I couldn’t sleep. My mind raced with thoughts that wouldn’t quiet down. I hadn't stopped worrying since Ava rushed out of training today. I hated that she was suffering so much. I hated that one of us would die because she wasn't strong enough. I'd never blame her if it was me, but I didn't want her to blame herself for the rest of her life if I was the one who'd died.
Like always when I was anxious, the castle walls felt like a prison, and I longed for freedom, so I slipped out of my bed, where Ava was curled up against me, and pulled on my robe, before tiptoed over to the window, pushed it open and climbed out onto the roof, a place that had become my refuge, though when I'd mentioned this to Aiden a few years ago, he scolded me and banned me from the roof, but I still snuck out.
The cold roof beneath my feet sent shivers up my spine, but I ignored it, and sat down. The stars above sparkled like diamonds scattered across velvet sky. I perched on the edge, gazing at the vastness of the night sky, while the wind danced playfully around me, making me envious, as it often did. The wind got to go anywhere, and everywhere, and I was trapped here.
While I watched the stars, I heard a sound that made my heart race. A deep thud echoed across the roof. I turned quickly, thinking one of my guards had spotted me. Great, they'd dob me into the King, but it wasn't a Dragon I knew.
I stared with eyes wide, as the large Dragon dropped something from his mouth. Its scales shimmered under the moonlight, a magnificent sight. I felt both fear and awe. Who was this?
As his body shook, I realized he was shifting back, and I quickly looked away. What fool would dare to shift in front of me? If my mate found out, he'd be dead.
When I heard footsteps, I peeked up nervously and saw he was wearing pants, and I froze. It was the man from my vision. The one I'd warned Aiden about. It was Noland, his brother. What was he doing back in the thunder?
I had often heard tales of his adventures beyond the castle walls, tales that filled me with both admiration and longing. Prince Noland had traveled to distant lands, tasted freedom, and faced danger, but I remember Aiden telling me that he was meant to be in the witch realm.
''Prince Nolan!?'' I called out, my voice barely a whisper against the night. He froze, surprise flashing across his face. His eyes met mine, and for a moment.
''You know who I am?''
I nodded, as he sat beside me ''I'm Casidy, one of your brothers.''
''Mates,'' He ended the sentence, ''I know. Your red hair gives you away. It's why I decided to stop and speak to you. What are you doing up here?'' He asked.
''I couldn’t sleep,'' I admitted. As I looked him over. He seemed fine. Why did I have a vision making me feel as if he couldn't be trusted? '''And wanted to escape the castle, even if just for a moment.''
Nolan’s expression softened. ''You don’t have to stay here trapped forever. There’s a world out there waiting for you.''
I laughed, and rolled my eyes, ''It'll have to keep waiting then,'' I pulled up my knees and hugged them, ''I'll never get to see it.''
''Don't be so pessimistic,'' He leaned back on his elbows, and I avoided looking at his bare chest, ''I'm sure after you and your sister save us all, my brother will take you out of the city. You're getting married soon, right? You'll get to go on your wedding tour.''
Did everyone know about this tour? Why was my sister and I the last to know?
''If I live until then.'' I answered, ''Aiden wants to go about the ritual.''
He studied me, ''I see.'' He nodded.
''When did you just get back?''
''Literally a few seconds ago.''
''Does Aiden know?''
''It's so weird hearing you use his name and not his title.'' Nolan smirked, ''And no, he doesn't. Like I said, I only just showed up, and I was heading to his wing in the castle when I saw you. You really shouldn't be out here at your age, it's too cold, you'll bring your core temp down.''
''I will heat up again when I go back inside.'' I told him, slightly annoyed at being scolded.
''Fair enough, little hatchling, freeze if you want, it's not sweat off my wings.'' He shrugged, and I frowned again. He was very different to Aiden, who'd be pushing me back inside.
I glared at him, ''Shouldn't you go see your brother?''
''And leave you all alone on a roof?'' He asked, ''Why would I do that? What if you fell?''
''I'm always up here, I won't fall.''
''Better not risk it, anyway.'' He looked up at the sky, ''You're my future Queen. I can't let you fall off a roof. Though I would prefer to be flying. Have you shifted yet? We can go for a fly.''
''I don't shift for another few months,'' I responded, ''A month before the ritual, so I won't get much flying time anyway, besides. I don't like flying.''
Nolan laughed, ''You're a weird one. No wonder you're mated to my brother.''
''Don't talk about him like that.'' I said angrily, and he laughed again.
''You're adorable, hatchling,'' He said as he looked me over, ''So, why don't you like flying?''
I frowned again, he was so nosy?
''I had a vision where someone dropped me, so I don't fly unless it's with Aiden.''
''Oh, is that all?'' He laughed and jumped up, his dark hair flowing around in the wind from his movements, ''You're a Dragon, you can't be afraid of falling. Let's go.''
''No.'' I snapped, as I stood up, ''I'm going back inside, goodnight, your majesty.''
