Chapter Four First Morning

Elara arrived at seven fifteen. She had told herself six forty-five and then stood in her apartment on the Upper West Side at six thirty with her coat on and her bag on her shoulder and the particular feeling of a person who is ready to leave but is not ready to arrive, and so she had taken her coat off again and made coffee she didn't drink and put her coat back on and left at seven, which split the difference between early and late and satisfied nobody including herself. The Cole townhouse on the Upper East Side looked different in the morning. She had seen it first in the grey-gold light of late afternoon, arriving in Daniel's car with the weight of an argument still sitting between them. It had looked elegant then, composed, the kind of house that kept its private life private. In the early morning it looked — softer, somehow. The pale stone caught the thin spring light at a different angle. A pigeon was conducting a thorough inspection of the front step. In the upstairs window, she could see the warm glow of a lamp already lit behind curtains that were slightly too cheerful for the rest of the house's aesthetic — yellow, with small white stars. Damien's room, she understood without needing to be told. She rang the bell. The door was opened not by Daniel but by a woman in her early sixties with the build and bearing of someone who had spent decades being the most competent person in any given room and had long since stopped feeling the need to announce it. She had warm brown skin, silver-streaked hair pulled back with brisk efficiency, and eyes that conducted a thorough and not unkind assessment of Elara in approximately three seconds. "Miss Bennett." Her voice was measured and warm in equal parts. "I'm Ruth Hartley. Come in, please." "Mrs. Hartley." Elara stepped inside. "Thank you." "He's been up since six," Ruth said, closing the door and moving toward the kitchen with the purposeful stride of a woman in the middle of several things simultaneously. "Which is thirty minutes earlier than usual, so make of that what you will." Elara followed her down the hallway, past the photographs she had deliberately not looked at on her previous visit. This morning she allowed herself one glance — a series of framed prints, some black and white, some color, arranged with the slight imperfection of something hung with love rather than precision. A younger Daniel, recognizably himself but lighter somehow, laughing at something off-camera with his whole face in a way she had never seen him laugh. A woman — dark-haired, beautiful, with a smile that took up considerable real estate — holding a newborn with the stunned, luminous expression of someone who had just encountered something too large for their existing vocabulary. Monica. Elara looked away and kept walking. The kitchen was at the back of the house and it was, she discovered, where all the warmth the rest of the building kept in careful reserve had decided to concentrate itself. It was a large, well-appointed kitchen — the kind with good countertops and a serious range and herbs growing in small pots on the windowsill — but what made it warm was not the fittings. It was the evidence of a child. A drawing stuck to the fridge with a magnet shaped like the Statue of Liberty. A small step stool positioned at the sink, slightly askew. A collection of plastic dinosaurs arranged along the windowsill with what appeared to be considerable intentionality, presiding over the herbs like a tiny Jurassic committee. And at the kitchen table, in pajamas printed with rockets, his dark hair enthusiastically defying any evidence of a recent comb — Damien. He was eating toast with the focused, methodical energy of a child who has strong opinions about toast and is currently verifying that this particular slice meets his standards. He looked up when Elara appeared in the kitchen doorway and the change in his face was so immediate and so total that it was almost difficult to look at directly — the way the sun is sometimes difficult to look at directly. "Mummy!" He said it the way he said everything — with absolute certainty, no question mark, no hesitation. A statement of fact about the universe. "Good morning, Damien," Elara said. She had decided, in the thinking she had done the night before lying awake in her apartment, that she would not correct the word. Not yet. A child psychologist she had looked up at eleven thirty PM — because she was Elara Bennett and she prepared for things — had written that correcting a grieving child's transference language abruptly could cause withdrawal. She had filed this away. She would navigate the word carefully, in time, with patience. For now she crossed the kitchen and sat in the chair beside him and looked at his toast. "Is it good?" she asked. He considered the toast with appropriate gravity. "Ruth puts too much butter," he said. "Daddy puts the right amount." "I'll bear that in mind," Ruth said from the counter, entirely unruffled, in the tone of a woman who had been receiving Damien's culinary critiques for some time and had achieved a state of perfect equanimity about them. Elara felt something ease slightly in her chest. She had not been certain, before this moment, what the morning would feel like. Whether it would feel like an obligation or an intrusion or some complicated combination of both. She had not expected it to feel — ordinary. Small. The particular smallness of a child eating toast and a woman pouring coffee and morning light coming through a kitchen window onto a row of plastic dinosaurs. She was still deciding how she felt about that when she heard him. Footsteps on the stairs — not hurried, but purposeful. The particular rhythm of a man who moved through his own house with the same contained efficiency he brought to everything else. Daniel appeared in the kitchen doorway. He was in work clothes — a charcoal suit, this one with the tie properly done, which Elara noted as a data point and then