CHAPTER 4: ONE BED, TWO PEOPLE
Clause 3: Separate bedrooms.
Halmoni: Not in MY house.
---
Part 1: THE ROOM SWITCH
7:00 AM. Next morning.
Ji-woo woke up to knocking.
Hard knocking.
"Ji-woo-ya! Do-yoon-ah! Open the door!"
Halmoni.
Ji-woo opened her door in pajamas.
Do-yoon opened his in a white shirt and sweatpants. Hair messy.
Halmoni stood there with arms crossed.
"From today, you sleep in one room."
"What?" Ji-woo and Do-yoon said at the same time.
"One room," Halmoni repeated. "Married couples sleep together. This separate room thing is nonsense. I want to hear snoring from the same room!"
Do-yoon frowned. "Halmoni, that’s not—"
"No buts! Mrs. Kim is moving your things to the master bedroom. NOW."
Mrs. Kim was already dragging Ji-woo’s suitcase.
Ji-woo looked at Do-yoon. Panic.
Do-yoon looked at Ji-woo. Also panic.
But he just nodded once.
"Fine," he said. "One room."
Ji-woo’s heart dropped to her stomach.
---
Part 2: THE BIG BED PROBLEM
9:00 PM. Master Bedroom.
The bed was KING SIZE.
But it was still ONE bed.
Two pillows. One blanket.
Ji-woo sat on the very edge.
Do-yoon stood by the window.
Silence.
"Do you... want the left or right?" Ji-woo asked.
"Doesn’t matter," Do-yoon said.
He got in. On the right.
Stiff. Like a soldier.
Arms crossed. Staring at ceiling.
Ji-woo got in on the left.
Also stiff. Staring at ceiling.
There was a foot of space between them.
The Grand Canyon.
After 30 minutes.
"Are you asleep?" Ji-woo whispered.
"No," Do-yoon whispered back.
Another 30 minutes.
"Cha CEO?"
"Ne?"
"Good night."
"Good night, Ji-woo-ssi."
Neither of them slept.
---
Part 3: DO-YOON GETS SICK
2:00 AM.
Ji-woo woke up to heat.
And noise.
Do-yoon was tossing.
Mumbling.
Sweating.
"Do-yoon-ssi?" she whispered.
He didn’t answer.
She touched his forehead.
HOT.
Fever.
"Halmoni! Mrs. Kim!" she yelled.
Chaos.
Medicine. Cold towels.
Halmoni crying. "My grandson!"
The doctor came at 3 AM.
"Overwork + stress + caught in the rain yesterday. He needs rest and fluids."
Halmoni looked at Ji-woo.
"You take care of him. I’m going to pray."
So Ji-woo stayed.
All night.
Wiping his forehead.
Giving him water when he mumbled.
Changing the cold towel.
At 5 AM, Do-yoon grabbed her wrist.
In his sleep.
"Don’t leave," he mumbled. "Please don’t leave me too."
Ji-woo’s heart broke.
"Okay," she whispered. "I won’t leave."
She fell asleep in the chair next to the bed.
Holding his hand.
---
Part 4: MORNING AFTER
8:00 AM.
Do-yoon woke up.
To Ji-woo.
Asleep in a chair.
Holding his hand.
With a blanket over her that wasn’t hers.
He stared at her for a long time.
Then Halmoni burst in.
"AH! SHE STAYED ALL NIGHT! MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW!"
Ji-woo jolted awake.
"Is he okay?"
Do-yoon nodded. Voice rough. "Fever’s down. Thanks to you."
Halmoni was clapping. "See? See? This is what marriage is! Caring for each other!"
Do-yoon looked at Ji-woo.
Really looked.
Eyes soft. Not cold.
"Thank you," he said quietly.
"Don’t mention it," Ji-woo said. Then added, "Cha CEO."
Do-yoon almost smiled.
---
Part 5: MIN-HO SHOWS UP
4:00 PM. Building Lobby.
Ji-woo was going down to get air.
And there he was.
Min-ho.
With flowers.
Looking pathetic.
"Ji-woo-ya!"
Ji-woo stopped. "What are you doing here?"
"I messed up," he said. "I was stupid. That girl meant nothing. You’re the one I love. Please, let’s go back."
Ji-woo stared at him.
The boy she thought she’d marry.
Now he looked small.
"Min-ho oppa," she said quietly. "It’s too late."
"It’s not! We grew up together!"
"And you threw that away."
Footsteps behind her.
Do-yoon.
He looked pale but he was standing.
"What’s going on?" he asked. Voice low.
Min-ho saw him and got angry.
"Who are you? This is between me and Ji-woo!"
Do-yoon stepped in front of Ji-woo.
"She’s my wife," he said. Calm. Deadly. "So whatever you have to say, say it to me."
Min-ho looked between them.
Saw how close they were standing.
Saw Do-yoon’s hand almost touching Ji-woo’s back.
"Fine," Min-ho spat. "Have her. She’s just a country girl anyway."
He threw the flowers in the trash and left.
Ji-woo stood there shaking.
Do-yoon turned to her.
"You okay?"
Ji-woo nodded. Then she did something stupid.
She hugged him.
Just for 2 seconds.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Do-yoon froze.
Then slowly, he patted her back once.
"Don’t cry," he said. Rough.
---
Part 6: NIGHT 2. ONE BED.
11:00 PM.
Back in the same room.
Same big bed.
But this time was different.
Do-yoon wasn’t stiff.
Ji-woo wasn’t on the edge.
There was still space.
But less.
"Do-yoon-ssi," Ji-woo whispered.
"Ne?"
"About today... thank you. For standing in front of me."
Do-yoon was quiet for a long time.
"I don’t like seeing people hurt you," he said finally.
"Even if it’s fake?" Ji-woo asked.
"...Even if it’s fake."
Silence.
Then Ji-woo said something braver.
"I don’t hate you, Cha Do-yoon."
She heard him exhale.
"I don’t hate you either, Park Ji-woo."
Another long silence.
"Good night," Do-yoon said.
"Good night," Ji-woo said.
This time, they both slept.