''Coward, you can't get over your fear until you live it. Falling isn't the end of the world.'' He said as he shifted, ripping his pants in the process.
I gasped and fell back, ''Are you crazy? You could have hurt me!''
Nolan ignored me, he flapped his wings, rose into the air, before he came down and locked his talons around my body, and shot into the sky.
''AHH!'' I screamed and started punching him, and cutting my arms along his talon in the process, ''PUT ME DOWN!''
Then, without warning, the Prince released me. I screamed as I fell. My stomach dropped. I felt weightless, like I was flying but without control.
The Prince dove, and flew beneath me, and I landed hard on his back, cutting my hands on his spikes, and screaming againt, before flew higher again, rolled and dropped me once more.
This was vision. This was exactly what I'd seen when I was younger. Who knew I'd be the one to bring this vision on by mentioning it to the very Dragon who'd dropped me. No wonder I had a second vision where I knew he couldn't be trusted.
Just as I braced for impact on the ground, screaming, and alerting the guards in the area who started running towards us, the Prince grabbed the back of my robe, and caught me again. The sudden jolt of being caught caused all the air to leave my lungs and I gasped in pain.
Nolan rose back into the sky, and placed me on the roof, where I continued to scream and cry.
''CASEY!'' Ava screamed, as she scrambled out onto the roof, while Nolan looked down at me. ''WHO ARE YOU?! GUARDS!''
Ava pulled me into her arms and held me, as the guards landed on the roof, and one of the men shifted, and pulled on pants that he had strapped to his leg.
''Lady Casidy?!'' He shouted, ''I've called the King.'' He said, before turning to Nolan, ''SHIFT, WHO ARE YOU?!''
Nolan shifted, and we looked away, as he walked over to another Dragon, and took the pants from his leg and pulled them on.
''Prince Nolan?'' The guard gasped, as he looked from him to me, ''Why? Why did you try to hurt one of the Celestials?''
''I was just messing around,'' He defended himself as I cried and held my injured arm, ''It's not that deep Casidy, calm down, I was just showing you that falling isn't the end of the world. You didn't have to freak out like that, and now you're hurt because you couldn't relax.''
''DON'T YOU DARE BLAME HER, YOU SAVAGE B*STARD!'' Ava shouted, but he growled at her.
''You're not Queen yet little hatching, watch your tone!'' Nolan warned her, ''I am your Prince!''
''F*CK YOU!'' She screamed as a dark shadow covered the roof, and we looked up to see Aiden.
He landed next to us, and everyone coward. He walked over to us, and breathed his heat over us, before he turned to his brother. He must have linked the guards, because they turned and asked me what had happened.
Through tears, I explained what Nolan had done, and Aiden gave a loud roar, and his brother lowered his body.
''The King wants you to go back inside, and requests that lady Averly heal your arm.'' The guard told us.
''Come on Casey,'' Ava helped me up, but my legs were trembling, so the guard rushed over.
''May I, my lady?'' He asked, and I nodded, so he picked me up, and carried me back to the window, where he placed me down.
''Thank you,'' I sniffed and climbed inside with my sisters help.
The second we were inside, we heard a loud roar, and we turned to see Aiden attack his brother, and they fell from the roof. We heard a loud thud as they landed, and we screamed out Aiden's name in fear, but Nanny rushed in. Someone must have linked her, and she shut the window, and the curtains.
She looked disheveled, her hair in rollers, and her robe half on.
''What's going on?'' She asked, ''Why are you bleeding?''
As Ava healed my arm, I explained what happened, and Nanny looked horrified.
''He dropped you?'' She said, touching her throat in horror.
''I hope Aiden kills him,'' Ava snarled as she looked at me, ''I can't heal you all the way for some reason. It's going to leave a scar, maybe Aiden can fix it.''
''Prince Nolan is from the royal line,'' Nanny told me, ''His claws are as potent as iron to us, but I'm sure the King can help.''
Nanny gave me a tissue so I could wipe my face, before she went over and added more logs to the fire.
''I'll draw you a hot bath to get your temperature back you, you're freezing.'' She told me, ''How many times have we told you not to go out on that damned roof!?''
As nanny walked off, Ava and I rushed back to the window, but we could no longer hear anything, the fight was already over and from this window, we couldn't see anything.
''Come sit by the fire and warm up,'' Ava asked, as she pulled me away from the window.
When we were both seated, Ava hugged me, and pressed her face into my hair, ''When I heard you screaming, I felt like I was dying. Don't ever scare me like this again!''
''Don't worry, I have no intention of ever going back into the sky, so I won't.''
''It'll be different when you have your own wings,'' She pointed out, ''You'll have full control, it'll be okay.''
''Casey, the bath's ready, come here.'' Nanny ordered.
''Shouldn't she wait for Aiden?'' Ava asked.
''He'll be here soon, but you need to get your temperature up, now come here, and stop arguing.''
''Yes, mam,'' I nodded and got up.