firmly stopped noting. He had clearly been up for some time. He was composed in the way he was always composed, that careful, architectural composure, but his eyes when they moved to Damien had that other quality — the unguarded one, the one she had seen in the sitting room when the front door had opened and his son had come home. Then his eyes moved to her. "Miss Bennett," he said. "You're on time." "I'm always on time," she said. Something moved at the corner of his mouth. "Coffee?" "Mrs. Hartley already —" "I'll do it," he said, moving to the counter in a way that was apparently not a discussion. Elara watched him pour coffee with the mild bewilderment of a woman who had spent two weeks being blacklisted by this man and was now sitting in his kitchen at seven fifteen in the morning while he made her coffee. Life, she reflected, had a very particular sense of humor. "Daddy," Damien said. "Yeah, bud." "Mummy came." Daniel set the coffee mug down in front of Elara without quite meeting her eyes. "I see that," he said. "I told her about the butter." "Did you." "Ruth puts too much." "I know, bud." "You put the right amount." "Thank you, Damien." "Mummy should know the right amount," Damien said, with the tone of a four year old issuing what he considered to be a perfectly reasonable practical suggestion. "So she can do it too." The kitchen was quiet for a moment. Ruth made a small sound near the stove that might have been a cough. Elara picked up her coffee mug and looked at Damien very seriously. "I will personally study the butter situation," she said. "And report back." Damien nodded, satisfied. He returned to his toast. Daniel sat down at the head of the table with his own coffee and his phone and the day's schedule, and for a few minutes the kitchen existed in the kind of quiet that is not uncomfortable but is very aware of itself — the careful quiet of people who are new to sharing a space and are still learning the edges of it. Elara drank her coffee. It was, she noticed despite herself, very good. "His schedule today," Daniel said, without looking up from his phone. "Mrs. Hartley will manage the afternoon. I'll be home by seven at the latest. He eats at five thirty — he won't tell you he's hungry, he'll just become unreasonable, so watch for that. He'll want a story before bed. He's currently insisting on the same one every night which is —" a slight pause, "— a book about a bear who loses his hat. It's on the shelf in his room. Third from the left." "Does the bear find the hat?" Elara asked. "Yes." "Good," she said. "I prefer books where things are found." Daniel looked at her then. Briefly. The grey eyes moving to her face with that quality of attention he had — the kind that didn't announce itself but missed nothing. "He won't nap," he continued, looking back at his phone, "but by two o'clock he'll deny being tired while also being completely unable to function. If you can get him to lie down with a book he'll be asleep in ten minutes and will wake up as a different, better child." "Noted." "He's allergic to —" "Strawberries," Elara said. "And the red dye in certain fruit drinks. I looked it up." Daniel stopped. He looked at her again, and this time the look was longer — something working behind his eyes that she couldn't entirely read, something between surprise and a thing that wasn't quite surprise. "You looked it up," he said. "I told you. I'm always prepared." She set her mug down. "I also looked up his favorite dinosaur —" she glanced at the windowsill committee, "— Ankylosaurus. His least favorite vegetable is courgette, which apparently he refers to as the green betrayal —" Ruth made the sound again. Definitely not a cough. "— and he has been attending a weekly music class on Thursdays at a place called Little Notes on 84th Street, which he has mixed feelings about but attends consistently, which suggests he likes it more than he lets on." She looked at Daniel steadily. "Did I miss anything?" Daniel Cole looked at her across his kitchen table in the early morning light. "No," he said quietly. "I don't think you did." Something passed between them in the silence that followed — not quite named, not quite claimed, the kind of thing that exists in the space between two people before either of them has decided what to do with it. Damien, who had finished his toast and had the focused expression of a child transitioning to the next item on his internal agenda, climbed down from his chair and came to stand beside Elara. He put his small hand on her arm with the proprietary ease of someone who considered this entirely normal. "Can we go to the park?" he asked. "It's a little early for the park," Elara said. "What else do you like to do in the mornings?" Damien thought about this with great seriousness. "I like to show people my dinosaurs," he said. "Then let's start there," she said. Damien's face did the thing it did — the lit-up, total, unguarded thing — and he took her hand and began pulling her in the direction of the sitting room with the confidence of a four year old who has decided that the day is now officially underway. Elara let herself be pulled. At the kitchen table, Daniel watched them go. He sat with his coffee going cold in front of him and his phone face-down and the morning quiet settling back around the kitchen, and he sat with the specific stillness of a man who has just watched something happen that he doesn't have a category for yet. Ruth moved past him to collect the breakfast things. She said nothing. She had worked for the Cole family for four years and she had learned, among other things, that Daniel Cole processed things in his own time and in his own interior and that the kindest thing a person could do was let him. But when she passed the kitchen doorway and heard, from the sitting room, the sound of Damien's voice explaining the significance of the Ankylosaurus to a woman who was asking exactly the right questions — Ruth Hartley smiled to herself and said nothing at all.
