to the balcony, ''I'm sorry, he's safe, please go back to your post.'' The gray Dragon bowed his head, and looked at Aiden who'd followed me, before he flew back to my wing. ''I should go back, Ava and probably Nanny by now, must be freaking out.'' I told Aiden. ''I'll walk you back.'' He told me, as he reached over and tied off his robe, so I was better covered, before he went into an adjacent room, which I guessed was his walk-in, because he came out wearing another royal blue robe, and slippers in his hands. ''These will be too big, but they'll keep you warm until you get back to your room.'' He knelt before me, ran his finger up the inside of the robe, which caused excited goosebumps to erupt over my skin, and lifted my leg so he could place my foot into the slippers. Once I was in his oversized clothes, he turned, so his back was to me. ''Climb on.'' ''What?'' I blushed, ''But... someone will see.'' ''I don't care, you won't be able to walk in those slippers, so I'll carry you.'' He told me, ''I only put them on you, so your feet would be warm.'' I nodded and wrapped my arms around his neck, while he moved his arms around me, and lifted me onto his back, before standing up. We walked passed the guards by the entrance to Aiden's wing, and I hid my face against his neck, but I felt Aiden shiver, and realized I was breathing on his marking spot. ''Sorry,'' I whispered shyly. ''Don't be,'' He responded and continued to walk. The castle halls felt like a labyrinth, if you didn't know the way, you'd end up at a dead end, but Aiden wasn't even paying attention as he walked and suddenly we were going through the courtyard. ''You do realise you flew, right?'' Aiden commented. ''I know,'' I smiled, as I leaned my head on his shoulder, ''I didn't even think, I just knew I had to get to you. I may have... ordered Heath. I knew technically I'm not Queen yet, so I can't order the Thunder, but I just reacted.'' ''It's okay,'' He shrugged, ''I think saving my life, gives you a little leeway to abuse your station. Besides, you'll be Queen shortly, so it won't matter.'' I exhaled in relief and closed my eyes, but I saw images of him dying again, ''I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't made it in time.'' ''You did,'' He reminded me, ''Please don't dwell on what could have been.'' I nodded and snuggled closer to him. When we made it back to my wing, Ava was pacing around, arguing with Nanny to let her go see what was going on, but when she saw us, her eyes widened and she rushed over, hugging us. ''WHAT'S GOING ON!?'' Ava half screamed, half cried against his chest. ''Averly, let the King breathe, so he can tell you.'' Nanny gently pulled her back, while her mate watched on, looking worried. I slipped off his back, still shaking a little, so Aiden sat me down by the fire, and explained what had happened. ''Goddess!'' Nanny gasped, as she pressed her hands to her mouth, ''And you saved him?'' I nodded, and Aiden smiled at me, ''My hero.'' He touched my cheek, and I blushed. ''WHAT THE HELL WHERE YOU THINKING?!'' Ava shoved me, and I stared at her in shock. ''Ava!'' Aiden scolded her, but she came closer to me. ''HE HAS GUARDS FOR A REASON. YOU SHOULD HAVE CONTACTED THEM,'' She screamed, ''YOU DON'T JUST RUN STRAIGHT TO A KILLER!'' I quickly got up and pulled her into my arms as she began to cry, and Aiden hugged us both. ''It's alright Ava, she was safe, I promise,'' He told her. ''I could have lost you both,'' She wept. ''It's okay, we're both fine,'' I assured her. ''You promised you'd never leave me,'' She reminded me, ''Don't EVER do that again. Leave the guards to handle it.'' ''I will. I promise,'' I lied and kissed her cheek. ''It's very late,'' Nanny pointed out, ''You girls need to get some rest, and I'm sure the King needs to handle this horrific situation. Come back to bed and warm up.'' ''I'll take them,'' Aiden told her, ''You both go back to bed.'' Nanny reached over and touched me arm, ''Goodnight, you foolish, brave girl.'' She smiled and walked off. ''Goodnight,'' Nanny's husband smiled at us before he followed his mate. Aiden took us back to bed, and I climbed in, still wearing his robe, and Ava joined me. ''I'll have the city under lockdown until we can properly search,'' Aiden said as he sat beside Ava, ''So I want you both to stay in your wing tomorrow.'' ''But we were moving into your wing.'' Ava reminded him. ''Not anymore, you're not,'' He shook his head, ''I need to make sure it's safe first, you can move in a day or two.'' Ava sighed, ''Fine,'' ''Get some rest,'' Aiden leaned over and kissed us both, ''I love you.'' ''Love you too,'' Ava said back. ''Me too,'' I told him, as he got up and left.
