CHAPTER 1: THE EGGS AND THE CONTRACT
---
The Seoul bus station smelled like ramen and diesel.
Ji-woo clutched her woven basket to her chest.
12 eggs. From her halmeoni’s chickens in Gangwon-do.
One of them was for Min-ho oppa.
"Ji-woo-ya, come to Seoul and propose to me," he’d said on the phone last month.
"My mom will love you if you bring eggs. City girls don’t know how to cook."
Her heart was pounding.
Today she was going to be Min-ho’s girlfriend.
Maybe even his wife.
She took the subway to Gangnam.
Big buildings. Fancy people.
She felt like a duckling in a pond of swans.
Min-ho’s apartment was a villa in a nice area.
She rang the doorbell with shaking hands.
Basket in one hand. Letter in the other.
The door opened.
But it wasn’t Min-ho.
It was a girl in a silk robe. Hair wet.
"Who are you?" the girl asked.
"I... I’m Ji-woo. I came to see Min-ho oppa."
The girl laughed. "Min-ho? He’s in the shower. With me."
Ji-woo’s basket tilted.
"What?"
"Yeah," the girl said, bored. "We’ve been dating 4 months. He said you were just his cousin from the countryside."
From inside: "Babe, who is it?"
"Nobody! Just a delivery girl!"
The door slammed.
Ji-woo stood there.
For a long time.
The egg in her basket cracked.
And so did her heart.
He lied. All those calls. "I miss you, Ji-woo-ya." All lies.
She turned and ran.
Through the streets of Seoul.
Crying.
Until she couldn’t run anymore.
That’s when the black Genesis stopped in front of her.
The window rolled down.
A man looked out.
Tall. Black suit. Cold face. Like he was carved from ice.
Hair perfect. Eyes tired.
"Are you okay?" he asked. Voice low.
Ji-woo shook her head. Tears falling.
"My... my person betrayed me."
The man frowned. "Get in."
"What?"
"You’ll catch a cold. Get in."
Ji-woo got in.
Because she had nowhere else to go.
The car smelled like leather and expensive cologne.
The man didn’t look at her.
"Where to?"
"I... I don’t have anywhere."
He finally looked at her.
Dusty sneakers. Worn jacket. Basket with cracked eggs. Red eyes.
He sighed.
"My name is Cha Do-yoon," he said. "CEO of Cha Group."
Ji-woo nodded. She didn’t know who that was.
"My grandmother gave me an ultimatum."
"What?"
"Marry in 30 days. Or I lose 51% of the company."
He turned to her.
"Marry me."
Ji-woo blinked. "Excuse me?"
"Contract marriage. 1 year. I give you money. You come to family events as my wife. After 1 year, divorce. Clean."
Ji-woo laughed. It sounded broken.
"You think I’m a gold digger?"
"I think you’re desperate," Do-yoon said. Blunt. "And I’m desperate. So we help each other."
Ji-woo looked at her cracked eggs.
She came to Seoul for love.
And got nothing.
Now a chaebol CEO was offering her marriage.
Her phone buzzed.
Halmeoni: Ji-woo-ya, did you propose to Min-ho?
Ji-woo stared at the message.
Then at Do-yoon.
"Fine," she whispered. "I’ll do it."
Do-yoon nodded once. "Good. We sign tomorrow. And Ji-woo-ssi—"
"Yes?"
"Don’t fall in love with me. I don’t believe in love."
Ji-woo almost smiled.
"Don’t worry, Cha CEO. I don’t believe in men."
But as the car drove to his penthouse, she felt it.
The start of something.
Something that would hurt or heal her.
And in her basket, another egg cracked.
