CHAPTER FOUR

ELENA's POV I couldn't believe this was happening. I stood in front of the mirror, eyeing myself with a critical gaze. The soft hum of the hairdryer still lingered in the air, a sign that I’d just finished getting myself together. But no matter how much I’d tried to prepare for this moment, I couldn’t shake the feeling of disbelief. I was actually getting ready for a date with Lucas. I walked back and forth in my room, trying to suppress the growing nerves I didn’t want to admit were there. Come on, Elena, you’re better than this, I thought to myself. You’ve done this a thousand times. This is just another game, another challenge. Lucas thinks he can win me over, but he’s dead wrong. This is just another chance for me to show him who’s really in control. I ran my fingers through my hair, checking the way it cascaded down my shoulders. I had chosen something simple but chic—a black dress that clung to my curves in all the right places. I wasn’t about to make it obvious, but I knew I looked good. It wasn’t that I was trying to impress him, but let’s be real, I always looked good. And if Lucas thought he could just pull me into his world without a fight, he was in for a shock. As I stood there, still contemplating whether I should really go through with it, I realized that maybe there was a part of me—just a tiny part—that was curious about what would happen. No. No way. I’m not letting him win, I reminded myself. This is just a date. Nothing more. The doorbell rang, and my heart skipped a beat. I couldn’t believe it. My stomach did a little flip as I glanced at the clock. It was time. I had to do this. This was it. I walked out of my room, my shoes clicking softly against the floor with every step. When I reached the front door, I took a deep breath and opened it to find Lucas standing there with that infuriatingly charming smile on his face. “Hey, Elena" Lucas said, his voice smooth and teasing as he stepped forward, his gaze quickly assessing me. “You look… well, you look incredible.” I rolled my eyes at his obvious attempt at flattery. “Thanks, but you’re wasting your time. Let’s just go. We’re not doing anything fancy, right? I’m not interested in all that romantic nonsense.” He chuckled and leaned casually against the doorframe, clearly unfazed by my response. “Oh, I know. You’re not the type to fall for that stuff. But trust me, I think you’re going to enjoy the evening. You might even surprise yourself.” I crossed my arms over my chest, giving him my best unimpressed look. “Surprise myself? Please. I’m not interested in being swept off my feet or whatever you’re planning.” Lucas gave me a knowing look, as if he was already two steps ahead of me. “I’m sure. But I’ll tell you one thing—you’re going to have a good time. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll realize you’re not as immune to me as you think.” I wanted to snap at him, tell him that he wasn’t the first guy to think he could win me over, but instead, I just kept my cool. I wasn’t about to let him see how much his words affected me. “Yeah, we’ll see about that” I said, walking past him to the car. Flashback—A Few Days Ago It had started out like any other day, but somehow, Lucas had found a way to corner me. I was heading to my car, planning to head home and forget about everything. But then I saw him leaning against the wall near the parking lot, watching me with that irritating smirk on his face. What now? I groaned internally. I walked over, trying to ignore the feeling that something was off. “What’s up, Lucas? Can’t you see I’m busy?” I said, doing my best to sound uninterested. I wasn’t in the mood for his usual teasing. He straightened up and moved into my path, blocking my way. “Oh, I know you’re busy. Busy avoiding me,” he said with a grin. “I’ve been trying to get your attention for weeks, and you’re still acting like you don’t even care. But I’m not going to let you keep ignoring me.” I arched an eyebrow, trying to stay composed. “Oh? And why’s that? You think I’m just gonna fall for whatever you’re trying to sell? Nice try, Lucas.” He laughed, his confidence only making me want to roll my eyes. “You’ve got it all wrong. I’m not selling anything. I’m just trying to get you to see that I’m not like the other guys. So what do you say? One date. That’s all I’m asking.” “A date?” I scoffed. “Please, I’m not some girl who’s going to fall for your stupid charm. You’re wasting your time.” But Lucas wasn’t backing down. He leaned in a little closer, his gaze unwavering as he challenged me. “You’re afraid, aren’t you? You’re scared that I might actually make you have fun. That I might actually show you a good time. But I’m not worried. You’ll accept.” I felt my heart beat a little faster at the way he was looking at me. I hated that he had this effect on me. But no, I wasn’t going to let him win. “Scared? Of you? Hilarious. I’m not scared, Lucas. I just don’t want anything to do with your games.” He smirked, his voice dropping lower. “You don’t have to be scared to be interested. You just have to admit that you can’t resist me. I’m not some guy you can ignore forever. So why don’t you stop pretending and accept? One date, Elena. That’s all I’m asking.” I crossed my arms over my chest and tilted my head, acting like I wasn’t affected. “Fine. I’ll accept. But don’t think for a second that you’re winning me over. You won’t. This is just a date, Lucas. Nothing more.” His grin widened, like he’d just won the lottery. “That’s the spirit. You’ll see.” --- Now, here I was, walking alongside him, still pretending that I wasn’t at least a little curious about where this night would lead. I wasn’t the type to get easily swept away, but something about this whole situation felt... different. Was I falling for his confidence? For his cocky attitude that made him think he could get anything? No, Elena. Don’t let him get to you. You’re in control. Remember that, I reminded myself. “So, what’s this date really about?” I asked, trying to sound indifferent as we approached the car. “It better not be something cheesy like a dinner and movie. I’m not here for that.” Lucas opened the car door for me, his expression unreadable. “Don’t worry. It’s not that cliché. Just trust me. You’re going to have fun.” I raised an eyebrow as I slid into the seat. “I doubt that. But fine, lead the way.” As he drove off, I couldn’t help but wonder what he had planned. One thing was for sure—this night would definitely be interesting.
