CHAPTER 6: THE EX RETURNS
Clause 5: No falling in love.
Reality: Paparazzi photos say otherwise.
---
Part 1: THE JEJU PHOTOS LEAK
8:00 AM. Seoul. Back home.
Ji-woo’s phone exploded.
100 messages.
Halmoni: AIGO MY GRANDCHILDREN!!
Mrs. Kim: Madam, please check the news.
Min-ho: You and him?
Ji-woo opened Naver.
And gasped.
HEADLINE: CHA DO-YOON’S MYSTERY WIFE REVEALED
Photos of them.
Sharing one jacket in the rain.
Hands linked.
Do-yoon looking at her like... like that.
The comments:
"Who is she? She looks so normal!"
"He’s never smiled like that in public."
"Are they really in love?"
Do-yoon walked in. Face blank.
"Did you see?" Ji-woo asked.
"Yes," he said. "PR team is handling it. Don’t read comments."
"Are you mad?"
Do-yoon looked at her. "No. Why would I be mad?"
He walked to his office.
But Ji-woo saw it.
The corner of his mouth.
Almost a smile.
---
Part 2: HALMONI CRIES
3:00 PM. Cha Mansion.
Halmoni called them immediately.
When they arrived, she was waiting with tissues.
And she started crying.
"My babies! My babies are really in love!"
Ji-woo panicked. "Halmoni, it’s not—"
"Don’t lie to Halmoni!" she sobbed. "I saw the photos! The way he looks at you! The way you look at him! This is real!"
Do-yoon sighed. "Halmoni, it’s just—"
"Just what? Just love?!"
She grabbed both their hands and put them together.
"Promise me. Promise you won’t let go."
Ji-woo looked at Do-yoon.
Do-yoon looked at Ji-woo.
"Ne," Ji-woo whispered.
"Ne," Do-yoon whispered.
Halmoni clapped and cried harder.
In the car home, no one spoke for 10 minutes.
Then Do-yoon said:
"Sorry. About Halmoni."
"It’s okay," Ji-woo said. "She’s sweet."
"She’s delusional," Do-yoon said. But he was smiling.
---
Part 3: SHE WALKS IN
7:00 PM. Cha Group Gala.
Biggest event of the year.
All of Seoul’s elite.
Ji-woo wore a navy dress. Simple. Elegant.
Do-yoon wore black.
They looked good together. Too good.
Halfway through, the room went quiet.
And she walked in.
Yoon Seo-jin.
Model. Actress.
Do-yoon’s ex-fiancée.
Red dress. Red lips.
Walking like she owned the place.
"Do-yoon-ah," she said. Voice sweet. Fake.
The whole room watched.
Do-yoon’s face went blank. Cold.
"Seo-jin."
"It’s been 3 years," she said. "You look good."
"You too," Do-yoon said. No emotion.
Then Seo-jin looked at Ji-woo.
And smiled.
"And you must be the new wife. Cute."
Ji-woo bowed. "Hello, Yoon-ssi."
"Oh, we’re being formal?" Seo-jin laughed. "Do-yoon and I are... old friends."
She put a hand on Do-yoon’s arm.
Do-yoon removed it.
"Don’t," he said. Quiet.
Seo-jin’s smile dropped for 1 second.
Then came back.
"I’ll call you later. We need to talk. About the past."
She walked away.
Ji-woo stood there.
Feeling like the country girl with eggs again.
"Are you okay?" Do-yoon asked her.
"Ne," Ji-woo lied.
---
Part 4: THE ALMOST KISS
10:00 PM. Rooftop. After the gala.
Ji-woo needed air.
So she went to the rooftop.
And Do-yoon was already there.
Drinking.
Not soju. Whiskey.
"Can I join?" Ji-woo asked.
Do-yoon nodded.
Silence.
City lights below.
"She cheated," Do-yoon said suddenly.
Ji-woo didn’t answer.
"With my best friend. On our wedding day. Took company files too. Almost ruined Cha Group."
Ji-woo’s chest hurt.
"That’s why I don’t trust people," he said. "Especially women."
Ji-woo stepped closer.
"Do-yoon-ssi. I’m not her."
"I know," he said.
"Then why do you look at me like you’re waiting for me to hurt you?"
Do-yoon turned to her.
Eyes dark. Tired.
"Because I’m scared I’ll start to like you," he whispered.
Ji-woo’s breath caught.
"Do-yoon-ssi..."
He stepped closer.
One hand came up.
Touched her cheek.
Thumb brushed her lip.
Ji-woo closed her eyes.
And leaned in.
Their lips were 1cm apart.
She could feel his breath.
Then Do-yoon pulled back.
Like he got burned.
"Sorry," he said. Rough. "I can’t. Clause 5."
He walked away.
Leaving Ji-woo alone on the rooftop.
With lips that still tingled.
---
Part 5: NIGHT. SAME ROOM.
12:00 AM.
They didn’t talk on the way home.
Didn’t talk in the room.
Got into bed.
Far apart.
Ji-woo stared at the ceiling.
Do-yoon stared at the ceiling.
"Do-yoon-ssi?" Ji-woo whispered.
"Ne?"
"About earlier... it’s okay. I understand."
Long silence.
"I don’t want to hurt you," Do-yoon said.
"You won’t," Ji-woo whispered. "Because I’m not her."
Another long silence.
Then Ji-woo felt it.
His hand.
On top of hers.
On the blanket.
Not holding.
Just... there.
"Good night," Do-yoon whispered.
"Good night," Ji-woo whispered back.
And fell asleep with his hand touching hers.
