Chapter One

The sun was setting, casting an eerie glow on the path as Mira ventured into the dense forest. The elders’ warnings echoed in her mind, tales of dark forces that prowled among the trees, yet the fear of abandonment propelled her forward. She had no choice. Recently, young girls have been going missing, stolen from their beds in the middle of the night, leaving behind nothing but a small, chilling bundle of twigs as a sinister token of their fate. The villagers all mourned, but Mira refused to accept such despair, not when Isabella was the latest victim. The elders had declared the missing girls as long gone, but Mira couldn't accept their fate. Especially not when her sister, Isabella, was the latest victim. Her heart pounded with the urgency of her mission. She had to act, and she had to act now. With a deep breath, Mira summoned her courage and stepped into the unknown. Uncertain of what lay ahead in the darkness, she was resolute. For her beloved sister, she would not falter. As she advanced deeper into the murky forest, the whisper of her name floated on the wind, soft and haunting, as if the trees were calling for her. The sound sent a thrill of fear spiralling down her spine, but she couldn’t turn back now. Mira squared her shoulders, her heart thudding louder as she followed the spectral voice, each step pulling her further into the unknown. The whispers intensified, swarming around her like a relentless tempest. Were they genuinely beckoning for her, or was she slipping deeper into madness? As she headed deeper into the trees, she could almost swear that the voice was getting louder until it was right in her ear, as if the person speaking to her stood just to her left. The mystery of the voice sent shivers down her spine, adding to the moment's suspense. Spinning to the left, her eyes scanned her surroundings, but her eyes fell upon nothing but trees and a ring of wildflowers. As she allowed herself to relax slowly, the voice came again, and this time, it sounded as if they were right behind her. The voice has only just laughed, a sound that would have made her melt if it wasn't for the terror running through her veins. It was a soothing voice that sent butterflies to her stomach. Suddenly, the voice was beside her, a breath on her ear, sending chills coursing through her skin. “Lost are we, my dear?” it laughed, a melodic sound laced with mischief—sweet and treacherous all at once. "Who's there?" she cried, her voice trembling with fear. "Show yourself!" but did she want whatever it was to do so? She thought, what if it's one of them, her mind racing with terrifying possibilities—one of the faes said to live here. She had been told stories of them; the elders ensured every child in the village had. They were said to be ethereal beings of beauty to lull you into a false sense of security, only to ensnare you forever; with remarkable speed and lethal strength, everyone who had the misfortune of meeting one is never seen again—well, almost everyone. Her mother had been one of the few ever to meet one and return, but she came back different; she had become distant and would snap at one without a single notice, and then, one day, she was just gone. The elders had said she had been stolen by the fae in the middle of the night, but Mira knew better; she had seen the shadow of the fae standing outside the door to their little hut, just as she had seen her mother leave with him willingly. That thought knotted her stomach with dread as her gaze fell on a flicker of movement among the trees. Shadows twisted and turned, an intoxicating presence looming just out of sight. Mira felt an icy hand grip her heart, and she took a hesitant step back, but it was too late. His tall figure lingered just out of reach, partly shrouded by the mysterious shadows cast by the trees. A smouldering intensity radiated from his luminous violet eyes, seemingly glowing from within the darkness, pulling her in with an undeniable magnetism. The wind teased through his soft silver hair, which danced around his sharp, pointed ears as though nature had conspired to highlight his striking features, all orchestrated for this moment. Mira felt a pulse of adrenaline race through her veins, each beat matching the frantic thrum of her heart. The heat in her cheeks flared as her gaze fell upon his full, inviting lips, which curled into a smirk that hinted he knew precisely what thoughts spiralled through her mind He's breathtaking, she thought, unable to pull her eyes away even more for a moment. "Well, here I am," he chuckled, slicing through the tension and snapping Mira back to reality. He took a deliberate step closer, the air thickening with unspoken tension. "Now, what do you want with me?" His words dripped with a husky allure as his fingers reached out, brushing against a stray strand of her ebony hair, igniting sparks that coursed through her like wildfire What was she doing here? She couldn't remember; all she could think about was how his hands would feel against her skin. Then she saw a small silver bracelet, similar to the one she had back home, the one she had saved up weeks' worth of her allowance to give Isabella three years ago on their 16th birthday. Pushing the man away, she steeled her nerves and said in a calm but firm voice, "I want my sister back," she demanded, which only caused the man to c**k an eyebrow, smiling mischievously. "And what do I get in return?" he purred, moving around her with predatory grace as if assessing his next catch. She didn't know what he could possibly want or what she could give him, but she straightened her shoulders and locked eyes with him—those mesmerizing orbs in which she could lose herself completely. "What is it that you want?" she asked, lips pressed in a determined frown, daring him to lay his cards on the table. His chuckle sent shivers down her spine, an intoxicating mix of danger and thrill. He glided toward a ring of wildflowers, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the night. Extending his hand, he offered a tantalizing proposal. "You," was all he whispered, the word heavy with promise and peril before he vanished, leaving her breathless and alone with the echo of his presence
