CHAPTER TWO

ELENA's POV So, the school fair’s about to end, and honestly, I couldn’t be happier. I was just about to head home, grab my phone, and relax. No more pretending to be interested in booths I don’t care about or those random games people think are fun. I was just walking by the exit when—of course—someone had to stop me. It was him. Lucas. The guy I had absolutely zero interest in. Well, at least that’s what I was telling myself. He was leaning against a booth, acting like he owned the place, with that smug grin of his. He looked so annoyingly... perfect. Ugh. I seriously hate how effortless it seems for him to look so put-together. “Hey, Elena,” Lucas greeted me, his voice like he was doing me a favor by speaking to me. I paused in my tracks, dramatically rolling my eyes. "Oh. You." I crossed my arms, already feeling irritated. “What now, Lucas? Are you here to make my day worse?” He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Worse? Come on, you don’t mean that. I’m just here to chat.” He pushed himself off the booth and started walking closer to me. It’s like he was trying to make it seem casual, but I knew better. This was just another game for him. “Chat?” I scoffed. “Don’t tell me you want to be friends now. Please. I’m too busy for that kind of nonsense.” Lucas chuckled, completely unfazed. “Oh no, no. I’m not here to be your friend. Just wanted to talk. Heard you’re a bit... challenging.” I blinked. “Excuse me?” I gave him my best are you for real look. “What exactly do you mean by that?” He leaned in, like he was about to share a secret. “Well, you’re the one girl I haven’t been able to get, so I’m thinking... maybe you’re a challenge I’m up for.” He smiled smugly, like he knew something I didn’t. “And I love a good challenge.” I couldn't help it—I burst out laughing. “A challenge? You?” I placed a hand on my hip and looked at him like he was the most ridiculous thing I’d ever seen. “Lucas, you think you’re the first guy to try and make me fall for you? Honey, please. I could have anyone I want. And you’re really not it." He looked unfazed, as though my words didn’t even make a dent in his confidence. He just shrugged. “Well, that’s what I’m here to change. You won’t know unless you try, right?” I shook my head, trying to keep a straight face but failing. “Try? You’re really going to try? What makes you think you have a chance?” Lucas raised an eyebrow, clearly not backing down. “I’ve done it before. Why do you think you’re any different?” At that moment, I felt my usual smugness start to waver. No one ever challenged me like this, and for a split second, I wondered if maybe... just maybe... he could actually pull it off. But no, no, no. I wasn’t going to fall for that trap. Not now, not ever. “Please". I said, trying to hold back my smile. “You’re not going to pull anything on me. If anything, I’m the one who’s in control here. You’re just wasting your time.” Lucas looked at me, a spark of amusement in his eyes. “Well, we’ll see about that. The offer’s on the table if you ever want to take me up on it.” I rolled my eyes dramatically, flicking my hair over my shoulder. “Yeah, I’ll think about it. But don’t hold your breath, okay?” He just smirked, unfazed by my attitude. “I’ll be waiting.” With that, Lucas turned and walked off, leaving me standing there feeling a little... off. I mean, I had made it clear he didn’t stand a chance, right? Right. Then why did I feel like I had just been caught in his game? I let out a sigh and shook my head. This is ridiculous, Elena. You’re not about to let some guy like Lucas mess with you. Just as I was about to leave, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Mara. Mara's messaged: “Oh my God, I saw what happened with Lucas. Are you gonna let him do it?” I rolled my eyes, typing a quick reply. Elena's reply:“Please. He’s just another guy. I already told him he doesn’t stand a chance.” But then... what if he could? I shook the thought away. No way. I wasn’t about to fall for his cocky charm. Still, a part of me couldn’t help but wonder. I didn’t need a guy to complete me, but there was something about this whole thing that was... interesting. Mara had been pushing me to take him up on the challenge, but was I really going to let Lucas think he could win? Could he actually get me to fall for him? I shook my head again. No way. But maybe—just maybe—I should take up the challenge. I wasn’t scared of a little competition, after all. Maybe it would be fun to mess with him a little. I typed back to Mara, not too sure what I was even doing: “I’ll think about it.” --- When I met Mara later, she was practically bouncing with excitement. “You have to take the challenge, Elena. I mean, come on, he’s been toying with every girl here. You’re the only one who’s been immune to him. Don’t you think that’s kind of... hot?” I crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow. “Hot? More like annoying.” But there was a part of me that was starting to feel that competitive itch. Lucas thought he could get anyone he wanted? Maybe it was time I showed him how wrong he was. No one messes with Elena, not even Lucas. “You think so?” Mara teased. “But deep down, you’re curious, aren’t you?” I pursed my lips, pretending to be deep in thought. “Fine” I said with a dramatic sigh. “I’ll do it. I’ll show him who’s in charge.” Mara gasped. “Oh my God, you’re going to do it? I can’t believe it! This is going to be so much fun!” I smirked, already feeling the excitement of the challenge. “Yeah. Let’s see if he can actually pull it off.” --- As the school fair came to a close, I walked away with a new goal in mind. Lucas had no idea what he was in for. This wasn’t just about proving a point. This was about showing him that no guy, not even someone as cocky as Lucas, could ever get the best of me. And when I finally showed him, it was going to be epic ---
